[snip]

Glen thought and replied, “this is a lot harder than I expected. I want to talk to them without them thinking we are Demons. Your flash bangs and smokes, or stunning them with phasers, either of those will appear to be magic, re-inforcing the idea we are evil spirits that I want to avoid.”

’‘ Through and through in every detail ‘’ Hunter muttered under his breath ‘’How did the Klingon’s manage to convince them that they were gods, taking into consideration their looks as a species !’‘ .

Verity laughed, she had wondered the same thing. Who could ever think the Klingons were Gods save prideful, ruthlessness and brutal dictators.

Overheat in the ground will make them think we are demons. Flash bang and smoke will make them think we are demons. Stunning them will make them think we are demons. “ Captain I have a theory, the Klingons they value fighting, honor in battle. Maybe if we offer them a challenge for honor maybe they will see us as gods also”

’‘ What a great idea Lt !’‘ the doctor exclaimed as he looked from Lance to Glen, wondering which one of them would volunteer. That is if the Captain planned such a scheme .

Verity looked at Hunter side-eyed.

Glen thought that Dr. Hunter seemed a little over-enthusiastic about this idea, but it didn’t look like he wanted to volunteer himself.

“I wanted to avoid cowboy diplomacy to resolve this if possible,” Glen said. “But tell me a little more about how your plan might work before I dismiss it outright. Do you really think they would have taken part in gladiatorial battles with the Klingons during their stay here?”

“I believe so sir the first time we were here we saw a ring for training and I saw a few wooden Klingons weapons. So I think with the battle ring and the wooden weapons I thing there culture is based around fighting and honor” he said to the captain “ as the COS I will volunteer to fight”

Given they had intel that the Klingons used them for mining and such due to their strength and since they also had seen that the girl had showed signs of the Klingons sense of honor and the like mixed with their own native religion this probably wasnt a bad idea to get things started. That said if they were going to do so they should probably yell it out soon since the groups were getting slowly closer.

Verity frowned, “We are not here to fight with the natives and we certainly should not make them think we are Gods. That is ridiculous. The Klingons took advantage of these primitive people and their beliefs. We should not be trying to do the same.”

Glen had thought they could somehow persuade the natives that Gods didn’t destroy and poison their own planet, or mistreat their faithful followers. That a God was benign rather than vengeful. That the desolation caused here could only be the result of a mortal and ungodly enemy. That if they could prove themselves to be mortal and just like them, they would gain their respect and change the ideas they had already learned. Clearly, that was no longer going to work. The ideas had become too ingrained, the indoctrination too strong. However, his orders had strictly ruled against appearing as Gods to these natives.

Glen thought Lance’s alternative was a crazy idea but he hadn’t really thought through what they would do instead. He wasn’t going to tell anyone that because it would make him appear to be a rather poor tactician, but a contest between two champions, ingenuity against ingenuity, brute strength against brute strength, that just seemed a little backward. It was what the Metrons had imposed upon the Federation and the Gorn, after they had attacked and destroyed Cestus Three.

On the other hand, the Merrimack could hold a Transporter lock on them and beam them away if Lance got into any trouble. He did hold the high ground here, and had better weapons and extensive training in combat. What could go wrong?

“Well, okay…” Glen tentatively said, “Tell them by using the UT and put it on loudspeaker mode so they all hear.”

“So how are we going to do this, Captain? If the CoS gets the crap beaten out of him or vice versa, either way, we just walk up to the natives and say “Hey we would like to talk to you”?

Max laughed at what Aphelion said. He thought it was funny about the CoS potentially getting the crap beaten out of him. This was not something which was normally said about a Star-fleet security officer. Normally they were the best of the best when it comes to combat. Max knew he would get his butt handed to him. Max finished up getting the soil and air sample he was trying to out with. He then said to Aphelion, “I have the soil and air samples I was working on gathering for you.” He then continued watching what was going on. He was hoping there was something to come up with a way to cure this bacteria. He then just stood there and continued to listen.

Pashi had been listening to the back and forth and before anyone could do something she jumped up and in a loud, lyrical voice, stated in Klingon “We are here to talk to the leaders of this group. If this requires some form of ritual please inform us.” Pashi looked back at the rest,”A universal translator will not carry far enough for them to understand, until they are within distance to throw things.” She stated this with a smile. “Besides, sounded to me like you all wanted to spend all day debating the subject. I for one wish to move things along.”

‘’If I may ‘’ Hunter jumped in the conversation ‘’ One of us should approach them and do the universal sign of peace ,as we both look and dressed alike they have no indication who we really are ‘’ he stopped to think ‘’True the child might have told them but what they see does not quite match up with her description and if that fails we’ll go to plan B which would be getting the hell out of here, after all its not like they are falling dead like flies and need our immediate assistance’‘ he finished off half expecting the captain to tell him....how about going to hell yourself !.

The doctor knew that the Captain did not consider or deem him to have any given value.

Verity nodded because that sounded more reasonable. “Captain? What do you think? Should we let the CoS fight it out with one of the natives or attempt to approach them with the Universal Sign of Peace?” Verity had no idea what it was, but she looked at Pashi because she was sure she would know what it was but was wary of putting her science officer in danger. “Maybe we can let the CoS approach them since he wanted to fight it out with them.” If he got it wrong and the natives attacked they could have a head running start.

Lance looked at the CSO “ correction I don’t want to fight But judging this group based on the Klingon belief of battle and honor might be the best approach. Remember, what happened in the Klingon war every time we told them we come in peace they will start fire because piece to them means weakness.”

Pashi sighed and blew a stray strand of hair out of her face “Allow me to advance and meet them. The child did speak with me and even though she spit in my face, I did not react the way she expected. Besides I am from Andoria, my people are warriors through and through.”

This time Hunter jumped in front of her ‘’No,no…I know you mean well but you look so different ‘’ the doctor tried to reason with her ,true it was a rather awkward situation yet he did not want her to take this in a dishonorable way or sound disrespectful ,after all he held her in high regard ‘’We have specifically put on the same clothes as them for a reason, cause there is not much of a difference between them and us as humanoids . Please understand Lt , it would be confusing to the inhabitants’‘.

Glen was puzzled. He wished Cara was here with her socialogical and anthroplogical knowledge. “Hold on one moment!” Glen said, “I’ve taken on board everything everyone has said… but, what is the Universal Sign of Peace?”

Hunter put his right hand over his chest, his fingers wrapped up in a fist over where his heart was ‘’Maybe the inhabitants would understand that its a sign of peace ..maybe not ‘’ he trailed off ‘’And for those who want to fight, skillful, trained and experienced as you might be remember this is not a movie.Use your common sense here , there are too many of them and too few of us ‘’ the doctor took a deep breath ‘’I have nothing more to add ‘’.

Glen had decided that given how mean and menacing the natives looked now, Dr. Hunter might be right. Lance seemed to have changed his mind, and the others thought a fight between chmpions was a bad idea, despite the notorious first contact between the Gorn and Federation. However, Pashi had an idea, and no one else did.

=/\= Glen to Merrimack. Transporter Room, please get a transporter lock on our party and hold it ready for an emergency beam out. =/\=

Joe after giving the CO’s orders to the crew in the transporter room toggled up the switch for the comms and answered the captain. =/\= Captain this is Milligan. We have locks on all our personal and ready to transport at your command.” =/\=

=/\= Standby =/\= Glen replied. Then Glen thought of Plan C, a somewhat frivolous suggestion made by Joe earlier in the day. =/\= I’m ready to try anything now, Commander. =/\=
