Cross was already on the bar stool drowning her third vodka ,the dentist said he’ll meet her there, whether he was coming or not the female doctor didn’t really care for she needed to unwind and release some of the tension of the past few days.

Looking around Cross did not see anyone she knew ,maybe recognized a face here and there from sickbay but no one stood out for her to feel relaxed enough to join.

Joe had finished getting himself a shot of Irish whiskey and a beer. He sat on the bar stool and looked over at Cross with a crooked smile and said,” they say you shouldn’t do it. It’s a scientific fact recently proven by the institute of imbibology that in any given group of people drinking that at least one will forget how to get home. Therefore, never drink alone. You may forget your way home and need help.” Joe laughed for a second before taking a drink. “So how are things going with that young boy? Are we going to keep him in stasis or wake him up at some point?”

Cross took moment before answering ‘’The Captain’s order was to wake the child up in the hope that he’ll be able to give us some information of where he came from and about the Spheres, though I have to admit I’m not so enthusiasm about it ‘’ Cross went on to say ‘’I would have much preferred to get him at his star constellation, since we know next to nothing about how he came to be in the pod when there was no technology to keep him in stasis back then’‘.

Joe had gotten off duty, spent forty-five minutes hammering away at the large punching bag in his cabin, cleaned himself up dressed in a clean uniform and went for a stroll around the ship. By Joe’s reckoning he should know everyone on board within a few days at this pace. Despite the bad reputation which often preceded him he was at his core a people person. He loved to be around people.

The Fantail Lounge was a place he hadn’t been yet, so he made it a point to go there now. Hard telling who one might meet! Walking into the lounge Joe looked to one side and saw nothing but emptiness. Standing there five steps into the door he turned to go when he spotted someone at the bar. That someone was Miri. For some reason Joe just froze where he was. He felt for all the world like a big buck deer who has stepped out of the woods and into a clearing only to be spotted by a potential predator. Flee, stand still and hope that he blended in or charge at the predator.

Cross might have seen him before he did Well, well she thought if it ain’t the devil himself* as every atom of her body tensed. The doctor looked at him with a concentrated stare and saw someone with the pose of defiance.Maybe she was wrong after all she had changed too,the scar across her cheek was a testament to what she might have endured in the past four or so years.

Joe didn’t care much for this feeling. His body was a testament to the fact that he had very seldom backed away from anything or tried to hide in plain sight. He had all the knitted bones and more than a fair share of scars to prove his valor and in many cases lack of judgement. But what he felt now seeing Miri after their last encounter. Well, it was a strange sensation. Joe frowned and balled his fists up as he became angry at himself. He turned then and began walking toward the bar. Looking in Cross’s direction he smiled charmingly and said, “You know what they say about drinking alone don’t you Miri? You still drink that vodka, do you?”.

Cross gave him a small nod and addressed him as ‘’Cmdr’,looking at her glass the female doctor saw that it was nearly empty ‘’So you still remember’‘ she replied with a deceptive look of fragility.

:”You know what they say about drinking alone don’t you Miri?’‘
Cross shook her head her locks bouncing up and down as always ‘’No Cmdr what do they say?’‘.

At Joe’s answer Cross could not but laugh, after all with her fixed broken tooth she was not so self-conscious ‘’Actually the darn dentist was suppose to join me ‘’ the doctor looked around but he was nowhere to be seen ‘’Guess he forgot, not that it matters ‘’.

Cross was doing a quick calculation of how much credit she had, which wasn’t much ,after all she boarded the ship with nothing but the clothes she had been wearing.
‘’I usually drink when my shift starts in the afternoon ,the last thing I want is to report to sickbay with a hangover Joe ‘’ the name slipped ‘’Em Cmdr’‘.

She slid her empty glass across the bar to the barman ‘’Fill it up love’‘ then turned to the Joe ‘’And a drink for the Cmdr?’‘.
She remembered his medical evaluation which showed healed bones ‘’Say Cmdr what have you been up too when you left?’‘.

Though Joe tried desperately, it warmed his heart when she called him Joe. He smiled despite himself. Since they had talked, he had lectured himself saying that after the hurt she had been through nothing would ever grow between them again and he should never try to ignite an old flame which might only cause pain to them both. But still, it didn’t mean they couldn’t be friendly right? He nodded yes to her question of the drink be he began to answer her.

“Let me see I was assigned to Command security for a while.” he said pausing for a drink before continuing. “Then was Chief of Security on an ore cracking station. I had fun there with a group of Andorrans.” he gave a short laugh before saying, “If anyone asks you how many it takes to make a formidable fighting force the answer is five by the way. I served then as security chief on a little ship called the Lyra. Then as an advisor on a new colony. Back to Earth then to an anti-matter purification and storage station of all places. Various and sundry troubles in between and finally landed in the brig on Earth. And they finally thought to rid themselves of a pain by sending me here.” He smiled wanly wanting to tell her that he had tried to get in touch with her. Had looked at his first opportunity but that evidently it had been too late. Instead he kept silent. He turned finally and asked her, “And you? You like the Merrimack?”

Cross took a moment to wrap all that he said ‘’I’m amazed you’re still in one piece !’‘ she exclaimed with a hint of humor in her tone of voice ‘’At least it kept you busy, not to dwell on the past’‘ those words came out from another part of her brain one which she usually kept silent Darn and hoped Joe wasn’t paying much attention to what the doctor just said.

‘’As for myself ,once I disembarked from the ship packed what I thought I’ll need and left.I felt the need to truly find who I was, what I really wanted and did that by leaving everything behind me that is living alone, secluded , to enjoy one’s solitude and more important the remoteness from habitations, absence of human activity and into the wilderness ‘’.

At this point Cross turned around facing the Lounge ,her elbows resting on the bar and one foot against it ‘’How many nights I laid on my back looking at the night sky when I finally realized here on this ship is were I can truly call home’‘ .
Cross Dr.

Joe listened to what Miri had to say. Every word, every syllable, every nuance. He maintained his straight face through her jab about not dwelling on the past. He would listen. It was what she seemed to need. Well, that or the dentist he thought. He would fill in for the dentist, and maybe send her to her quarters feeling a bit better.

Joe took a sip of his drink as she started to catch him up on what she had been up to since last, they had been together. His mind drifted a bit as he listened. His heart was wrenched as he listened to her. About loneliness. Joe had never gotten used to loneliness. About the only thing he had gotten used to was accepting himself for who he was. And he had certainly not felt at home anywhere yet.

As she finished speaking Joe tossed back the rest of his drink and set the empty glass on the bar. “It’s good that you found somewhere you feel at home, Miri. Never did that myself but I hear it’s a good thing. He turned, looking across the lounge as he leaned back against the bar. He finally spoke in a near whisper. “No matter how busy I was or how unconscious I was for whatever reason forgetting the past never seemed to happen.” He forced a smile then as he reached over to pat Miri’s hand and said, “But I’m pleased as punch that you’ve found somewhere you can call home. Just watch out. Take care of yourself, ok?”
