Seeing that sickbay was fully prepared and geared up for any causalities Cross told the medical personnel to take a break, though making it clear that no one should leave the premises. ‘’Lets go to my office ‘’ the CMO told Faith and before the young woman had time to answer Cross had already took her by the arm ‘’ I have an assortment of biscuits which I bought when we were on shore leave…so lets tuck in while we have time’‘.

Cross had no intentions of sharing them with anyone but Faith.

“But aren’t ‘the circumstances dire and situation critical’ or whatever it is that the Captain likes to say whenever there is a red alert?” Faith asked.

Cross rolled her eyes ‘’Faith dear its just a few steps into my office, leaving the door open would give us ample and sufficient time to reach anyone injured, beside all medical personnel have been ordered to stay in sickbay, who am I to stop them from taking a cup of tea or coffee?’‘.

Having stocked on the real thing the female doctor asked the Captain’s niece if she wanted tea or coffee.

“Tea please,” replied Faith. “Don’t you know that about me yet?”

“And no sugar!” Faith added.

‘’I do tend to forget ‘’Cross replied as she opened a box of jam tarts and put them on the desk ‘’Help yourself…by the way is the Captain’s cat still alive?’‘ the female doctor asked hoping Glen’s niece had not forgotten all about it while on shore leave.

“Thank you. Yes, Ginger is still living,” replied Faith, “but don’t ask me where he goes.”

Faith took a strawberry jam tart from the box.

Cross put two cups on her desk ‘’Lets dig in Faith and worry about our waist another time’‘ she said laughing picking one of the jam tarts ‘’Wonder how your uncle would feel if his pet cat died’‘ the doctor commented, while forming an image in her mind of a dead cat and Glen bawling his eyes out.

Faith looked puzzled. The Captain would be upset; wasn’t that the obvious conclusion. However, Faith herself would probably be more upset. Faith fed her and changed her litter tray.

At that moment she looked at Faith ‘’The red alert is down, that was fast don’t you think?’‘ she asked more to herself then anyone else.

“That can only be a good sign,” replied Faith. “We didn’t seem to take any damage.”

For the moment Cross chewed on her jam tart ‘’Mmm.....delicious’‘ she commented forgetting about the cat, the doctor gave the Yeoman a side way glance ‘’Love, when something is too good to be true it probably is ‘’ Cross hypothesized.

“You’re not usually so suspicious or pessimistic,” said Faith. “Do you know something? What did you hear on the Bridge?”

‘’Suspicious yes, pessimistic not really ‘’Cross answered while sipping her coffee ‘’From what I saw and heard another star fleet ship was being attacked by two Orion ships and the Merri was hailed to assist.....I guess ‘’ the doctor muttered the last two words’‘Beside I only stayed for a couple of minutes just to know what to expect in sickbay ‘’.

Faith nodded in acknowledgement, and then she finally took a bite from the jam tart. It was delicious, with an extremely fruity strawberry jam filling. The light shortcrust reminded her of being a child again in the kitchens back on Eta Cassiopeia. Life had been simple there, but baking was allowed, and jam tarts were one of the few pleasures possible, other than performing music.

Faith wondered, why is Cross giving me the ‘tea and jam tart’ treatment, and why now?

‘’Say how are you doing with your nursing studies? Are you getting any practice in sickbay?’‘ Cross asked her friend ‘’Theory is obviously important but at times we find ourselves having to work with whatever minimal available resources, especially during missions’‘.

“I missed the application date for this year’s entry, so I’ll be applying for next year, but as you know, I do have some basic Triage Nurse qualifications from when I flunked out of the program. I also worked in a children’s hospital before. “.

Oh how come you missed it’‘ Cross responded totally puzzled

“The deadline was before our last little chat,” replied Faith, “and they only take them once a year.”

‘’Well what would you say if I ask you to spend some time in sickbay then?”

“If the Captain okays it?” replied Faith. “He relies on me quite a lot, but then I do need to move on one day. I need to get over feeling in debt to him for rescuing my mother and myself. We talked about that before.”

Miriam stood quiet for a moment resting against the desk and her back facing Faith ‘’Em, listen I think its about time that I should tell you that I never had an affair with the Captain or anything else remotely close..just,just to clear something that has been on my mind for quite sometime. Now that you have grown up into a young lady I do hope you understand ‘’ this was hard for the doctor for when it came to talk about such a subject believe it or not Cross was rather prudish.

‘’As a man I do like him and as Captain Glen I take pleasure in pestering him’‘ she said in a soft tone and slowly turned to gaze at his niece.

“I’m his Yeoman. I have to clear up after him. I arrange his schedule. I put out the clothes he wears. Nothing is secret from me. I realise that you were just one of the many women he took back to his room… Look Miriam, whatever you do or have done isn’t any of my business. If it were a contest, I’ve easily had more one-night stands. I was only being protective of the Captain, and I didn’t know you back then, but it is nothing to do with me. Anyway, I think the Captain has changed since he went to Paris and saw his son again. You have no idea how low he got after Andromeda left him. I was worried about his mental health, and I thought he could be taken advantage of by a clever, attractive woman. It was nothing personal. Since he returned from Paris, he seems to have settled that chapter of his life. As I say though, it’s really none of my business, and you have no need to explain your actions to me, or to anyone else for that matter. I have forgotten about it, okay? We never argued or disagreed? Let’s wipe the slate clean!”

Cross said nothing but simply went and gave Faith a hug, she would never forget that the Captain’s niece was ready to end her career in Star Fleet to care for the female doctor’s unborn child.

“I’d like to tell you something too,” said Faith. “Of all the women the Captain has invited back to his cabin, you are the most kind and lovely. I don’t know how he could have had any fondness for that Romulan, Andone.”

-Faith, Yeoman

Cross laughed ‘’Guess he’s not fond of women who are unpredictable ‘’ she responded back, about to say something else the CMO was cut short by doctor Marthese who barged in her office ‘’I’m going down to engineering ,someone has contacted sickbay for a crrewman’s uniform has turned into apples, pears and not sure bananas!’‘ she exclaimed and exited the office as fast as the female doctor had entered.

Cross jaw fell open as she looked at Faith ‘’What the hell did she say?’‘ not quite sure of what she heard ‘’This doctor lost it …she’s the one going bananas ‘’.

Cross CMO.
