[snip & a correction - apologies]

Seeming to recall something as the Captain got up, Brians amended his speech, “..Oh Captain, one uh, small detail..” he said ominously.

”..One of the repair members overseeing the refit and repair of the Merrimack is a Caitian by the name of Emi’Ko has been a former worker and designer on the Mariner class. She’s....shall we say quite strongly attached to the well being of ship’s she helped design and build. The Merrimack being one of them. As a result she’s been.....vocal about your shall we say ‘rough care taking’ of ‘her’ engines. So just to make you aware she might come off a bit brash and possessive when you meet her.” he said.

“Right-ho!” replied Glen, “I can assure her that any challenging behaviour was simply a matter of survival, both of ours and the Merrimack herself, but that she has always performed well beyond anything we might have asked her, Sir!”

“Thanks for the heads up!” added Glen. “I’m go back now and organise the Shore Leave, Sir!”

As Glen walked out, he almost walked into someone standing in the hall.

Right outside the Office was a 7’ tall Caitian woman, who was not looking at all happy. Her uniform was slightly modified from standard, being that she wore a skirt instead of pants, and instead of boots had a pair of armored leg guards on that were specifically shaped for her Digitigrade legs. she was like all Caitians covered from head to toebean in fur. Hers was tawny in color, though there were stripes slightly darker shade that blended into the Tawny color, thus making her look somewhat like a mix of an earth Lion and Tiger. on the end of her tail was a tuft of dark brown fur adding to the lion-like looks. The dark brown hair on top of her head, had been styled into a pixie cut her eyes were a bright yellow with slit pupils.

The woman marched up to the captain, “Hello Captain, My name is Lieutenant Emi’ko. My team and I will be Assisting with the Repairs!” she purred politely, as she fell into step with the captain and offering a paw for him to shake.

Glen couldn’t remember having met a Caitian before, though his memory wasn’t great since he had reached 35. He was aware there were many in Starfleet. This must be the ship designer that Brians had just warned him about.

“Hello!” replied Glen. “I guess you already know, but I’m Captain John T Glen of the Starship Merrimack.”

after he replied she continued ,”However, captain may I Speak Freely for a moment?” she asked, though from the look in her eyes, anyone could see she was bearly containing her anger. and whether or not he gave her permission she was probably going to say what she wanted to say anyway.

“Yes, of course,” replied Glen, “though Commodore Brians has already mentioned your concerns, and maybe you’d rather discuss them in my office aboard the Merrimack… or the bar in Deep Space K-5 and I’ll get you a drink?”

This offer took her aback she had to think for a moment and was not sure what the captain’s intentions were “your office is fine captain however I will forgo the drink for now I wish to keep my head clear so that I may get to the repairs of the Merrimack!” she said clearly though she was still clearly nearly holding back what she wanted to say

“Commander Brians asked me to try and be a little more…Diplomatic when it comes to my…nature concerning My ships” she added as they rode the Turbolift “with that being said please understand I am still working on that part of myself if I get…Carried away” she added with a soft purr

“I have no problem with you expressing your feelings, or being protective of the Mariner Class, or even being passionate about a cause,” said Glen. “It is just that, many of the scrapes we have got ourselves into were totally beyond my control. And as I said to Brians earlier, it was often a matter of survival, both of ours and the Merrimack herself, and she has always performed well beyond anything we might have asked her, otherwise I wouldn’t be standing here!”

I have no issues with doing what needs to be done to save the ship and the crew aboard Please do not mistake my complaints” the tall Feline woman answered “However the fact the Merrimack has had the equivalent of 1 MAJOR repair session for each year of her life thus far! Not to mention…” she bent down and began to say in a hushed tone “Equipping her even for a short time with a Romulan Cloaking Device!?!?! Not only did you defile her systems with Romulan Garbage but just using that thing was technically Illegal! I simply don’t like the ships I design doing such activities!!!” she added bringing her voice back to normal “If a Ship causes trouble legal or otherwise Usually the name of the Designer gets dragged through the mud with the crew!”

Glen quickly looked to see if anyone had overheard but they were still alone. “That’s classified, top secret information! …but I do take your point,” Glen said. “What can I say? We been out on the edges of Known Space, fighting our way through for the very survival of the Federation, every inch of the way kicking butts for Starfleet, cheating fate as we clawed our way up, and always going far beyond the call of duty… out there where new worlds are conquered, and old galaxies destroyed… well, under those circumstances, I never saw that I was pushing the Merrimack to her limits anymore than if she was one of my own officers. But if you need to blame someone, you’re totally correct to blame me solely. My engineers were just following their orders, and please don’t take it out on my new CE. She’s only been here five minutes and she carries no responsibility for any of the activities you’ve described!”

“I mean, she was strongly opposed to the…” Glen looked around again, but they were still alone. “…to the ‘time’ correcting machine that we built in the last mission that ran off power from the Warp drive. And I know she disapproves of the way Kord makes ship system controls using his internal electrical outputs… Anyway, just because the Merrimack has achieved operational levels beyond those that she was designed for is not in itself wrong or dangerous. We have developed our own simulations to prevent accidents and to protect and mitigate. We ran these several times in the last mission before turning on the machine, but I can tell you that the machine was vital if you want everything you hold dear in this world to remain the same… honestly, if you have access to classified documents, you know that what we have done has saved the universe as we know it countless times, so I have no qualms over breaking a few rules.”

“As for the maintenance schedule…” Glen defended, “…was it really only one major repair session per year? What can I say, the ship was away from Earth in deep space for five years. We had rarely been back at all until last year. It is hard to find authorised repair facilities when you are on the edge of the Federation. I’m sure you wouldn’t have wanted dodgy mechanics from any old repair shop to sabotage the Merrimack systems? We’ve been busy, that’s all!”

-Glen, CO

“I…I see you have given me something to think about captain…” she purred simply “I will go down to engineering and introduce myself and get to work with the others” she added as the turbolift came to a halt and opened up to let them off
