Joseph entered the main Judicial Offices in the Government Tower. It was his Second stop after arriving. After a short meeting with the Governor, he decided that a meeting with the fairly new Head of the Judicial system was in order. Besides Preston Longstreet, he was going to be working with her the most for the foreseeable future. On his way there he met with his assistant who gave him his wrist-mounted Computer Interface Panel. He attached it to his left wrist and activated it. The stream of information came almost immediately, his personal access point to the Police Database and surveillance system. As he arrived at the door of Judge Rousseau he closed the interface and it turned the same shade of blue as his suit, essentially hiding in plain sight. After a short conversation with the staff, he was let inside Rousseau’s offices. He adjusted his Windsor knot before opening the doors and taking a step inside “Judge Rousseau, I’m Joseph Karlson. I’m the new head of the police department.” The tall man smiled softly as he casually scanned the room.

Astrid stood at a large console so tall, she had to stand on tip toe in order to touch the top and slide a file into another one down below. Her dark chocolate hair was tied back in a braided knot with blue ribbon throughout the braids. The office, like the woman, was organized and formal. Her pale blue skirted suit was impeccable and her heels looked high but she seemed as at ease as she would be barefoot.

It was a lovely office with custom simulated white wood furniture in a very french style. The florals on the fabric were far more modern and subtle, but still gave the impression of french style. Astrid looked comfortable in her surroundings, like she fit there. One entire wall was floor to ceiling windows. In front of it was her desk and chair facing the door they just entered. There were two chairs in front of the desk and a sitting area past that complete with heavy looking bookshelves on one wall and a buffet along the other. And in one corner hung her judge’s robes, a far more modern affair than the giant mumu’s that used to be used. Still it was black and would give the impression of imposing impartiality and the weight of authority.

She looked down at her PaDD, made a note and then looked back up at the Console. Searching for an entry, she mumbled “mhmm” to herself when she found it and dragged it too to the file below. “Pardon,” she said a little absent minded in her soft French accent. “I will be with you in a moment s’il vous plaît.” She knew she was taking it for granted that the person who had come to her office could wait a minute longer as she finished her task. She knew it was mildly rude, but she did not wish to lose track of her task. It was vital that she found the remaining cases and put them in the schedule for the next week. She did move as fast as she could, finding cases and sliding them down into the schedule file. From there Sofi would put them on her docket.

Finally the dark haired woman turned and smiled warmly to her guest. She had been notified of the new police chief having been appointed. She straightened her suit jacket that was closed by a dark blue belt and a bird in flight clip and pale cream blouse with birds on it in vibrant blue. “Ah yes. Welcome to OED V Monsiour Karlson.” She put the PaDD on the desk and approached with her hand outstretched to shake his hand. Her voice was soft and slightly accented like her first words to him. “We are so glad to have someone of your record joining us here. Come. Let us sit. Would you like something to drink? It is almost tea time for me.”

Astrid Rousseau, HotJ

Joseph’s handshake was gently firm, his hand seemed to entirely engulf hers. “Thank you, Fröken” He sat down as he smiled at her, a kind smile “No thank you, I had something to drink with the Governor, at my Age overhydrating can be a problem.” Despite being in his late Sixties he barely looked over forty, maybe fifty, an unusual sight indeed. He placed his cane over his lap as he tried to get comfortable in his chair.

She nodded and took a seat in the chair next to his rather than going and sitting behind her desk. While they would be working together, they were not yet and she wanted their meeting to be more collaborative and social than sitting behind her desk would make it. She crossed her legs and seemed quite comfortable as the door opened and Sofi entered the Judge’s chambers with a tray of tea. This was normal for the judge so she paid it no heed at first. “Well then, I shall not press you sir. My first day here was only a little while ago. It can be both exciting and daunting but I do so love a good challenge. The Governor is a very formidable man, but perhaps for you, it is not so?”

Sofi turned with the prepared cup and handed it to Astrid. The Judge smiled warmly and thanked her kindly before she left them to conduct their meeting in peace. Some would grow weary of showing gratitude to subordinates, but Astrid wasn’t that kind of woman. Even though she had been working in the judiciary system for a long time now, she had not grown so cynical as all that. She sipped her tea and looked back at the mountain of a man.

Rousseau, HotJ

Joseph gave the Judge’s assistant a polite nod. It was interesting to meet someone who shared his fondness for real tea and for a moment he regretted not taking her up on the offer. He quickly suppressed the thought with a chuckle at her question “I don’t know about that, The Governor has had an impressive record” He turned himself slightly in his chair to better be able to face the young woman. “Worked his way through the ranks, survived being Borg, Captained his own ship before retiring and being accepted as Governor. All before the Age of forty.” His eyes studied the Judge carefully “And you yourself have quite the Career, College at sixteen, JAG internship at twenty-two, Judge at Twenty Eight.” He was clearly well informed despite only having been on the colony for a matter of hours “The last person I worked with credentials as impressive as yours was the Judge Advocate General”

She smiled and blushed prettily. He was very well informed. “Hard work certainly has its rewards. I thank you for the compliment.” She didn’t continue on to say how her family had created a driving need to leave New France as quickly as possible while having the means to support herself and her younger sibling. “I have a great deal of passion for the law and somehow that translated. I don’t think I am as prolific as the Star Fleet JAG, but I like to think eventually I will reach that level of intelligence, prestige and honor. For right now though, I set my sights a little lower and no less important. But what brings you to my door Monsieur Karlson?”

Rousseau, HotJ

Joseph raised himself in the seat at the question, as if it was a bit uncomfortable “Several reasons in fact.” He smiled again “First, of course, to say hello, a proper greeting makes all the difference. Then to talk to you about your private security.” He was curious what her reactions would be, she seemed tough but a home invasion was a hard thing to deal with. “As you may well know, the Security for members of the Cabinet falls under my purview. The failings of my predecessor in this area, as well as others, is a fault I intend to fix”

She was glad to hear this. The fact that her security had been so light and that she had had no personal security, likely enabled the goons to get in without too much trouble. Had she had a personal bodyguard, Dawson would not have had to intervene to save her life. Since that night, she had had two personal escorts, but nothing official. And pretty much anyone would have been a step up from the previous police captain who had been, at best, an incompetent and ill educated swine.

There was a spark in his eyes, he seemed disturbed by recent events. “At all times you will have two people on your immediate detail, a driver and a body-man. The drivers are expert pilots. You have a team of four drivers working on different shifts available at all hours of the day. Your body-man is your personal bodyguard that escorts you in all public areas. Lives in your house and is generally aware of all your comings and goings. Since these are people that will be working closely with you I will send you a list of trusted individuals to pick out of. “

Her eyebrow rose as she listened to the list of personnel assigned to her. It was quite more than she expected and certainly more than she had now. While she had expected to have some body guards, she had not expected one to live with her.

“As per tradition, your private Bodyguard will be women, many of which I have personally served with either in the Marines or in the private sector.” He smiled again “I will send you a list so you can choose whomever you wish to work with. During work hours your Hover-Car will be escorted by a single Police Cruiser. These are security precautions I’ve had in place since my first tenure as Police Commissioner” He raised his left hand and tapped several times on his wrist computer. Rousseau’s Computer beeped as she received files of potential Bodyguards and pilots. “Any questions about this topic before I move on to my last reason” He’d spoken very softly throughout is entire speech, perhaps a way to instil calm when discussing matters of personal security.

Commissioner Karlson

Astrid remained silent for a moment as she perused the list briefly. She sipped her tea and contemplated having someone live with her. The list was extensive and their qualifications were miles long. At least she had a selection and they were all well suited to the task. “Thank you for being so thorough in your handling of my security Commissioner. I shall select a few to interview for the positions within the next two days. I believe I can make time for that. It is a priority I didn’t realize was so high until my home was broken into. Will there be security at my home more than the two men who have 12 hour shift’s guarding the front gate?”

Rousseau, HotJ

Joseph chuckled slightly at her comment “Yes, quite more in fact” He grabbed a small circular object from his CPI and placed it on the Judges desk. After a moment of fiddling with his Wrist Computer a hologram appeared out of the small object on the desk, it formed into Rousseau’s house and lawn “There are three primary layers of security around your property.” He pointed to the driveway and the front gate “The front gate station will have two guards at all time for the foreseeable future, working eight-hour shifts, They will be in charge of letting people in and watching the outer perimeter.”

Joseph moved his hand and the outer part of the hologram faded away and the inner part grew in size “The second layer is the sensor heavy area, I’m going to be setting up a new Security facility in the Residential area that is charged with watching the sensor information, it creates a sensor bubble around your house that will detect anything larger than a microbe, then the video surveillance takes over. These are manned 24/7 and you have constant access to the records so you can modify how you wish for your surveillance to be, with moderation of course. Now with these new features in place and a changing of the guards, as they say, police response time will be lowered to two to four minutes at most at any time of the day”

Another motion of the Commissioners large hand took away the second perimeter and showed only the house itself and the pool area around it “Your sanctum sanctorum will be monitored by your private security force, not the general watchers. They’ll be setting up some extra security measures, similar to what I have in my house” His tone was calm and collected, this was serious stuff but he didn’t want her to worry too much “Sensors at every opening scans each individual who enters the house, taking a holographic image which you can review at any time you wish, there won’t be any video or audio surveillance anywhere in the house or the pool area unless you request it, privacy and all that. This is why I have the Holographic sensor equipment, it protects privacy and is on an internal system so it can’t be accessed from the outside so you can’t be monitored. There will be weekly security sweeps for any listening devices scheduled randomly at my behest”

Astrid leaned forward and looked at the little projection of her home. As he detailed the new security measures for her home, she let her imagination create them in her mind. The sensors would certainly come in handy. Considering all the trouble two goons caused, she was grateful for Karlson’s special attention to detail and her specific security needs. It was all very much a new part of her career, the needing of so much security. It would take getting used to, but Astrid wasn’t going to complain. She liked feeling safe and had learned almost the hard way that what she had in place was not nearly enough.

Joseph pressed a button on his CIP and turned of the Hologram. He’d somehow set up a presentation for a new security system in a freshly built house due to a very recent event even though he had been on the Planet less than two hours. The elder reached into his pocket and grabbed a small box and placed it on the table “A gift” He said smiling. When her honour opened the box she would see a Small silver Signet ring with the Crest of her Alma Mater engraved professionally on it “It was a slight rush job I know but it’ll work for now. You can have it placed on any jewellery or item of clothing you wear, be it a belt or watch” He sounded pleased “It’s your panic button, twist the top and press it down and your location will be broadcasted to every police scanner on the planet and you will have immediate emergency assistance.” He finally stopped to allow the Judge to respond.

Comissioner Karlson

She reached over and took the box, opening it. This reminded her of the panic button Dawson had let her use the night of the break in. The fact that the ring fit well on her right hand ring finger showed just how much work the Commissioner had done to prepare for this meeting. Finally she looked up at him and blushed a little in embarrassment. “This is beyond my best expectations Commissioner. I am incredibly impressed and honored that you would do so much to make sure I am safe while maintaining a mix of privacy with that safety.”

Joseph simply nodded with his smile.

Astrid sat back and swallowed hard. “It was a wake up call for me to have had the break in. My home has not felt safe since. I think these procedures and precautions should certainly help with that a great deal. I cannot thank you enough.”

ROusseau, Hotj

“A home isn’t a home unless you feel safe there.” He leaned forward “I read the situation report and the description given by a Mr Dawson. I know from personal experience that a home invasion such as this can awaken certain feelings of anxiety and paranoia, which is natural.” He said matter-of-factly “Now beyond these security precautions there are a number of martial arts that can be therapeutic as well as useful. You are welcome to join me and my wife during our regular training sessions” He took a moment to consider the Judge “you’re about the same size and build so adapting her style should be fairly simple” He looked at his wrist computer and back at Astrid “But of course the simplest self-defense training is teaching you to use a small Phaser, which can be a comfort.”

Commissioner Karlson.

Astrid’s brows rose visibly as she realized what Karlson was suggesting. Astrid had never been an exceptionally physical person. She ran regularly for a bit of cardio and to get herself away from her paperwork, but she had never really considered more than that. She was more than a little daunted by being examined in the way the Commissioner was sizing her up. She blushed a little. His suggestion was not a bad one by any means. Both the ability to defend herself physically from an attack and handle a weapon would be advantageous especially since someone obviously wanted to watch her for some nefarious purpose. Whatever purpose that was, she didn’t want to find out.

“Alright Commissioner. I should probably take up both martial arts and small phaser training. It is a prudent and wise suggestion. If you will leave the regular times and places I need to be with my assistant Sofi, she will see to my schedule.”

Rousseau, HotJ

Joseph smiled “Of course, but really anytime you’re free works. My wife is mostly doing some writing these days with the occasional mornings at Sacred Heart assisting if necessary. Ah” He suddenly stopped and put a large hand in his right jacket pocket “That reminds me, a small welcoming gift from her. She was very impressed by one of your early works, a dissertation on treaty law.” He took out a small sphere and a smaller circular device. The Sphere was an opaque silver orb. Joseph dropped the smaller device on the desk, it gave a small beep as it landed. He dropped the Orb over it and it stopped a few inches from the device, hovering silently. “It’s a Trill, well I guess we’d call it a gavel” He gazed at it awkwardly as if anticipating something that wasn’t happening “It’s used solely by the higher courts or at least it used to. It was a gift from the High Justice of the Trill Symcourt, I think he’s technically my uncle” The human pondered as the orbed glowed slightly, showing letters in Trill script finally appearing. He leaned in with a smile “There we go, that’s the stuff” He leaned back again with a satisfied grin “Neema thought it was an appropriate quote.” He said without reading it.

Commissioner Karlson

(OOC: So sorry I let this drop. Its been a god awful two months)

IC: Astrid was surprised that the new comissioner’s wife had read one of her dissertations. Amused, she leaned forward to look at the curious object that was in such a familiar shape. Any student of law history could have told you what it was. There were many versions of the object throughout history. The scrolling letters appeared across the surface, causing a gasp of surprise to come from the Judge’s mouth. Her smile was more than amused, it was filled with wonder. The script though, was a language with which she was not terribly familiar. She assumed it was Trill since that was the origin Joseph described. “I am afraid I am unfamiliar with Trill as a language. What does it say Commissioner?”
