A Vulcan male who was also reading the data off quietly then looked up and spoke up. “Captain. I believe that in agreement with the Khitomer accords, the Klingons consolidated their border as part of the agreement. They would have not wanted to give it up. However they had to.” He stated rather matter of factly. He turned his brown eyes to the rest of them his face thoughtful. “It is a wonder that they have managed to survive in these conditions. I would agree. If we could persuade them to move, it would be better for them as a whole. As for why we are unaffected without taking a sample back and trying to strip it down to the genome… we may not be able to tell. My best guess, and it is only that. That it is the bacteria responds well to certain dna configurations.” The Vulcan runs a hand through his short brown hair, gently scratching the back of his head. “It will require further testing on the Merrimack.”

“Thank you, Saelk,” Glen replied. “I guess the Klingons were given little choice. As for having these people move, I can’t see that happening. I’ve never come across a group of people more obstinate and uncompromising as these. Let us get the samples taken back to the Merrimack then.”

“I want to talk to the Elders now, face to face,” Glen told them. “Does anyone wish to accompany me?”

‘’I’ll accompany you Captain ,that is if you don’t mind ‘’ Hunter replied.

“Please do,” Glen replied. “You can advise me on the medical findings and make sure I give them the correct information.”

Glen seemed to be in a hurry to meet with the Elders ‘’ Hey Captain wait for me ‘’ Hunter hurried his pace to catch up with him.

‘’From what Verity said after the analysis and from the knowledge I have which isn’t much, the bacteria could have taken thousands or millions of years to adapt in its present DNA .Its truly mind blowing that it can sequence its DNA to each individual ‘’ Hunter replied .He thought for a couple of seconds ‘’I suppose its not much different from how our gut bacteria works ,I’m wondering why it has not effected us since we have been down here ..maybe something in these humanoid ‘s bodies make the bacteria easier for it to adapt? ‘’..

“More intensive testing aboard the Merrimack might help us to discover,” Glen replied, “but it maybe something we will never know.”

The doctor thought for a moment ‘’At this point its just hypothesis, the Klingon’s also said the bacteria had no effect on them and… and’‘ Hunter tried to catch his breath ‘’The inhabitants seem to be health, its not that they are dropping dead ‘’ with that he looked back at the tall strong woman with the spear in her hand *I sure don’t want to pick up a fight with her * the doctor thought.

“We don’t know how many have died,” Glen said, ” because we don’t know their original population to compare, but I think you are correct since it hasn’t killed any of our crew.”

Saelk walked over to join the entourage. “As a precautionary measure, I would recommend that I accompany you as well. I do not know how much the strength of these people have been augmented. However in raw strength I would fair better than any of you.” He said somewhat rather bluntly.

“Don’t worry about that,” Glen told him. “if we could deal with Cara’s tail, we can deal with these natives. The Elder Council are probably quite old men and old women anyway, for whom the bacterial improvements won’t scratch the surface of their deteriorating health issues. In any case, I’d like you to take charge here, in my absence, and organise the collection and safe handling of these medical and water samples, back to the to the Merrimack, if possible. Once there, we will need a more intensive analysis performed. You can see that everything is put away here too.!

“As you wish Captain.” Saelk moved back to the collection teams. He took the samples they collected and began to pack them away into cases for transport.

When Joe had returned in the Shuttle, he had left behind the Security team that he’d brought to serve food, so there were a lot more helping hands now to pack the cases than there had been to unpack them. A science officer was checking everything was correctly labelled. Guy Fleegman was helping pack the water sample bottles into protective bubble wrap before placing into transport boxes. He couldn’t handle the blood samples as he couldn’t stand the sight of blood.

Calm down, Guy thought to himself, it’s been hundreds of days since the last redshirt died.

“Sir?” Guy asked Saelk, “Shall we call down the Shuttle again to return the samples or will we Transport them back?”

  • Guy, Sec

Saelk paused as he had stopped putting the canisters away for a moment and had started to inspect one of the water samples. “Call the shuttle down. We don’t want to risk anything happening to the samples.” He said thoughtfully, if it was completely inorganic materials then he would have had them transported back to the ship, but with the samples, and wanted to make sure that they were as viable as possible. “It will also serve to take some of us back as well.”
