One of the first results to come up for Grunch was a record of a ‘unknown crewman’ aboard the NX-01 Enterprise in 2154, which had symptoms which while not specifically labeled as ‘temporally induced’ did seem to match alot of what Captain Glen was going through though much worse for this unknown crewman. Still if things got worse for the Captain he could expect hair loss/regrowth, decay of body and mind or deaging etc etc all in which eventually would result in his death once way or another! Treatment for this unknown crew member wasnt listed. But a note by the NX-01’s Dr Phlox did indicate he had tried to use a modulated stasis field to ‘sync’ the unknown crew member’s body to lessen or correct the symptoms. Again there wasnt any clear wording of ‘temporal cause’ or the like but the implications were pretty heavily implied. Sadly as was noted it seems this effort failed as said unknown crew member was listed as having ‘died’ within a day or so of contracting said symptoms. That all said the details of how to use this modified stasis field wouldnt be too hard for Grunch to replicate to try to use on the Captain if he so decided.

Another note from the same year of 2154 was aboard the SS-Bonaventure there on a mission the crew had encountered what at the time had been dubbed an unstable wormhole. The instability of the wormhole caused the ship to become stranded to sublight speeds and due to unknown spacial effects begin to exhibit an aging process quite similar to what the Captain was undergoing. The solution to this was two fold, one eventually the ship was able to slowly get out of range of the dangerous anomaly at impulse speeds within three days. The 2nd part was a ‘treatment’ used to slow the aging process of the crew that became effected. What the CMO of the ship at the time did was use hand built stasis fields that were keyed into the ship’s warp core signature for subspace. From what he read here, this acted like an ‘anchor in time’ that while it didnt restore the effected crew members to normal did at least slow or halt the aging/deaging process from getting worse, those already effected had to deal with any problems already done until the ship got out of the range of effect. Looking at the the information this seemed a promising possible solution, one he could setup and indeed probably improve upon. Where the effected Bonaventure crew had to have bulky rerouted stations setup in their sickbay to do their jobs and stay in the ships sickbay. Grunch probably could rig up a ‘back pack’ of sorts that Glen could carry with him that did the same thing.

Grumch began to stroke his long beard as he read the results the last two involving the 1701 he threw out they were too risky and might cause the captain further problems the first two involving the NX-01 Doctor Pholx who had actually been one of the influences on Grunches decision to go into the medical field and what was developed by the Bonnaventure, however, were interesting and might be the answer he began to look into designing something combining the two solutions into one “Nurse!!!” he called from his office “Get me more scans of the captain I need to Calibrate this which hopefully will get the captain back on his feet and out of my Sickbay!” he grumbled

”..Of course sir!” The Nurse said heading off to scan the Captain.

Meanwhile, he began to gather the things he needed to make the backpack device for the Captain while waiting for the scans to calibrate the device

A few moments later the nurse returned and loaded her data chip to of the scan results.

”..Here you are sir..” She said.

Thank you Nurse” he growled in his usual manner taking a look at the scan he had to calibrate the fields so that it would snap the rest of the captain back to where they needed him to be so he was looking for the Trmoral signature that as best as Grunch could tell matched what he was just before all this started

With the up to date info in hand it was almost child’s play for Grunch to assemble the back pack and temporal ‘anchor’ and set it up to a hand held power supply. While bulky and a bit heavy it should by simulations work as planned for the Captain.

“Doctor Grunch?” said Faith, the Captain’s Yeoman and niece. “I realise that you’ve spent a great deal of time researching and creating this backpack to cure the Captain’s afflictions… and knowing how meticulous you are at your job, I’m sure that it works effectively and safely. However, I have to say that, knowing Captain John Tiberius Glen as well as I do, that you are never going to get the Captain to wear that monstrous contraption. It will look so uncool! Where do you think that a shopping-obsessed fashionista, like myself, gets it all from? Glen won’t wear a shirt that hasn’t been first ripped by an angry clawed alien! He is so cool that he got suspended from primary school for wearing shorts and wedged sneakers! I suggest that you write up a paper to submit for the Carrington Award, but that you hide the actual item away and tell him that you failed.”

“Luckily Yeoman I happen to outrank him in Medical Matters and as such I can order him to wear this and I will Glue it permanently to his back If I have to!” he growled bringing it out and helping the captain up to put it on him

Grunch took Faith through Sickbay to the Captain’s bed and command post. They would find Captain John Glen, surrounded by his communications and surveillance equipment.

“So, this is it?” Glen asked when he saw the contraption. “This is the rucksack that will allow me to finally leave Sickbay and get back to the Bridge again?”

After trying it on, Glen pondered on it for a while. “I agree with Faith… Not about the fashion statement, but it is a little on the large side! I was thinking that I could return to normal duties once again, but I’ll have trouble getting through that door wearing this. How does it work? Can I still use the transporter? Will it affect any equipment?”

Whether Glen could use the transporter wasn’t known, as for other equipment it shouldn’t effect anything.

“Not sure captain sorry” he said simply

Glen suddenly realised that he was being very mean spirited. After all the time and effort Grunch had put into this, he should be a bit more upbeat and supportive, and less negative. Although, maybe there was something in Grunch’s attitude that just made everyone else around him cheerless and dispirited.

“Sorry! I mean this is fantastic really,” added Glen. “Faith is right, you should be nominated for the Carrington Award for this.” (Even private conversations could be listened into with the set-up Hal had provided in Sickbay for the Captain.)

“Just one thing,” said Glen. “It’s a little heavy, but if you added an anti-grav belt to it, then I’ll wear it gladly.”

“Stop Complaining No pain no gain Suffering is good for the soul and all that” he growled

“Right then! I think I had best go and try this out!” said Glen. “It seems like I’ve been cooped up here in Sickbay for weeks and weeks. I haven’t seen another soul since Hal came to visit me. I think I’ll visit the Bridge and see if it is still there!”
