Looking into the view screen William would find themselves in orbit safe and sound, not much else for the moment to do but wait out the meeting to come.
William crossed his legs and got comfortable, this was what he disliked about having the Conn, there was little to actually physically do. On his station, he could run diagnostics and look at sensor readouts for hours on end without getting bored and that was when they had nothing to do, he still hadn’t figured out what one does in the center chair to pass the times between the occasional reports.
William had one of the crewmen bring him a cup of tea as he listened in on the away team. It seems they had a transporter malfunction. His first thought was that he was glad not to have used that infernal device to transport down with them.
Dariusz Pokorski locked them into a stable orbit, he looked up from Navigation to the empty seat at the console next to him at the Helm. “I guess Cadet Lucas Coleman won’t be coming back, Sir! It’s a good job that I didn’t have anywhere to go.”
William looked at the navigator, for a moment he considered admonishing the young crewman “Let’s make sure that the transporters are fully functioning for when the away team returns. We can’t have mistakes like this especially during first contact with a new species”.
“Aye, Sir!” replied Pokorski, “I’ll tell the Transporter Chief. Chief BJ Hunnicutt is new to the Merrimack. It will be traumatic for him . I’ll check that he’s getting the
confidential counselling service that Dr Cross organised before she left us, and that the chain of care is also being applied to other staff involved.”Over by the science station the unmanned console beeped twice demanding attention from something on scans.
William spun the chair around. Usually, he would ignore random beeps but his ear was trained for that specific console’s sounds. He stood up and looked at the scans.

Seeing the CSO move like lightening, Dariusz said, “What is it Sir? Can I be of assistance?”
