Cross was on day shift and since Sickbay was relatively quiet she took the opportunity to clean the mess on her desks, piles of Padds.empty coffee mugs, single sheets of papers scattered every where, a hypospray plus half a dozen vitamin pills and an empty toffee jar.

Cross CMO.

Stanley was glad to have heard from Doctor Cross. More for her sake than for his assignment here even. When he entered the doctor’s office, he was wearing a serape with vertical red, yellow and green stripes. He wore loose maroon pants and wore leather sandals on his feet. And to complete his professional look he had a tan cloth bag across his shoulder where numerous medical supplies were stored as well as a voice recorder.

Stanley beamed as he saw Cross. “Ah! Doctor Cross there you are. It’s wonderful to see you again! ” He then looked behind him quickly and in a lower voice asked. “Should I close the door?”

Dr. Stanley Wong

Cross was putting the dirty mugs from the top of the desk into a drawer,on hearing Stanley’s voice the doctor leaped up from her chair this was followed by a cracking sound.Looking down Cross saw Hunter’s mug in two pieces ‘’Gee Mr Wong you scared the living daylights out of me ‘’closing the drawer with her knee the doctor continued ‘’Yes do please close the door ‘’ as he did so she took a good look at the psychiatrist ‘’Mr Wong it seem like you have just jumped from a Charles Dickens book with that attire ‘’ the female doctor commented.

Cross CMO.

Stanley looked down at himself as if he really hadn’t noticed what he was wearing. “I know! It’s bright and happy, no?” He lifted
the serape and said to Cross. “I’ve mixed up my heritage a bit. An old-fashioned Latin serape as one might find in Cuba and well the leather sandals were a product of Shanghai.” He looked across at the desk at Cross and asked in a cheery polite voice, “And how have you been Lieutenant Cross. Have you been sleeping well? You certainly are looking somewhat more relaxed today!”

Dr. Stanley Wong

She arched her eyebrow, any Vulcan would have envied at the description of his cloths then smiled ‘’Yes I certainly am ‘’Cross replied And I do hope its stays that way she thought.

‘’Do take a seat Stanley ‘’ the doctor offered, as she also pulled her chair nearer to his .Now Cross made eye contact with him ‘’I do not want this session to end like the previous two,so how about laying some rules?’‘ Cross asked ‘’First I would much prefer that we communicate and express our thoughts, feelings or ideas through speech or words, second no matter how we convey or express ourselves in a particular way or manner do we get irked by one another..is that a deal? Stanly studying to became a doctor we did have lectures in psychology, after all we do it all the time with our patients but how you go about it is strange to me, so do bear with me on this one… lets tolerate each other ‘’.
Cross CMO.

Stanley’s smile grew more and more with each sentence that passed. It was more than obvious that he was pleased at what Cross was saying. “My dear Doctor Cross.” he began. “I would be more than happy to converse with you. The entire fill the beakers episode was merely a crude yet very effective way to get a look inside of a persons mind and how they see themselves and the world around them.

‘’Dear doctor what works for some does not necessary work for others’‘.

“And while I have no doubt that when you studied you touched on psychology, I can pretty much say that your study of psychology was probably the equal to my study of Vulcan physiology.” Stanley’s smile seemed to flee for a moment before he began to address Cross. “My methods seem odd to you because they are mine. Mine and mine alone. I hate to brag but I have actually been published! And doctor to be brutally honest everything from my clothing to my demeanor is intended to put people at ease. To make them feel superior to me. To make them not see me as a threat.”

‘’Don’t bet on that,I could be analyzing you just as much as you are analyzing me’‘ Cross smiled ‘’So did Sigmund Freud on psyhosexual theories and its nauseating to say the least. As for what you wear ,it would be better to stay neutral rather then put them at ‘Ease ‘ you could be doing the opposite ,as you know no two brains think alike’‘.

With his stern professional face still in place Stanley said, “I don’t know whether it was my technique or my agitation of you. But I am simply glad you have finally agreed to see me and to seek out a bit of help. For you see we are much alike you and me. We do not take defeat lightly. approach each and every patient as if they were someone being threatened by some mythical dragon and I some slightly small and unhealthy-looking Sino-Cuban knight come to the rescue.”

‘’Its still too early to mention a ‘bit of a help’,especially since I do not know what help I am suppose to be seeking ‘’.

Stanley set his bag down on the floor and pulled out a small recorder which he then placed on the corner of Doctor Cross’s desk. “So, doctor.” he began. “You must surely know that to cure a patient with a bad infection that you must first find out whether the infection is viral or bacteriological. So, tell me then what do you think is causing your weight loss? Your seeming aversion to food? For we must think of your weight loss as we would some common infection. Before we can work on everything else, we must first save your body.”

Dr. Wong

The female doctor eyed the recorder ‘’Dear Stanly I might not be bothered with certain answers being recorded but not all,so I can refuse to answer or you could switch it off to hear me out . On would definitely loose weight spending about three years going through places around the word on foot ,backed then I cherished the solitude.
Having said that with regards to food I had to hunt, eat fruit when it was available and berries when I was lucky. There where times when I went to sleep on an empty stomach’‘.

Cross stopped and looked at the recorder ‘’Back on the Merrimack ,Hunter who did my medical was alarmed, for not only had I deprived my body of food but also essential vitamins and minerals ..nothing that I had already knew’‘ she took a deep breath ‘’He would put a hypospray and medication on my desk to take but being thick headed and stubborn I would throw them away ‘’ now she was wrapping a curl of hair around her finger ‘’He did talk to me ,he took the time to explain and asked......’‘ Cross stopped dead in her tracks for she was about to give away something she wanted to keep secret.

Cross CMO.

Stanley watched Cross as she spoke. And more precisely watched her body language. She played with her hair. It was almost too much for him. A simple childish thing like that. She was signaling nervousness and uncertainty. Stanley reached forward and turned off the recorder and pushed it across the desk until it came to rest in front of Cross. “We will let you record what you wish if you choose to record anything. If you choose to record something, then I want you to listen to it and delete anything you don’t want me or anyone else to hear.”

Stanley then spoke to Cross saying now in a stern voice. “I have talked to your captain about a great many things doctor Cross. I know about some secret operation you were on. I do not know, nor do I want to know all the details. What I do know is that you were injured. You still are injured. Once again would you want to treat a patient of yours for an injury, or would you want to know how they got the injury? If you feel you have to name a place name, then insert something false. The same with technology or people or species. We will work this way if you want. For I am here to close the wound not to find out the sort of weapon it was made by. Are we clear?”

Dr. Wong.

‘’Stanly I really do not know why I’m afraid to talk about it,even when I joined the Academy they knew and it did not bother them so maybe I’m afraid to tell you cause you’ll think I can loose my sanity ‘’ at this point Cross was ready to open up ‘’ My biological father in the embryonic stage had a gene altered to enhance Athleticism, stronger ,a high pain tolerance etc,yes it was unethical but who can stop private labs working underground ? He passed on the gene to me and I’m in constant need for any kind of stimulation.I do get that working in sickbay or going to the gym to work out ,my favorite is the punch bag ‘’at this point the doctor managed to smile ‘’But I was causing to much trouble especially when on an away missions, often I’ll leave the team and go by myself disobeying orders that was the reason I left the ship three years ago..it wasn’t fair that the Captain ,previous XO and others tolerated me.It was unacceptable and disrespectful on my part’‘.

Cross bit on her lower lip wondering if what she was saying will eventually lead to her being kicked out of Star Fleet once the psychiatrist who was assessing and evaluating her would come to that conclusion. Then that small voice in her head which she heard last was on the habitat and had been with her for the past three years was back Go on Miriam you have come this far don’t stop.

‘’I was refusing treatment cause I was afraid that once I regained my strength I’ll be back to my old ways again, doctor Hunter saw the medication he would put on my desk for me were in the bin and wanted to know why? .I finally opened up and told him,he explained that there are people who own this gene they often travel a lot, they particularly like challenging places, places far beyond safe areas and even recommended areas with many risks and dangers’‘.

‘’In addition, the group can also thrive when working in a highly volatile environment and will be stifled if they have to do duplicate, daily tasks. In some cases, some people in the upper group also have a hobby of dancing, trying stimulant drugs and doing things that are not ‘safe’.
‘’After years of research, scientists have finally found the reason for these actions. Called DRD4-7R , this is a special gene variant that makes people live on the wild side of life, scientists estimate that about 20% of the world’s population possesses the gene’‘.

Stanley with much sincerity gave his full attention to Cross as she spoke. He could tell by the small hesitations in her voice and various other signs in her body language that speaking to him was at the same time painful and frightening. But he could tell that the information she was giving him was something she needed desperately to tell someone. It was something that had been bubbling beneath the surface too long for her. It was something that frightened her.

All the time she spoke Stanley sat with his chin resting on his fist. His eyes never left her, and he paid rapt attention to her every word. When she was done speaking, he sighed and leaned back in his chair rubbing idly at one of his eyes. He looked at Miriam then and said, “Well first let me congratulate you, Miriam.” I have often wished that I was as equally blessed as you. Let me explain. At one point in history a few half apes left their homes in Africa and literally began to walk across the planet. Another time cities were built. Boats were built and people sailed over a horizon not knowing if there was anything there or not. Later people got into vehicles no more than fancy cans and were thrown into space using explosives. And on and on it goes. People like you have led in nearly all aspects of human history. Nothing has ever been accomplished by those who stayed home. “

Stanley smiled as he said “These genes you complain of are a blessing. And I think it is time you accepted them as such. I don’t know who it was but at some point, someone told you that it was a bad thing. And while there does come some unfortunate side effects from this gene it’s nothing that can’t be fixed simply by a healthy diet and a small change of lifestyle. And from what you tell me you have already begun by using the gym.”

Stanley steepled his fingers in front of him and knitted his brow. For the moment I would encourage you to quit taking any medications. I want to encourage you to eat anything you desire. I would not waste my time with vitamins. Make your body do its work. I would also encourage your forays to the gym. Try two hours per day with any exercise you can tolerate. And in your spare time I would also encourage you to take up learning something new and different. ” Stanley smiled then and said, “Maybe psychology, eh? You might want to read one of my articles.”

‘’Sure I would like that ‘’.

‘’As a doctor I am aware that I need certain vitamins which by body lacks at least for the time being and don’t remind me of a diet! If Hunter happens to see me going to eat he’ll start by giving me a list and a headache of what I should eat !’‘ Cross exclaimed putting a hand on her forehead, then she went on ‘’It was him that explained what I know now, somehow I get the feeling that he’s not well liked by certain crew members and cannot figure why. He’s a diligent worker ,most of the time he stays behind long after his shift endes’‘ the female doctor shrugged her shoulders ‘’It does not look like he’s bothered but then no one knows how he feels inside’‘.

Leaning forward then Stanley looked into Cross’s eyes and said to her, And care about yourself Miriam. For to help and care for others efficiently you must first care for yourself. And focus. Always watch what you are doing. There is nothing wrong with you it is just that you are blessed by something that you were never taught to understand.”

Dr. Wong.

Cross nodded with enthusiasm, then asked ‘’Do I have more sessions Mr Wong?’‘ she put the question in a slightly different way this time, lest Stanly go nuts.

Cross CMO.

Stanley beamed in response. “As much as I would love to Miriam, I think that you might be very busy. I want you to take a week and follow the orders I have just given you. After seven days of this then I will want to speak to you to check on your progress. I we both can agree that the first portion of your problems are disappearing then we will move on to something else. If you feel the need to talk to me during the week though don’t hesitate to come, see me whatever time or place you need. How does that sound?”
