Cross could not remember when she last conducted herself in accordance with the accepted norms without creating a headache for someone.Once she smelt the aroma of cooked food the doctor realized how hungry she was and with good reason having burned so many calories,oh well thanks to Nkosenye she did not end up ripped apart by a pack of hungry Hyenas ..after that thought she gave him her most angelic smile.

Nkosenye smiled back and winked. What followed was a few hours of eating, laughing, stories, and family. Everyone spoke Standard so that Miriam would not feel left out. At one point Nkosenye’s father looked at her and smiled warmly. As the rest of the table talked and interrupted each other and carried on, he stood and walked over to her chair and knelt down on the floor next to her so he could look at her directly. “Dear, if you even want to learn our language, I’m sure you would do well with it. Let me kow. Perhaps while you are here you and I could work on that, if you like.” and then a somewhat confused expression crossed his face. “How long are you here, by the way?”

Nkosenye, CoS

Seeing them laughing and telling stories Cross could not help but be a bit envious for she had never known what a close knit family was like.

At one point Nkosenye’s father looked at her and smiled warmly.

She smiled back at him and when he come over hearing what he had to say Cross nodded ‘’Some words, important ones cause I’m not that good at learning a new language.English is already enough for its not my native one ‘’ for a moment she thought of a word ‘’Xtahseb? (what do you think?)’‘ she asked a with sincere and genuine look .

Cross Dr.

Kagiso smiled broadly and said “You will do fine. Zulu is not always a language of words. Emotion drives much of what we express. And you seem as if you know emotions very well, dear one.” and he chuckled. “Tomorrow morning. I rise early. Meet me when you awake on the rear porch and we will begin. I am sure you will do very well indeed. You have the heart to.” and with that he rose and retook his seat.

Kagiso, Nkosenye’s Father

Cross simple gave him the thumbs up, then rested her head on Nkosenye’s arm eyes half closed. It had been a lengthy ,wearisome day .Now she was completely and utterly exhausted, their voices were getting farther and farther away as the doctor appeared to succumb into a deep sleep.

Nkosenye looked down and then motioned to his family. The laughter and voices quickly subdued. “It has been a long day for us. If you don’t mind, I am going to take her upstairs. We will see you all in the morning, I hope.” his voice rumbled out. Yibanathi stood and came around to them and said quietly “I have made up your room. I made a room for her in the spare room at the end of the hall.” and she giggled a bit. “Had I known I would have saved myself the time.” “Mother!” Mthunzi hissed, but with a smile. “Thank you. I am sure she will be just fine there.” and he stood up and, like he had on the war-ravaged planet where she hurt her ankle, he scooped her up and carried her up the stairs. The voices continued on downstairs, but it was a soft murmur carried up through the open expanse of the living room.

Nkosenye carried her into the dark room. It was a large room, with a sliding glass door that opened onto a small balcony overlooking the trees and land behind the Nkosenye home. The door stood open, and a gentle breeze carried the quiet sounds and fragrant smells of the African savanna into the room. Mthunzi laid her down on the large bed and took off her shoes. “Sleep, my love. I am the second door down from you, if you need me. Good night.” and he rose to make his way to his childhood room.

Nkosenye, CoS

About 2pm Cross bolted upright in a sitting position, she had been dreaming about the darn hyenas who got her and Nkosenye, wiping the perspiration off her forehead the doctor distorted tried to make sense of where she was. Some dim light was coming from the porch which detailed the way to the bathroom. After taking a shower the doctor found a shirt big enough that it reached below her knees.

Making her way quietly downstairs ,the doctor was hoping that the family had coffee, which thank heavens they did. With a mug in her hand she went out to the porch, hearing a howl far away in the tropical grassland ,crickets calling mates everywhere ,something flying nearby,Cross could not see the nocturnal mammals yet they were definitely there…yes she was home.

She then looked up at the clear sky, soon it would be time to board the Merrimack .For or a brief moment Cross wondered if she really had the desire and inclination in her heart to go.

Cross Dr.

There was sound from the kitchen, and a few moments later Kagiso walked out onto the porch. Taking a seat next to Cross with a cup of coffee in his hand, he looked out through the trees and smiled, his shining white teeth contracted against the jet black of his skin.

Cross heard the sound of crockery coming from the kitchen and when Mthunzi’s father came out she was not the least bit surprised. As his white teeth shone even brighter in the dark Cross’s eyes looked even more enhanced to the point of being illuminated.

Kagiso was a tall man, although not as tall as his eldest son. He was also thin where Mthunzi was broad shouldered and muscular. His hair was graying at the temples, and lines crossed his features… especially around the eyes from years of smiling and laughing. He stared out at the trees and listened to the early morning sounds in silence for a few long moments before speaking.

“You are up early, Doctor. I hope your sleep was pleasant?” he asked softly.

Kagiso, Patriarch

‘’Yes I did ,I’m the type who only need a couple of hours ‘’ the doctor then drank her coffee in silence waiting for Kagiso to do what he had promised her the night before.

Cross Dr.

Kagiso simply nodded and remained quiet for a few moments. He then said “Listen to the sounds around us, Doctor. Listen to them very closely. Remember them… because our language mirrors the cadence of the life that surrounds us. Hearing how Africa speaks will make learning to understand much easier.”
