A beep was heard within the news studio and an audio driven male voice likely some local caller on the habitat spoke, =/\= Uh good evening! Thanks for taking my call. I am Gal Free 2nd lead engineer among one of our Habitat’s hydro-electric generation divisions and waste reclamation facilities. If you could indulge me and my fellow workers we are curious how your ships and Federation handle hydro reclamation and waste management? As well as how these points of power generation and waste management are handled through your Federation? =/\= he asked.

Joe looked around for Tia so that she might field this one. It was certainly nothing he wished to address. Making one think of things like this made a person want to carry your own crated supplies on board a starship.

George stepped up to answer this one, having spent some considerable time working in waste reclamation, “Whell, we have this here mowleculaar synthesizuurr device that there uses matter-energy conversion technology ta create food ayn’ some objects, but witch also wawks on waste ta produce feedstock too. There are some heavy metals ayn’ some fowevuurr chemicals remaining aftuurrwarrds, but they get recycled too being as they are rare elements and mowlecules.”

Joe grimaced at how close George may have come to giving away some hints to their technology. But you couldn’t put the words back and how much can leftovers advance a society anyway? At the end of the day there wasn’t much could be done differently to recycle things that most people didn’t want to know about anyway.” Ah there we are! That was our expert George. ” Turning then to George, Joe said cheerily, “Thank you George, when it comes to waste no one does it better than you!”

Waste Reclamation isn’t the most popular position on a Starship, but someone has to do it, George thought.

Then despite his overwhelming urge to get to his quarters, get a shot of whiskey and good meal Joe kept on as he turned toward the viewer and spoke saying, “Well that was a great question. We have anymore?”

Another pause then the news lady spoke, =/\= Ah yes seems we have a call in from one of our Sybl friends listening in.=/\= She said.

A second later a hyper active sounding female voice spoke, =/\= Yes yes! I am Lu from the Sybl merchant ship near you! I help run our trade and appraisal systems for current and new clients for our records. How does your Federation handle trade and coinage or credit systems?=/\= She said.

George had noted the grimace from Joe when he had answered the last question, and so he was happy to remain silent for Joe to take this one.

Joe nodded as the lady asked her question. He took a deep breath plunged ahead. “Well, that’s one of those questions that to outsiders may sound confusing. Believe me, many people in the federation still find it confusing sometimes. Our system works thusly. We have done away with any monetary system. We work on a system whereby the people focus on doing what is best for themselves and the federation. “

Pausing then to gather his thoughts Joe continued saying,” “For instance my rank. I’m qualified to do this rank and in return I am compensated with the appropriate housing, food and clothing. As a person I know that in my rank I am comfortable and happy in my job, and I am happy with my compensations. I know too that while I could get a bigger cabin if I were captain, I would probably be a poor captain, my mental health might suffer from the stress, and I would not be useful to the federation. All this being said there is a system of money based on how items are valued. This is the credit. These can be gained from someone doing extra work for a short time. Then having extra credits, they might spend them for something extra that the don’t really need. The credit is also traded to non-federation people as regular money. Many times, one of the oldest forms of trade are used, however. That being a simple barter system.”

=/\= Interesting! Interesting! Few are the customers we have met in space flight who have developed well or lasted very long with doing away with such concepts without major impacts on their societies or their freedoms. Thank you though for the time and answer!=/\= Lu said ending her call.

George thought that was a good answer if one didn’t want to give away hints to Federation technology. There was little need for a concept of money when a modern industrial replicator could make most objects with the correct atoms for feedstock and enough power, but then one would need to explain both a replicator and how they generated enough power. However, they still couldn’t make everything. For instance, they still needed Dilithium crystals. Maybe the Sybyl trade delegation knew a supplier? George thought.

Dol across the line then spoke, =/\= If I may comment here, I too find their system a little strange as they note. But if our listeners may consider for those of us who have lived on our habitat here for generations it is not so different then our own. From what I have been told their length and breadth of their education system and influences are just more complex and further then our own. =/\= Dol said.

Getting nods from his wife Sol the news caster was about to continue, when.....

Cross contacted Joe =/\= Cmdr, please ask them for the vaccine they had developed when years ago a trade ship infected the people of the Habitat with a virus, please Commander its important both to the medical and science dept =/\= the doctor pleaded.

Cross CMO.

Joe grimaced inside. He thought he was nearly finished and might get out of this now. He cleared his throat then and spoke at the screen. Excuse me a moment. I hate to get off subject, but our chief medical officer is asking for a favor from stationmaster Dole. Our doctor was telling her about a plague that your people suffered some time back and had mentioned a vaccine. Our medical officer was wondering if she might have a sample of it before we left. “

Lt.Cmdr. Joe Milligan XO

=/\= Ah yes, thank you for the reminder, Lieutenant Commander Milligan.=/\= Dol said, =/\= We actually have that information on stand by to transmit to you I was going to wait till the end of this interview, but this is fine to do now as well..=/\= he said nodding to someone off screen.

A second later there was a beep at the communication station. “..We have received the data script from the Dol successfully Commander..” she said.

The news caster then smiled, nodding to something probably from her ear piece, =/\= Ah it seems we have a few more callers interested in questions! =/\= She said

OOC: Going to time skip ahead an hour or so! Feel free to fill in any specific stuff someone wants to share otherwise by its end I’ll wrap this up!

It was an hour later, when finally the interview seemed to be drawing to a close. In that time the XO and others on the bridge had gone through a variety of Q/As from both Dol’s habitat people and the Sybl. In return the Dol had informed them that Tia’s request to stay with the habitat till further contact ambassador’s from the Federation arrived, further the Sybl had agreed they would be sending one of their long range trade convoys to the closest Federation station, that being Deep Space K-5 to establish further contacts and trade deals. By the end of it all the interview had lasted a good hour and a half. =/\= Well I think this interview was quite enlightening for all parties concerned would you not say Habitat Master Dol? =/\= the caster asked.

=/\= Indeed! I am quite pleased how this went, it was far more enjoyable then many during my term or those I have read about in our historical books. I look forward to having Lieutenant Tia with us in time’s ahead, and further contact from the Federation.=/\= he said.

=/\= Once more we here on our Habitat thank our friends from the Sybl for their visit and participation on our interview, with our new friends from the United Federation of Planets and their crew aboard the USS Merrimack. Stay tuned for our award winning show ‘When The Tables Turn!’ here on HNC after these messages! =/\= With that the lights dimmed in the news casting room, and Dol spoke interring that the broader broadcast had ended.

=/\= Thank you as well Lieutenant Commander. I do hope your Captain David Glen is given my thanks for this, may you all take care in our journeys and return safely to your homes. =/\= He said, and after final exchanges were made the comm line closed.

With things wrapped up for this successful first contact, the crew of the Merrimack and the ship would soon see Tia off to her new life on the habitat for now, and then set course first back to Alstair Prime where they made a quick exchange to deliver the misplaced child to its proper family and home from the Habitat. Thankfully no feelings were hurt from the two Alstair parents and the Habitat Seed child was eager to get things straightened out. From there the Merrimack then set course back to Federation space for whatever may present itself in their next mission!
