At the same time, Ade was returning back to the bar after visiting the head, where he had relieved his small bladder, after drinking so much beer. He had overheard the comments about “heathens” and “best parties” but couldn’t understand the Chief’s permanent scowl or his abrupt exit, as he hadn’t heard the rest of the conversation.

“What is the problem with the COS?” Ade asked. “He’s correct about parties in the United States of Africa though. We hold the best traditional festivals in the world, and have healers with powers that 23rd Century medicine cannot explain. It’s getting late though, maybe I should turn in too?”

Tia smiled up at the man who came over. “It was late. Maybe he was tired.” She shrugged not willing to give up the privacy of others. But also because she wasn’t entirely sure. His leaving had been abrupt enough to leave her questioning it.

When he mentioned turning in, Tia nodded. “Probably a good idea. First shift comes quickly. I think I’m heading back to my quarters as well.” She rose and stepped over to put the empty glasses on the bar. With a smile and nod to the tender, she stopped back by Ade. “If you are heading out the door, I’m going the same way.” She laughed. “Wanna join me in an adventure into the corridors of this wonderful ship?” She felt the drink hitting her since standing up. Thankfully she wasn’t drunk, but she was definitely feeling the affects of the synthihal just enough to feel warm and sleepy.

“Yes, okay!” replied Ade. “…’this wonderful ship’ …Argh! I just realised who you are! The new Chief Engineer. So, it’s your wonderful ship now?”

Tia laughed. “Yes, though I was being sarcastic. And I’m just the Temp Chief Engineer. I have my check in with the XO tomorrow. I’ll find out then if someone else is coming, or if I get to keep the title. Not sure which one I’m wishing for more.” She smiled as they headed into the corridor. “So you have me at a disadvantage. I’m Tia, Tia Ezial.” She held out her hand smiling knowing it was an odd thing in the middle of the hall after speaking this long. But she was an easy going person who was quick with a smiling moment. She just hoped the one with her was as easy going and would see the silliness in the gesture.

“Ade!” returning the gesture without thinking it silly at all, merely a little old-fashioned, but then he was an old-fashioned type of guy. “People usually come to see me when their cavities are hurting, so I don’t tend to see their best sides. It’s nice to meet them more informally.”

Tia smiled. “I guess it’s a good thing my sweet tooth is limited. Would hate to meet you under horrible circumstances.” She released his hand and started walking again. “So how long have you been on the ship? Any advice for the new crewmember?” She laughed and clasped her hands behind her back as they walked.

“Oh! Not so long! I just look like I’m part of the furniture, but only about a year… after all that time-travel business that they think no one knows about and pretend not to talk about, but before we got stuck out on the edge of known space with no way back again. And I would hesitate to give you any advice since I never follow my own advice. Lets see… the crew here care deeply about each other. If you do the same, that will probably get you through anything.”
