Main Sim - The Alien Ship Bridge

“Let me see,” Glen continued, “History was never my best subject… Once the Vulcans had made first contact with Earth, the rival fragmented governments on Earth came together. Vulcan had its own political schisms too, but over time the idea of a coalition of planets to explore the galaxy together grew in popularity. Earth, Vulcan, Andoria, and Tellar were the four founding members, and a charter was drawn up to form the basis of a multi-species alliance. It has steadily expanded ever since, although we hold an uneasy peace with the other large empires at our borders. The Federation is governed by democracy and has an elected President. I’m sorry, but my knowledge more than that is sketchy, I’m just a pilot really, rather than a diplomat.”

Hal said, “Maybe we could download a copy of our Federation Charter, with the signatory planets on it?”

“Let’s get that organised,” Glen replied.

“Could I ask you now about your ship?” Glen asked. “As I mentioned earlier, we use the ability to break the speed of light, or Warp Speed as we call it, as a measure that a species has reached a sufficient technological level that it could join the Federation. It is rather taken for granted that that also implies it has a societal structure that can manage first contact with extra-solar aliens. So, your engines are a truly fantastic achievement. Almost all Warp engines rely on matter-antimatter reactions at their core, and the energy produced is controlled by the use of Dilithium crystals. Do you use Dilithium crystals? As you might expect, Dilithium has become something of great value and a new source of the mineral would bring great economic good fortune to your systems if you were to exploit it.”

=/\= I do not know what this Dilthium you speak of is. The crystal we use is lithium based fed by a phased plasma matter and antimatter matrix =/\= The First replied.

“I see,” Glen replied, “Same principle, I guess, but different crystal structure, Well, that might be useful if our Dilithium ever ran out, or stopped working.”

=/\= What else did you want to know? =/\= She inquired.

“We are curious about everything,” replied Glen. “Why don’t you ask us some questions instead? I’ve noticed that you find our diversity interesting. You are all very similar, almost identical, but as you’ve noticed, we are many different species, different skin pigmentations, different sizes and heights, and we come in two different sexes.”

After a moment the First replied =/\= In truth, Captain Glen. I am unsure what to ask! I am still coming to grips with the idea that we will not perish alone and forgotten out here in the void of space. As it might seem that is what happened to our cryo sleeper exploration ships years before. I am also trying to comprehend the scope of your Federation. It boggles my mind truly that so many races, even ones with more then one sex could cooperate on the scale you had painted for me. The sheer diversity you mentioned is alien to me almost. While our species works in harmony for the betterment of all of us, and while we have suspected for some years that life beyond our own existed, I truly was not prepared for it to happen so soon. Yet you take this in stride like it is a commonality for you! How do you cope?=/\= She asked.

“Man discovered long ago that diversity gives you access to a greater range of talent, not just the talent that belongs to a particular world-view or ethnicity or some other restricting definition. It didn’t come easily or quickly though, we fought many wars on old Earth because of the fear of the ‘other’. When we finally made it into space, we already had that ethos to carry forward. The first race that introduced themselves, the Vulcans, have a philosophy based upon Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations and upon Logic. Their idea of IDIC celebrates the vast array of variables in the universe, and so it was a good fit when it came to writing the Federation charter. It doesn’t make it any easier in practise. Quite recently, we made a peace with the Klingons, a warrior society with a long history of conflicts aginst us. However, a cabal formed of disaffected officers from the Federation Starfleet, the Klingon Empire, and the Romulan Star Empire, attempted to undermine those peace talks. They failed, but despite our better nature, it seems xenophobia lives on. We are not perfect beings.”
