Since yesterday when Joe had only had time to check in with his new captain and had his adventure in sickbay, he had finally gotten to his cabin late and got some sleep. Now with a different day Joe had put on a fresh uniform, shaved and generally cleaned himself up to look a bit better than he had yesterday when he came in.

This morning Joe had been out walking the Merrimack doing what he liked to do best. He had been out wandering the ship aimlessly, stopping people, introducing himself, asking people about themselves and telling jokes which only brought a laugh with a one out of five average. He spoke to everyone from department heads to crewmen. The security department held him longer than anyplace. Joe himself had started out as a security officer. So, a lot of time was spent with everyone telling old stories and of course jokes.

Soon he found the time to be afternoon and his stomach to be empty. This caused him to abandon his current spot on the observation deck and move down to the galley. Once there he frowned at the replicator as if he were trying to communicate with it. Finally giving up on this endeavor he decided to roll the dice. “Coffee, black two sugars. “He began as he spoke to the replicator. “Reuben sandwich, toasted rye bread, warm Pastrami, Swiss cheese melted over the top and with sauerkraut on top. Thousand Island dressing on the bread with two dill pickle slices on the side.”

Joe immediately questioned his sanity as soon as the replicator started to make his lunch. The replicator started, stopped, started again, groaned and made a Ker-chunk noise before starting again. Joe wondered if perhaps he had broken the thing by giving too much detail. To his amazement however he received a good Reuben. His coffee was hot. And well, his pickles seemed a bit limp and watery. But a good lunch, nonetheless. He looked around and saw that he was alone in the galley. “Maybe I missed the lunch crowd. “He mumbled before attacking his sandwich.

Some one did came in and it was Hunter heading towards the replicator ,with a plate full of sandwiches and some coffee he was seen looking around.
As his eyes fell on the Cmdr the doctor gave a quick nod and kept on looking as if trying to find someone ,he sighed and eventually sat down Maybe she already had her lunch Hunter thought to himself ,a clear worried look on his face.

Joe had just finished a big bite of his Reuben before picking up one of the dill slices. He bit off the end making a loud crunching sound as he did. It was then that he noticed movement out of his peripheral vision. Turning he saw Hunter walking into the galley. A smile crossed his face then as he continued to chew the piece of dill pickle. He just couldn’t ignore the coincidence. As soon as he had bitten into something sour Hunter showed up!
back to him
He saw Hunter give him a nod and he merely nodded back to him and continued with another bite of pickle. Taking a sip of his coffee Joe suddenly found himself suddenly very curious about Hunter. He picked up his coffee and the rest of the pickle he was eating on and then crossed to where Hunter sat. He sat down across from then and smiled at him momentarily before saying. “Lieutenant. You look as though something is bothering you. Is there anything I could help you with?”

Lt. Cmdr. Joe Milligan XO

Hunter looked up surprised ,a piece of sandwich dangling from his mouth which he quickly swallowed.

‘’Actually I was looking for Cross hoping to find her here, I sincerely hope she had some lunch’ the doctor checked again but Cross was not there in fact she never bothered to have lunch ‘’I’m worried, she is anorexic and I have no clue if she has a problem with food or not.I had checked her file when she left four yrs ago and her weight was normal back then ‘’he was reluctant to speak in detail about her physical evaluation for he was bound by confidentiality.

Joe smiled across the table at Hunter. Despite the first thought that danced around his mind screaming *Aren’t you a doctor? * Followed closely by the urge to have a minimum of one hand around Hunter’s neck, Joe just smiled and took another bite of pickle. After, Joe took a sip wasting time by slowly chewing and swallowing the final small piece of pickle, Joe took a sip of coffee before speaking to Hunter. “Well then, ” Joe began in a soft smooth voice. “A couple of questions I have for you then. This anorexia. Have you given her an exam which would indicate one way or another that she is indeed suffering from anorexia? And if you did, why did you not follow up enough to determine what the cause might be? ” Joe took a sip of coffee and placing his mug back down he said now in a not so friendly tone. “I am hoping of course that you have done an exam. Because Anorexia is a serious ailment. If it is caused by mental issues, it can be worse than if she has trouble with foods for whatever reason. If it were to be a mental disorder the CO would have to be informed for the simple reason that he would have a department head trying to do damage to herself. And of course, if you were going around just telling people that she was anorexic without having done a complete physical you could just be firing torpedoes at the Lieutenants career for some reason of your own. So, have you conducted a complete physical to determine this or not?”

Lt.Cmdr. Joe Milligan XO

Hunter had had enough he got up, his arms resting apart on the table trying to fight the urge to throw the table at the opposite side of the wall ‘’Are you now questioning my competence as a doctor, how dare you ‘’ slamming one fist on the table he went on ‘’Thanks to you mister know all, I now have to relay on Cross to ask another doctor to check her blood samples and determine what vital vitamins she needs ,I was suppose to leave a hypospray on her desk to inject herself with every day but now I cannot work in sickbay due to your interference about a crew member with a broken nose’‘.

The male doctor got nearer to Joe, his face just inches from his ‘’ Do you think I got out of Star Fleet academy yesterday ? Are you questioning how I conduct a medical evaluation? I was suppose to see her every two weeks to know if she is putting on weight or not and just so you know try asking or ordering Cross to co-operate.you’ll be in .......’‘ he stopped for Hunter was in no position to give away what was suppose to be classified material .

‘’This has to be taken to the Captain’s table Cmdr ‘’ Hunter started to walk away but stopped for a brief moment ‘’What is it Cmdr full of testosterone’‘.
Hunter Dr.

As Joe watched the doctor lose his temper Joe simply smiled back in the man’s face as he drew near. Finally, the man would show what he was made of if anything and Joe could come to a conclusion about him. Joe had started this because of his concern for Lieutenant Cross. Her health and her career could be on the line. So, Joe had asked a simple question. Had Hunter done a complete physical to determine the cause of her problem, or was he merely going around gossiping about something he merely suspected?

In the short time he had talked with Lieutenant Cross, he had found her to be a nice person. She in fact reminded him of someone from his youth. Joe was also one of those Commanders who thinks of those working for him the same way he would think of his family members. He was very protective of them. Whether it be from marauding Klingons or from inept doctors Joe worried about his crew and sought to protect them from harm with an attitude like that of a Mother Bear.

Hunter’s fit was that of an intelligent man walking right into a finely set trap. For in doing so he had not answered the question for one thing. Which told Joe that in all likelihood the man hadn’t conducted a complete physical. And from the complete lack of respect with which he continued to show toward his senior officers Joe could only conclude that while the man was smart, he certainly lacked any common sense. He was one of those people who thought that he was above and better than those around him. And this only led Joe to wonder what a man like him was doing in start fleet. Joe’s smile widened. He would bet a month’s pay on the fact that Hunter had more than a couple of skeletons in a closet somewhere. Doctors like him as a rule owned a large clinic somewhere catering to the small aches and pains of the very wealthy.

After Hunter had finished his childish outburst, Joe took a last sip of his coffee and turned addressing Hunter’s backside as he spoke in a low, firm and determined voice. “Yes, Lieutenant I agree. I have up until now not questioned your ability. I have however questioned your resolve to carry out your duties. I have tried twice now to resolve simple issues and end them with a simple and acceptable conclusion with you. Twice I have failed. You are NOT a team player doctor. You don’t seem to recognize that you’re stuck on a starship with no one else but your crew and command staff to depend on in case of some emergency. So yes, take this to the captain. You can do that, or you can sit down and answer my questions. You will find I am not that hard to please. If you are as concerned about Cross as you say. That would be your clear course. I myself wish that would. For I would love to have you prove me wrong in my evaluation of you.”
