For a brief moment the doctor closed her eyes and concentrated on the sounds ‘’Yes I remember it does remind me of home, the marshes nearby with nocturnal small mammals ,the ripple of the sea as it hit the sandy shore, the wind howling from the nearby cliffs ‘’ as Cross opened her eyes a tear slipped slowly across her cheek.

Cross Dr.

Kagiso smiled. “Good. Remember these rhythms. Keep them in your mind. Now repeat after me. Uku-phila ku-yin-jabulo.” he said, speaking the Zulu words slowly and breaking them up by syllable and listening for her to repeat the phrase.

Cross was attentive and repeated the words.

“Excellent. You have an ear for our language, dear one. That means ‘Life is joy’. Now, try this. Ikha-ya lami lila-pha zonke izin-suku zami. That means ‘My home is here for all my days.’“

Kagiso

Again the doctor said the words, then cocked her head to one side clearly in thought eventually she spoke up ‘’My dear Kagiso what are you trying to achieve by thinking I can learn your language which is completely alien to me ?’‘ she asked, paused then went on ‘’Just because I repeated the words does not mean I had any inclination to their meaning’‘ she said in a neutral tone ‘’At times words mean nothing its non verbal communication, demeanor that is facial and body expression that speak louder then words and that is what one should consider and observe ‘’.

Cross Dr.

Kagiso laughed out loud and clapped his hands together. Taking a moment, he final said “Mthunzi said you are most intelligent. He was not wrong!” and he laughed again. Finally composing himself, he reached down to the side of his chair, into a pocket of a small brown satchel that seemed to have been there since they say down. Pulling out a red leather bound book, it’s pages edged in gold, he extended it to her. Attached to the back was a data disk. “The book will show you what to say, teach you words and grammar. The disk, my dear, will teach you how to say it with the proper tones and inflections. The disk is me. And there may some little extras I included, just for you. Those you do not share with my son. They are thoughts I have for you and you alone.” and he smiled at her. “You have no idea how much joy you have brought to this old man. And though you may not have been born here, you are part of us now. Don’t ever forget that. You have more than just Mthunzi. You have all of us, little one.”

Kagiso

Miriam took the book and with tender fingers passed them over the cover, she understood how special it was and that the man had taken time just for her.The doctor could not remember being given anything …ever.

Nodding at Kagiso words,Cross fell down on her knees and wrapped her arms around his waist. She stood like that for quite some time.....for no words were needed, the gesture was enough for him to recognize her full worth of value and respect.

Cross Dr.

Kagiso wrapped his arms around her and squeezed her gently. “You need not fret anymore. You are home now. With family. And no matter how circumstances change, bet that with your role aboard your star ship or even with Mthunzi; your home is here. But I will warn you my dear…” and he pulled back to look at her, a broad grin on his face. “Mthunzi has never given his heart to anyone until you. And he is a special soul. He will not waver from you, no matter what. Loyalty like his is far too rare. And his loyalty is coupled with a stubborn streak it would take months to walk across!” and he laughed out loud and hugged her again.

Kagiso

Cross listened wide eyed ‘’I promise that I shall never hurt your son,as he has given me his heart I have also given him mine and yes this is my only home on Earth’‘ yet Cross knew that ‘Stuff’ could happen when working on a Star Fleet ship as such it was not a commodity ,unspecified circumstances that could change every thing in a blink of an eye but the doctor did not want to worry the older man.

Cross Dr.

Kagiso smiled. “Good. I am very happy to hear you speak so.” and the sound of dishes moving inside signaled someone else was up and about. “That would be your cue, my dear. If I am not mistaken, that is Mthunzi searching desperately for a monkey orange. They are one of his favorites.” and he leaned forward and chuckled. “Therefore, I took it upon myself to hide them. If you want to be his hero, they are under the side table by the couch.”
