“Respect to you and yours.” he began, “My skin coloration was normal for my entire race. While I am white right and black left, others were black right and white left. Male, female, androgen, was not a factor in our bilaterally symmetrical coloration.”

After the reply all three nodded, clearly in awe but quickly obviously adapting to the new information they were being graced with. The unnamed female member then spoke, =/\= Captain I am sure you or your officers have questions for us, please indulge yourselves, and we will answer as openly and honestly as you have for us so far. =/\= She said. This would probably be a good time to admit their UT had not locked onto the woman’s name and give it a chance to try again.

It appeared to Glen that in that question, the Alstaireans were deliberately highlighting the issue of single genders, and by asking them to indulge themselves with further questions, they were urging them to ask this burning question. However, as Glen had said to Kord earlier, he thought they should paper over the lack of any Alstairean males for the time being. Not that it wasn’t significant, but while it was undoubtedly curious, he had doubts that it was going to be important to future Alstairean-Federation relations. In any case, if the reason really was so important, then it would all come out in the wash. For the immediate present he didn’t want to ask anything that might rock the boat, so he didn’t really want a free for all question and answer session. If it was vital to the Alstaireans themselves then they would tell them about it in their own time. Maybe Glen was far too influenced by the previous First Contact mission fiasco, but he really wanted this one to be a success.

The Universal Translators continued to have some problems with odd words and names though, and Glen was happy for Inola to ask for some clarification on that. A better understanding of their language might lead to a better understanding of their society and that society’s structure, and so also answer this question of missing genders.

For instance, if the female Tri-Council member’s name were to translate as “Man-Conqueror” or “Gynocentric-Warrior” that would be a give-away.

=/\=Thank you, er… Our Universal Translator machine has been having some slight problems with unfamiliar terms and names, =/\= Glen told the Tri-Council unnamed female. =/\=Please could you repeat your name again? =/\=

=/\= Of course Captain, my name is Falee =/\= She said this time to the UT getting it right.

Tia listened from the back of their group. She was more suited to the engineering sections and crawl spaces than Council chambers and First Contact discussions. As the questions of Kord’s coloring came up, she stiffened a moment. It wasn’t overt or highly visible and she quickly forced herself to relax. Being the last of his kind, she wondered many times if discussing his race was a hard thing for him to do. As he answered with all the dignity and professionalism she would expect him to uphold, she also couldn’t help wonder at the pain that was possibly under the surface as she wondered how long before someone recognized his past tense reference to his kind.

When the option came to ask questions, she couldn’t think of any that weren’t directly in line with the status of the ship they had accompanied back. She was no diplomat and knew nothing she was apt to query about would be of any consequence to anyone else.

  • Glen, CO

“I see your governing body is a trinary body. Is there a significance? Religious, caste, something else?” Kord asked.

  • Kord, XO

=/\= We are representatives of the three major tribes on our planet, Commander Kord. We are then each given advice by our advising council when needed =/\= Falee explained.

Inola nodded, remembering the information she had received from the Third on the ship.
