Bre had packed everything she could think of which actually didn’t amount to much. In a few hours she would be leaving on a long trip to Vulcan. Anna would be coming along later after tending to some personal matters so Bre and the twins would be travelling alone.

She sat in the lounge, with the drowsy babies, looking out the window, torn between wanting to go home to Earth and the exhilaration of her new post.

The Security Chief walked into the Lounge carrying a small red and black wood box and looked around. Seeing Bre, he walked directly to her. Speaking softly so as not to disturb the twins, his deep rumbling voice sounded more like far distant thunder than the typical crashing boulders. “Hello, Lieutenant. Am I interrupting? I wished to speak with you for a moment, if that is all right.”

Nkosenye, CoS

Bre smiled up at Nkosenye, nodded, then motioned for him to sit down. She wished she’d had a chance to get to know this one a bit better.

“Don’t worry, they’re out like little lights.”

Cross walked in a few seconds after Nkosenye ‘’Please Lt’‘ she told the CoS ‘’Just a couple of minuets that’s all I’m asking for’‘ her eyes were already welled up with tears that threaten to fall the second she blinked.
‘’Bre I’m going to miss you, having been friends for so long’‘ a tear rolled down her face which the doctor was quick to wipe out.Cross hugged her and it seemed she did not want to let go ‘’Take care and hope one day we’ll meet again’‘ she then kissed both babies on their heads ‘’Take good care of them for nothing is as precious as your children’‘.
Cross took a few steps backwards ready to turn around and leave.

Cross Dr.

Bre returned Cross’ hug.

“Oh don’t worry, you haven’t seen the last of me. The new position I’m taking makes allowances for the fact that I enjoy field study. I can’t say that Glen and Emmy will be with me every time but we’ll see.” Bre explained.

There was a shadow of relief on Cross’s face while giving her friend a thumbs up. As she had promised Nkosenye ‘’Just a few seconds ‘’ the female doctor left without saying another word.

Cross Dr.

William entered the lounge, he didn’t really know Bre, didn’t get to know her during his first tour on the Merri nor now during his short tenure there. But tradition dictated that the mother should be given a gift. Both as a leaving Officer and as a fresh mother of two. He wore a single collarless black shirt with dark pants and was holding two bags and a small engraved box. He gave doctor Cross a friendly smile as she walked past and waited patiently behind the hulking security guard calmly. Standing in his as per usual in his very straight manner.

CSO

Nkosenye watched Cross leave and saw the CSO enter. He nodded and then turned to Bre. He handed the box to her and said “A small gift for you, and two for the little ones.”

Inside the box were three items, carved from a dark, almost black, wood and polished to a high shine. Two of the carvings were identical: wooden replicas of the Merrimack with the twins’ birth date carved into the hull. The detail was startling, and each had it’s own stand for displaying it. “I know they won’t know what that is now, but when they are older they may appreciate a token of their birth place.”

The last item was small piece of the same wood, carved into the symbol of Starfleet and hung as a pendant on a beaded necklace. Instead of being polished as much as the ships, this was wrapped in some kind of wire; only parts of the wood showed through. “The wiring is from the communications panel on the bridge. I asked for some when Engineering was repairing it.”

Nkosenye, CoS

Bre was truly touched. Setting the box aside she hugged the large man and spoke softly in perfect Zulu.

“They will know this ship, they will know this family, and we will never forget you. Keep them safe for me.” she said before stepping back and wiping the tear from her eye. Carefully she slipped the necklace on not to be taken off for decades.

Nkosenye didn’t speak but he returned the hug, his huge black arms pulling Bre close for a moment. He released her and simply nodded, then turned and walked out of the Lounge. As he went through the door, a single tear formed and was quickly wiped away.

Nkosenye, CoS

Bre was wiping her eyes when she noticed William again.

“Don’t mind me, I’m just a big mush. How are you doing today William?” she asked as she tucked Nkosenye’s gifts away.

  • Bre

William smiled at Bre “Oh I’m fine lass” He moved slightly closer “I leave for a few years and you go popping out a couple’a wee ones” He handed her the bags “I dinnae have their measurements but I’m a fast knitter” In each bag was two pairs of knitted booties and gloves and a single hat”Me mam would kick me across the system if I didn’t give the little ones something” He then handed her the small box he held “And a fare ye well, of course, the kids in the labs whipped this up for ye.” Inside was a small device, rectangular in shape “They wanted tah make a special translator device, it has the Federation Language Database in it, it’s fer taking notes as well. It also might sing lullabies or tell stories I’m not entirely certain if I imagined that. It also tells humorous logic puzzles for yer new Vulcan friends.” He shrugged slightly “They all wanted tah pitch in.”

Will Grey - CSO

Bre looked at the items in due course marveling over the soft tiny stitches and pondering all the uses she would get out of the gift from the science department.

“That’s really amazing. Thank you so much. It looks like I’m going to be speaking a lot of Vulcan where I’m going. Hopefully I’ll be back someday. I don’t want to loose the edge that field experience gives me you know.” Bre explained as she tucked the items away.
