Setting: A darkened bedroom: Earth
Doris, who had mere hours earlier, gone to bed alone and dressed in her nightie, woke with a start and a scream. She was no longer alone, and she no longer was dressed in her nightie.

In fact a man was with her, and her state of undress and his state of undress made her realise what had happened.

“Do not be afraid, beautiful Doris of Earth, for I have picked you as my mate, lowly you, wearer of hatpins, possessor of the ability to spread rumours at a rate faster than a galaxy class starship at warp 9.999 and more protective of your boss’s diary than a horta whose young have been threatened or removed from her care,” the man said, “you should be thankful for the opportunity I am giving you to have the fruit of my loins. Look at what I have to offer and tell me good ol’ George can offer anything like this.”

She glanced at him up and down, taking in his facial features - the piercing blue eyes, the chiselled jaw line, the wavey golden shoulder length hair, the slight indication of stubble on his chin and cheeks, then down to his torso, the muscular shoulders and arms, the well toned upper torso and six pack abs, the strong, muscular thighs and upper legs, the well developed pair of … kneecaps (where did you think I was going? This is PG 13+, folks, and Oed V, not after dark in discord), and his lower legs and feet. He turned and she blushed an even deeper red as his buttocks were on display, but her eyes suddenly went to the clothes on the floor.

“You … are … Starfleet?” She gasped seeing the black and mustard on the ground.

“I am Starfleet,” he replied, though it seemed to be framed as a question as opposed to anything else. He snapped his fingers and suddenly he was clothed again.

There was banging on the door, and the voice of George Easter floated in, “Doris? You all right?” The concern on his voice was easy to pick out.

Doris’ visitor left in what she knew was a transporter beam of some kind. Then the door opened, well smashed would be more a more appropriate description. And George: chubby, out of shape George; was there, dressed in his boxers, and Doris, love handles and all, dressed in naught but her birthday suit, collapsed in his arms.

“I had a visitor, an unwanted visitor. I think I am pregnant, George,” and she began crying. George patted her on the head, and said, “well, I am here for you, I won’t abandon you or the child.”

Charles, of course, stumbled into the scene at this stage and of course the youth only heard George’s reply and misinterpretted what had happened. He stared, slack jawed, at both Doris and George.

“You two are having a baby? Why smash the door?” Before a response was made, he left the scene … to post about his boss, George Easter having a child with his PA, Doris on SpaceFace.

… And THAT is how Doris became pregnant and how the rumours began that George Easter was the father!

  • Nameless male Starfleet Officer(?)

Of course an office on Earth in the 24th Century is as much as a rumour mill, if not more of a rumour mill than an office on Earth in the 21st Century. Thanks to Charles’ SpaceFace post, what Charles’ mates at school told their parents who told their friends who told their mother’s dressmaker’s, cousin’s hairdresser’s cat herding nephew who happened to be brother in law of Ken Easter Junior (current owner of the family business) got garbled into George Easter and his secretary Doris were having a secret love tryst with members of the Vissian species, apparently there were multiple outcomes possible according to the story that Ken Easter Junior’s brother-in-law told Ken when they were engaged in a game of golf at St Andrews on Earth.

“My brother did WHAT?” exploded Ken, causing a flock of birds to rise into the air in a chorus of squawks and other cries of protest and alarm, and a golfer at a nearby hole to miss a putt from 5 cm away from the hole.

His brother-in-law repeated the story, though this time, a betazoid woman of middle years was also in the story. Ken abruptly called an end to the game of golf, called his private secretary and told her to have his younger brother, George in his office waiting for him when he arrived back there.

George, who had spent the day trying to console Doris, and work out why Charles was avoiding him, was surprised to get the summons to meet with his brother. He was even more surprised to see Ken looking steamed when he arrived and curtly told him to come into his office.

No sooner than the door was shut behind them, but Ken began to explore the full extent of his vocabulary in Federation common. After he reached the end of it, he began to branch out into other languages, the guttural sounds of Klingon, the raspy Cardassian, the nasally high pitched sounds of the Ferengi language and the thickly accented Betazoid got a guernsey, as well as some languages George could only guess at. George gathered that he must have done something, something ‘disgraceful and shameful to the Easter name and company’, but George had no idea what it was, and he decided to let his brother get it out of his system.

Gradually, slowly Ken calmed down, and George took the opportunity to get them both a synthenale from the office replicator.

“Ken, I honestly don’t know what you’re so upset about,” George said to his older brother, once the synthenale began to work its magic.

“Ron heard that you and you PA of yours, Doris, isn’t it?” A nod from George and so Ken continued, “you and Doris are having a romance on company time and with company resources, that you got Doris pregnant and that some how three members of the Vissian species (one of each gender) as well as a Betazoid woman of advanced years were involved. It is highly inappropriate … you fool, what were you thinking?”

“We are doing … WHAT?” George asked, and he explored the extent of his language as he paced around the office, shaking his arms. With effort, he calmed himself down enough to form a coherent sentence.

“I can assure you there is NOTHING going on between and Doris, and I’ve never even seen a Vissian, let alone had any kind of interaction with them,” George said, returning to his seat as he sipped at his synthonale.

“So you mean that Doris not pregnant, that you and she did not …” Ken asked.

“Doris and I am not an item. I have not had sex with her, I do not have those sorts of feelings for her, she is a competent PA, but beyond our professional working relationship and our limited social interactions, we have no real contact,” George replied, “but there was something that happened last night.” And George proceeded to tell his brother about the screaming from Doris and his arrival on the scene and then the arrival of Charles, his work experience student. George cut off suddenly, and then said, “you can access SpaceFace from here?” off his brother’s nod, George went and brought up the teen’s SpaceFace profile and posts and he spoke of the events of the past night to those who followed him. A few of them were interested in a description of Doris beyond ‘she wasn’t wearing anything’, but he didn’t go any further than that.

“So where do we go from here?” George asked his brother.

You have to get that sorted, George,” Ken replied, “I have to prepare in the event that news on this gets out. Deal with it, please, this could be embarrassing for the business. I am sorry, George, but that’s all the time I’ve got for this. Deal with it, please.”

Ken showed his younger brother to the door of his office, and half pushed him out the door. The door was shut after him. George looked at the door, and mouthed to the closed door, “but what about Doris? Isn’t this more embarrassing for her?”

“Congratulations, I can confirm you are pregnant,” the Doctor said to Doris. On hearing the news, she burst into tears.

“There are numerous options if you don’t want the baby,” the Doctor added.

She wiped her eyes, and said, “no, I want the baby, I just thought it would be with someone I loved, that’s all. Not a random Starfleet officer.”

The Doctor’s eyes opened wide, “I see? A Starfleet officer? Do you know the officer’s name?”

“No.”

“His ship?”

“No.”

“Are you going to see him again?”

“I don’t think so.”

“I don’t mean to judge, Doris, but …”

“Doctor, I didn’t know him. I went to bed in my nightie, I locked my door. I woke up, undressed, he was on me, I screamed, he picked up his clothes and was transported out. My boss came to the door and knocked the door down. I wasn’t looking to start a family, but it looks like I am going to. I hope I am good at it. George has said he’ll help me. He’s a great man, not judging me, just wanting to help me.”

“I … see,” the doctor replied, but the doctor’s expression and voice suggested a lack of understanding, “you will need to return for regular checkups, the nurses will see that for you.”

“Thanks doc,” Doris replied and left the office. The doctor updated Doris’ file with the visit, including her description of the encounter.

George returned to his office, and saw Charles attempt to make himself scarce.

“Charles, my office, NOW,” George said, loudly and firmly. Charles’ shoulders drooped as he did what George said.

Once they entered the office, George pointed to a chair in the room, and said “Sit. Don’t say a word, just sit and listen.”

George crossed to the console on his desk, pushed a few buttons and SpaceFace was projected onto the blank wall in his office. George pulled up the page about Charles, and the teen seemed to shrink back into his chair.

“My brother, our boss, heard from the brother of his wife that Doris and I were having an affair and that it included members of different species in some kind of weird … encounter. He was ballistic and was ready to fire me, which would mean you’d be back at that school … no field work, no deliveries, just the school. What possessed you to say such a thing to your friends?”

“You were hugging her. You said you’d help her to look after the baby,” Charles said, “I thought …”

“That’s the thing, Charles, you didn’t think,” George said, “in any case, it isn’t your information to share. It isn’t my information to share. It is Doris’ information to share. You’ve made a bad decision. You’ve shown a lack of judgement. We can’t have that in our work, Charles, we have to make good decisions, give good advice, and keep confidences.”

“I’m sorry, Mr Easter,” Charles said, looking downcast, “I didn’t mean to cause trouble for you or for Doris. I understand if you don’t want me to work for you any more and if you can’t trust me.”

“I am disappointed in your poor judgement, Charles, but this isn’t going to be end of you working with me. We all make mistakes, the important thing is, we learn from them and we try not to make them again. Yes, I was hugging Doris. She had a shock in waking to find a naked man on top of her. Yes, I did say I’d look after her and her child. With what you know of me, do you think I would leave Doris to fend for herself with her new child?” George said, and then paused for a few moments.

Charles shook his head and said “No, you wouldn’t. You’re too nice a man to do something like that, Mr Easter.”

“Thank you, Charles,” George said, “Doris is my PA and together with you is the closest thing I have to a family of my own beyond my siblings, my parents and my nieces and nephews. I care for both of you deeply, and that’s why I was so disappointed with your actions.”

“I am so sorry, Sir,” Charles replied, “it won’t happen again. I too care for you … and for Doris.” Charles blushed at that, and George coughed and used it and his hand to cover a grin … it seemed that young Charles may have had a slight crush on Doris …

Setting: Deep Space 15: Infirmary
George and Charles sat in the waiting room while Doris was being examined by one of the Doctors in the prenatal ward of the infirmary. After the initial events following Doris’ pregnancy, things had been difficult between George and Charles, but they had warmed significantly shortly after when George talked it through with the boy and the misunderstandings were clarified. Actually, the three of them didn’t mind the misunderstanding so much now. People always assumed that George and Doris were the parents and that George was a younger brother or perhaps a nephew of either George or Doris and while they sometimes tried to correct the misunderstandings, they more often simply let it stand and laughed about it later.

Such was the case when they arrived on Deep Space 15. Coming through customs, they were waylaid by a Zakdorm who was officious, pushy and fastidious in the extreme. He couldn’t accept they were not family, and queried why they all had different surnames. No answers were good enough for him, and it seemed that an incident was about to commence when the CO of the station came down to intervene and let George, Charles and Doris through, after telling the Zakdorn that he’d be transferred from the front room of dealing with arrivals and departures to the back room analysis where his talents would be put to better use. The CO then proceeded to invite George, Charles and Doris to stay in VIP quarters on the station in an effort to make up for the incident involving the Zakdorn. Then, he insisted that they be the personal guests of himself and his wife while they were on the station. His wife, a matronly Betazoid of middle years, took Doris under her wing and ensured that she understood the psychological, physical and emotional changes that she and her body were going through. On a more practical level, she ensured that Doris had the best medical care possible while on the station.

A member of the station’s medical staff came out and asked, “could Doris’ husband please come in?”

“She doesn’t have a husband, I don’t think,” George said, “and before you ask for the father of her baby, I’m not that either,” then at a touch from Charles, said, “but I am her boss and friend … and I care for her. I’m the one you want, I think.”

“I’ll … stay out here,” Charles said.

George went in for a talk with the medical staff attending to Doris and her needs and Charles was left out in the waiting room, waiting …

Setting: Magellan Station, Infinite Fleet

“The medical supplies are all accounted for and delivered into the station’s infirmary, George,” Charles reported entering the small office of Easter Transport on the station, “and the CMO sends thanks for the supplies’ safe delivery.”

George looked up from his padd, and nodded to the youth before returning his gaze to the shipping manifests in front of him.

“Charles,” he said after a moment’s silence, “I need you to review the time required to make the deliveries between New Romulus, Magellan Station and the supply depots along the Klingon and Romulan borders. We need to make a minimum saving of 5% in total time to make the deliveries on time to enable the Romulans to continue to develop their society and meet their own needs. I trust you’ll be able to do it. Consider all options, Charles.”

“Yes, Sir,” Charles replied, “no problem, I’ll find those savings for you.”

Charles sat in another chair and pulled up the necessary file onto the monitor in front of that chair. He began to tap at the monitor, bringing up maps, figures and supply manifests. George pondered the youth before nodding, Charles would do, he would more than do. He was still young and he would make mistakes from time to time, but that was the only way he would learn what to and what not to do. The door into the rest of the Easter offices opened, and out walked Doris, or something as close to a walk as a woman in her condition could achieve. Charles looked up at her, smiled briefly and returned to his work.

George walked over to her, and asked, “how are you, Doris? Can I get you anything?”

“I am doing well for a pregnant woman,” she replied, stroking her stomach, “it is time for my next appointment with a doctor, could you …”

“take you to the infirmary,” George said, “of course. Are you sure you should be walking to the infirmary? Shouldn’t I be getting a doctor to you? You should be keeping off your feet, shouldn’t you? Here, let me …”

He grabbed her by the elbow and tried to pull her towards a couch in the room, “couch, nice couch, why don’t you sit down, Doris? Can I get you anything? Tea? Coffee? Cheesecake? A salad?”

“I … am … pregnant … George … not … invalid,” Doris said slowly and clearly. She also sounded cross as she continued to speak, “don’t pull on me like that, I can walk and I do not need or want food or drink.”

“Nice couch, why don’t you lie down, Doris,” George said, “couch, nice couch” he continued as he patted the couch.

“Very well, George, I will sit on the couch,” Doris said, and she proceeded to do so.

“Here’s a blanket to keep you and your baby warm,” George said as he approached her with a blanket, he tried to cover her with it, but proceeded to fall on top of her instead.

“Get off me you oaf,” Doris said, and at that point the door to the office opened and in walked a member of the station’s medical staff.

“What is going on here?” the doctor asked.

“Doris … baby … blanket … rest,” George said, “baby.”

“It is too early for Doris to be resting, George,” the doctor said, “she needs to be up and walking around.”

“Doris … baby … nice couch,” George replied.

“I see,” the doctor said, “you’re one of those.” Turning to Charles, the doctor added, “why don’t you take Mr Easter to the gym available for civilian use.” The doctor gave instructions and Charles said, “come with me, George.”

The youth led the older man out of the Easter offices and into the station proper. Back in the office, the doctor turned to Doris, “that was the first time I’ve experienced that from someone who isn’t the father of the child, dear. If you can get through that from him, and believe me, it’ll get worse, he’s definitely a keeper for you. Now, let’s run these tests. How have you been sleeping?” The doctor took out a medical tricorder and began to run it over Doris.

“Been sleeping well mostly, sometimes though it feels as though the baby is punching and kicking at the same time in there,” Doris replied, “seems the baby will be healthy when born.”

“What do you mean baby?” the Doctor said, “the scans show babies, Doris, you’re having triplets.”

“Triplets?” Doris replied, “I am having triplets … how will George cope with that?”

“Just don’t tell him, don’t lie, but don’t confirm the triplets to him until after they’re born” the doctor suggested with a gentle smile.

“Thank you Doctor,” Doris answered, “I will do that.”

The doctor nodded, checked the results of the scans, and said, “you and the babies are all doing well. Developmental guidelines in prenatal health care are all being met. And you should go full term.”

Doris smiled to the doctor, and once again said her thanks even as the doctor was exiting the office.

They had returned to Oed V following their brief break to a nearby holiday planet. On the planet, Charles spent time on the beach working on his tan, his swimming, his surfing, his setting and his spiking. By the end of the two week period, he was quite adept at beach volleyball, and he looked oh so good in budgie smugglers.

George went cycling and hiking most days and spent his evenings watching classic cricket matches played by the Australian Cricket Team in late 20th and early 21st century Earth history. Though he avoided the years of 2018 and 2019 - too painful for him. He cheered when Border and then Steve Waugh and in time Ricky Ponting scored 100s and applauded as Brett Lee sent down thunderbolts and the line and length of Glenn McGrath terrified batsmen of many nations, and the spin of Tim May, Stuart McGill and Shane Warne bamboozled opposing batsmen and he watched in awe of the footage of Don Bradman as he reached his average of just under 100.

Doris spent her days between the onsite spa studio and a lounger where she read holonovels and holomags. She spent her night resting in her bedroom on the massive bed that was given for her own private use.

But now they were back on Oed V and safely through customs and on their way via a government appointed vehicle to the accommodation that came with the role of Head of Operations and Construction on the Colony. They were in the general vicinity of the Sacred Heart Hospital, when Doris gripped hold of George and Charles tightly and began to scream.

“Hospital!”

George looked at her and then at Charles, his eyes wide opened, “you mean …”

“Yes, that thing that happened 9 months ago, it is happening now.” Doris snapped at him, “driver, hospital NOW!”

The driver was a betazed and so she picked up the emotions of her passengers, the blind panic of George, the wonder of Charles, the happiness of Doris, and the fluid unformed thoughts of the three minds inside of Doris.

The driver didn’t say a thing, but she did take a left then a right and pulled into the emergency bay at the Sacred Heart Hospital.

Hospital orderlies were on hand to load Doris onto a bed and rush her through to a room where she could give birth, leaving George and Charles behind and looking at each other.

“The father can go in and join her,” a nurse said, looking from George to Charles and back again.

“I’m her boss, and he’s an intern. Neither of us are the father,” George said.

“In that case, you’ll need to wait out here,” the nurse said, “when is the father …”

“We don’t know the father,” George said, then he looked dumbfounded.

“George has been taking good care of Doris, Nurse,” Charles said, “he is kind of like a husband to her. He’s been really good, when a Starfleet officer got her pregnant and then left in the middle of a night back on Earth.”

“Oh, well, there is a viewing room, you can watch from, if you want,” the Nurse replied.

“We’ll do it,” Charles said, “she’s been there for us, and so we should be there for her. Come on, George.”

Charles led George as they followed the Nurse into the hospital wards.

Charles led George, almost guided him by the hand as they followed the Nurse, who followed the orderlies and Doris. It almost seemed like a conga line, Charles thought to himself, as he looked at George. some men, it seemed, just weren’t ready for the birthing process, Charles thought to himself. And it appeared that George was chief among such men.

Charles knew the mechanics … the basic mechanics … the couple lay down together in a bed, then they try for baby by pulling the quilt cover over their head, then they did something under the covers which apparently involved a lot of rolling around, then love hearts fell to the floor around the bed and a nursery rhyme played. Then the couple lie in their pjs on top of the bed, looking satisfied with each other.

Then nine months passed during which time the lady got fatter and fatter and cranky and wanted all kinds of weird foods before the lady started screaming and all others nearby stopped what they were doing and went into a ‘PANIC, she’s having a baby dance’ in perfect unison with each other, and then the mother and the father of the baby went to the hospital together, the mother spun, and came out carrying a baby or babies wrapped in a pink cloth for a girl and a blue cloth for a boy. Then they just cried for a bit, and you needed to feed, burp, change nappies and clean them. That was how Charles believed that babies were born.

The interesting thing in the entire process was the fact that the father of the baby would come to the hospital where the mother would be. So, if he kept an eye out, he was certain he’d see an adult male in a Starfleet uniform come into the hospital and THAT would be the father! Of course, he supposed there was always the chance the father could be dead, and so he thought that meant that Colin Grimm would have to agree to release the dead father’s ghost to come to the hospital.

There was a commotion outside, and Charles looked out … A group of hospital staff were bringing in a human man, with a concerned looking Klingon male and Cardassian female alongside him.

“Dash was standing, then he collapsed,” the Klingon was saying to the hospital staff who were with them, “he clutched at his chest, will he be alright?”

“We are uncertain, Sir,” one of the staff were saying, we’ll get him in for observation and then one of the Doctors will tend to him. Lieutenant Jamison will be in the best of hands, though.”

=M= Emergency to Dr … =M= another staff member said, and Charles refocused back on George. The man still seemed to be shellshocked about what was going on in the room beyond them.

Lieutenant Dashel Jamison Charles thought to himself as he turned his attention back to the room in which Doris was going to be spinning shortly. … he MUST be the father.

“Has she started spinning yet, George?” Charles asked, “after the spin, there are sparkles and the baby appears, doesn’t it?”

“Spin? Sparkles?” George muttered, “what do you mean?”

“You know, the baby, Doris’ baby,” Charles said, “I know she spins first and then the sparkles and then the baby.”

George looked at the adolescent and sighed, “not exactly, why don’t you wait here and see what happens. Spin and sparkles, indeed. You make this sound like an old fashioned dishwasher, boy.”
