By now down the hill the group of about 30 odd natives were moving up the hill cautiously looking around every big hunk of scrap, dirt, or junk poking at it as if expecting ‘demons’ to jump out and attack them. They were at the current pace about 100 or so yards out down slope.

”…well we know that it isn’t a bacteria, but has evolved from that,” Captain Glen continued in a whisper, “So, I think we should stop using that term as people start worrying about debilitating illnesses and their own mortality. It only appears to function as a bacteria, but it’s actually a symbiotic micro-cellular biogenesis. No one has died from it, no one has become ill, and the effects on the sensory and muscular systems of people who came into contact with it, was to give them almost comic book superhuman abilities… That isn’t to say we shouldn’t be wary of it. As Lieutenant Aphelion just said, we know nothing about the long-term effects.”

Hunter nodded without saying a word,it seemed that with this bacteria who ever gave them the information had omitted some important facts and he made a mental note to tell Cross, that is if they ever managed to get out of there alive .He was not so enthusiastic about what he was hearing ....it seemed the inhabitants were approaching closer .

“Yes, they are getting rather closer now…” Glen said. “Lt. Del Wolf, can you suggest anything non-lethal that will scare them off? Apart from stunning the first couple that appear…like heating up the concrete ground surface so it’s too hot to stand on? We need just enough room that they can’t throw things at us, but they can still hear us. Otherwise, it’s Plan B.”

Lance started to check his gear “I have 2 flash bangs And 3 smokes. we can use the flash bangs sir” he said get it ready.

Glen thought and replied, “this is a lot harder than I expected. I want to talk to them without them thinking we are Demons. Your flash bangs and smokes, or stunning them with phasers, either of those will appear to be magic, re-inforcing the idea we are evil spirits that I want to avoid.”

’‘ Through and through in every detail ‘’ Hunter muttered under his breath ‘’How did the Klingon’s manage to convince them that they were gods, taking into consideration their looks as a species !’‘ .

Verity laughed, she had wondered the same thing. Who could ever think the Klingons were Gods save prideful, ruthlessness and brutal dictators.

Overheat in the ground will make them think we are demons. Flash bang and smoke will make them think we are demons. Stunning them will make them think we are demons. “ Captain I have a theory, the Klingons they value fighting, honor in battle. Maybe if we offer them a challenge for honor maybe they will see us as gods also”

’‘ What a great idea Lt !’‘ the doctor exclaimed as he looked from Lance to Glen, wondering which one of them would volunteer. That is if the Captain planned such a scheme .

Verity looked at Hunter side-eyed.

Glen thought that Dr. Hunter seemed a little over-enthusiastic about this idea, but it didn’t look like he wanted to volunteer himself.

“I wanted to avoid cowboy diplomacy to resolve this if possible,” Glen said. “But tell me a little more about how your plan might work before I dismiss it outright. Do you really think they would have taken part in gladiatorial battles with the Klingons during their stay here?”

“I believe so sir the first time we were here we saw a ring for training and I saw a few wooden Klingons weapons. So I think with the battle ring and the wooden weapons I thing there culture is based around fighting and honor” he said to the captain “ as the COS I will volunteer to fight”

Given they had intel that the Klingons used them for mining and such due to their strength and since they also had seen that the girl had showed signs of the Klingons sense of honor and the like mixed with their own native religion this probably wasnt a bad idea to get things started. That said if they were going to do so they should probably yell it out soon since the groups were getting slowly closer.

Verity frowned, “We are not here to fight with the natives and we certainly should not make them think we are Gods. That is ridiculous. The Klingons took advantage of these primitive people and their beliefs. We should not be trying to do the same.”

Glen had thought they could somehow persuade the natives that Gods didn’t destroy and poison their own planet, or mistreat their faithful followers. That a God was benign rather than vengeful. That the desolation caused here could only be the result of a mortal and ungodly enemy. That if they could prove themselves to be mortal and just like them, they would gain their respect and change the ideas they had already learned. Clearly, that was no longer going to work. The ideas had become too ingrained, the indoctrination too strong. However, his orders had strictly ruled against appearing as Gods to these natives.

Glen thought Lance’s alternative was a crazy idea but he hadn’t really thought through what they would do instead. He wasn’t going to tell anyone that because it would make him appear to be a rather poor tactician, but a contest between two champions, ingenuity against ingenuity, brute strength against brute strength, that just seemed a little backward. It was what the Metrons had imposed upon the Federation and the Gorn, after they had attacked and destroyed Cestus Three.

On the other hand, the Merrimack could hold a Transporter lock on them and beam them away if Lance got into any trouble. He did hold the high ground here, and had better weapons and extensive training in combat. What could go wrong?

“Well, okay…” Glen tentatively said, “Tell them by using the UT and put it on loudspeaker mode so they all hear.”

  • Glen, CO

“So how are we going to do this, Captain? If the CoS gets the crap beaten out of him or vice versa, either way, we just walk up to the natives and say “Hey we would like to talk to you”?

V. Aphelion, CSO

Max laughed at what Aphelion said. He thought it was funny about the CoS potentially getting the crap beaten out of him. This was not something which was normally said about a Star-fleet security officer. Normally they were the best of the best when it comes to combat. Max knew he would get his butt handed to him. Max finished up getting the soil and air sample he was trying to out with. He then said to Aphelion, “I have the soil and air samples I was working on gathering for you.” He then continued watching what was going on. He was hoping there was something to come up with a way to cure this bacteria. He then just stood there and continued to listen.
