After their discussion at the museum, Urg’tohn the Towering led the Inspector to the spaceport and to the Sons of House Duroc’s ship. Even with the much needed repairs being underway, the ship looked like the poster child for the term ‘death-trap’. But, without so much as a second look, Urg walked up the cargo ramp and entered the hold of the derelict Orion freighter.

Leading the Inspector into the ship, they found themselves it what was, or aspired to be years ago, the ship’s galley. A large table, discolored and covered with plates that had not seen a sonic cleaner in who knows how long, sat in the middle of the room. Taking a seat in the largest chair available, Urg gestured to the opposite chair and said “Sit. Here we can talk freely. And to show you I have nothing to hide, I am willing to answer any questions you have. Provided you do the same. And I will take it on your word that what we say here will not leave this ship in an form. Agreed, half-breed?” The last phrase was delivered not as an insult as one might have expected from a Klingon, but rather as statement of fact and the acknowledgement that Urg didn’t really know what Pabgolin was.

Urg’tohn the Dedicated

Detective Chief Inspector Pangolin looked curiously around the galley before sitting where he was offered. As he sat down he didn’t seem to mind the overall filthiness. He straightened his red tie as he listened to the Klingon intently. “Those seem fair terms, I agree. House Juuv clearly doesn’t care much about the artefact, otherwise, they’d never loan it to a Federation Museum on a small colony such as this. They clearly have specific issues with your involvement. Why is that, and not the whole they are cowards against your holy rites bit, What specifically is their issue.”

Urg’tohn smiled and said “House Juuv is a Nobel House. They have a seat on the Council. They have land, ships, money, power, influence. Their House has been a fixture of Klingon politics and history for over a thousand years.” and he leaned forward and looked Pangolin directly in the eyes. “And it is all built on lies. Tell me, Inspector… what do you know of Klingon legends? Of past glories and history? I am not stalling you. I need to know where to begin.” Urg’s voice was not as it typically was. Oh, he still held the looked of a crazed and unstable machine of chaos in his eyes, that seemed to quite legitimate. But something in his voice was… clam. Straightforward. And completely assured of it’s truth and veracity.

Urg’tohn, Son of House Duroc.

“Why talk to this unbeliever?” K’vorth said as he came into the galley, wiping his hands on some kind of cooking apron it looked like with hands seemingly covered in some kind of grease. He had obviously taken a moment to fix something, somewhere, on the ship before following them. “He is just as unlikely to believe where Juuv got their wealth from, and just how much they owe should their treachery be proven.”

Urg looked his brother and said “This one is different. He is… perceptive. And he saw the Relic move at the Builder’s will. He knows something is happening. He should know what that is before Juuv’s assassin’s arrive. At least then, he can be better prepared to defend the innocents on this rock. As you and I both know from experience, Brother-Mine…” and he turned and looked at Pangolin, “… they will not hesitate to kill anyone who they think is in their way. They have done it before. They will not hesitate to do so again.” and he leaned forward and locked Pangolin with a stare. “Last time, it was a transport of religious refugees. They thought we were on board. Blew it up during takeoff. Over a hundred dead, many children.” and he leaned back. “They have no honor, Inspector. They are well aware of the knowledge we possess. And they know we are close to proving it. They are scared cowards, targs backed into a corner. And they will lash out at anyone or anything they have to in order to keep their falsehood alive. So again, I ask you… what do you know of our people’s legends?”

Bump for Pangolin

The stone-faced Detective took a moment before answering “No more than the average Federation Citizen, I’m familiar with the concepts of Sto-vo-kor, Kahless the Unforgettable and his duel with Molor and the founding of the Empire, a few Poems and such we study in school. Most of what I know I learned from being embedded with Klingon Soldiers during the War. But if you intend to inform me of anything please explain in the same manner as you would a young child” He said in full seriousness.

DCI Pangolin

Urg nodded once. “Then I will tell you of Kvaar’ton The Builder. Of his final battle, and of the treachery that brought him down. And I will tell you of the founding of House Duroc, built on the shoulders and in the memory of the mighty Kvaar’ton, The Builder whom my brothers and I serve and honor. The one we will restore to glory.” And he leaned back and began to tell Pangolin the story. https://www.star-fleet.com/core/stf6/oedv/notes/5529/

Once he had finished, Urg’tohn lowered his head in reverence for a few moments. He then looked up, a righteous fire burning low but powerful in his eyes. “The dagger from the legend still exists. Kvaar’ton’s horn. Used by Juuv to slay him, recovered and held by Duroc. Given to the The One That Lived. It is here. And Kvaar’ton has shown us that it holds the truth of House Juuv’s treason; and will bring House Duroc back to it’s rightful place in Klingon history. .. and restore Kvaar’ton back his rightful place by the side of Kahless. This we will do, Inspector, when we find the relic we seek.”

“But… Juuv will try to stop us. They will try to find the dagger and destroy it before we use it to destroy them. As you know, their agents are coming. And they will not stop until we are dead and the relic destroyed. And they will kill anyone who tries to prevent that.” and he cocked his head to the side and looked intently at Pangolin. “Contrary to what you may think of us, the Sons of House Duroc do not believe in the destruction of innocents. There is no honor to be gained in taking the lives of those who pose no threat to you. And that is where we differ from Juuv.” and he spit on the floor. “They live in fear, see blades in the dark where there are only shadow. This is what living a lie does to you. And their paranoia is growing the closer we get to the relic. They will lash out… and The Builder help any who are caught in that.”

Urg’tohn, Son of the Builder

Pangolin had been still for the duration of the story, no expression betraying whatever it was he thought of it. He took a moment to consider his next words. “It would seem that fortune stands by your side Klingon. My boss has a vested interest in the comings and goings of the Klingon Empire and its great houses. There is a limit to how many regular forces your enemies can bring across the border, but I’ve faced similar foes before. I wouldn’t be surprised if they were to employ local cutthroats to assist in their efforts.” He leaned back in his chair, throwing on leg over the other as he continued his train of thought “Should they act in the open we can take them down with relative ease and I suspect you three won’t have any issues with discreetly handling any shadows they try to cast over you. I have the authority to say that Commissioner Karlson will use his political clout to cover you against the Juv publically to buy you time to finish what needs to be finished. As I understand it he’s interested in seeing what happens.” The Mixed Detective put his hands in his coat pockets as he looked around the room absentmindedly “But understand that if any Civilians die because of either them or you he will give the order for the apprehension of all Klingons involved.” His gaze turned to the Klingon once more “This is more a threat to the Juuv than it is to you and your brothers, as far as I’m concerned you’ve earned at least that much. We’re rather hoping that Karlsons reputation as WamwI’ of Warriors is sufficient to temper their bloodlust.”

DCI Pangolin

“Reputation means nothing to the Juuv” K’vorth replied, taking a seat at the table from where he had stood during his brothers story. “Neither does honor. They fear the loss of everything they have taken, and that makes them dangerous and capable of the unexpected. You need to understand the danger. Arresting them, us, will change nothing aside from making them more dangerous and giving them another target. Your city. Arrest them, and they will see your people as aiding us, even if we are arrested with them. That will only see the Juuv in prison with us dead, and a lot more civilians dead from the insane need they have to secure their holdings from the truth.”

K’vorth looked at his brother and sneered in disgust, “The Juuv will not work in the open, not until they have no other response. They have a fleet of ships, our ships by right, and if they feel the need they will not hesitate to open fire with that fleet and destroy this city to keep their secrets. They have done it before Brother, you know this.” He looked between the two, “We have no desire for civilians to die, but the relic is here. And the Juuv likely already looking.”

K’vorth, Son of the House of Duroc

There was a pregnant pause once more and Pangolin smiled slightly “I didn’t say ‘arrest’ K’vorth, I said apprehend. And that comes only if they harm civilians. And I don’t care how powerful they think they are destroying a Federation Colony I can promise you it isn’t going to happen. There are contingencies being put in place for every move they can make. We won’t officially intervene don’t worry about that, we don’t like you three enough to go to war with a Klingon Great House, but we’ll give you time to do what you need.”

DCI Pangolin

Urg smiled, a rictus grin sweeping his face. “My brothers and I appreciate your understanding, Inspector. And know this. House Duroc… we… have honor the depths of which no Juuv could begin to fathom. We will die before we allow an innocent to be killed. The Builder expects nothing less from his faithful.” and he stood and went to a large cabinet, opened it, retrieved three goblets and filled them from a barrel of Blood Wine, and carried them to the table. Setting one down in front of each person, he raised his glass to Pangolin and his brother. “We drink to seal our bond. House Duroc will stand against House Juuv and their lackeys. We will keep harm from those who have no part in our quest. You, Inspector, will ensure that we have the opportunity to prove our claim. This is our pact.”

Urg’tohn, Son of House Duroc

Pangolin silently took the cup with a grim smile and raised it “So it is”
