Halai turned to Astrid. “Well, feel like another drink or did you want to call it a night also?” She knew the party would probably likely start to disperse now that the governor had left. “We could always head back to my place. Guaranteed to be quieter,” she said with a grin.

Michael was in the vehicle mentally listening to her. Hormonal? Was this another one of those weeks? Or was she…?

He slowly turned his gaze to her, his eyes meeting hers as he also glanced at her stomach as well. You’re pregnant? he asked, a hint of excitement in his mental voice.

Astrid turned her attention back to Halai and smiled. “A night cap of sorts sounds lovely.” She paused and looked around”, obviously a little anxious. “I am concerned though. We didn’t even get through dinner before the night fell apart. Where are our hosts? Should we leave before they return? I do not wish to be rude, but this evening has already been quite unorthodox and two of the main guests have already left.”

“It is an awkward situation. Saying goodbye would probably be the best and I’ve got a replicator at my place, so we won’t starve,” Halai replied.

It was at this moment that Stephen entered the room, Shari following close behind. Although she was putting up a brave face, she was clearly not as energetic as usual, leaving Stephen to be in control of the situation. The host himself was holding a bottle of wine in his hands, and approached the guests, “I apologize for my tardiness, there was an incident in the entryway and Shari along with Roze were informing me of what happened.” The maid herself had also entered the room, but was clearly not trying to draw attention to herself. Stephen glanced over to her before back to the guests, “If you wish to leave, I can have take home packages made up for you, and if not, I believe that we still have time for a quick supper.”

Astrid watched the hosts finally return to their party. They all looked somewhat disoriented. Whatever had happened had caused a great deal of turmoil. Astrid did not have to be telepathic to understand this. It was written on their faces. She automatically held out her glass for a refill of wine, wanting to give Stephen something to do while he regained a bit of his composure and offered take out bags of the dinner promised.

At this point, his face grew rather tired, “However, I feel that I must inform you that there was a strange person who came here tonight. He threatened my wife and caused an incident with another strange being that appeared. If you wish to go home knowing this, I don’t blame you.” He nodded towards Roze, “Roze will finish setting things up shortly, if you could inform me of your plans, that would be great.” Opening the bottle, he poured a glass and handed it to Shari, before turning to the others, “Feel free to have a drink before you decide, after all, I did keep you waiting for this long, I can stand to let myself wait a bit.”

Her expression was one of sympathy and kindness as she looked at her poor host. She sipped her glass of wine and turned to Halai who had offered her place for a more relaxed evening. She turned to Stephen. “Mr. Binns, your offer is sweet. I think however, that your family has had enough stress for the evening. I certainly would not wish to add to that. Even though I am sure the evening would turn out well for you are a good host, I believe it is best to give your household a reprieve. I cannot speak for the others, but I personally would enjoy a take home package so that I can enjoy the dinner without burdening your family further and look forward to trying this again very soon without an unexpected guest.”

Nicely done there, Miss Judge, Cosgrove thought to herself. it was a perfectly respectful and polite reply. “I agree with Astrid. don’t wish to impose any farther, but taking your delicious meal with us would be a great alternative option.”

~Halai Cosgrove

Astrid had been a judge for long enough to know when to play politic and when to be respectful. The Binns had been through something, though really, she could only guess at what. She smiled and nodded at Halai. They would take their takeout and enjoy some time at her home. A home could tell a lot about a person and Astrid was looking forward to finding out what Halai surrounded herself with.

Politely excusing herself after being given their food, Halai led Astrid out to where her bodyguard had her slider waiting. “It’ll only take a few minutes to get there,” Halai told Astrid as they settled in.
