“Before I learned this, I was subtly coerced by the emotions of others, led to take actions I might not have naturally on my own. I’ll never truly know back then what was my own true needs and desires versus those of the people around me, especially those I had deep attachment too. But now, I have done the work to learn how to shield myself and selectively allow or disallow the mirror to function. So long as I am in tune, I am protected.”

If Akem had eyebrows, they would have raised as he nodded with an understanding smile. “Quite fascinating!”

“And yet, that’s not all,” Halai said with a slight laugh, her serenity once again shining as though her entire being were backlit. “There is a tangible… instinct, if you will. The Clerics all it the ‘korsiolo’, and it guides me. It provides feedback of sorts that functions in conjunction with the mirror. Though… that being said, it is often a distinct thing. It has its own sort of energy and I can feel it. Sometimes it makes its opinion clear by creating a sense of warmth and light within me, or other times it remains annoyingly silent.” What would he make of this all? Would he think her mentally unstable? Billie had a hard time understanding it all at first, but she had loved Halai and so it became something that made sense. Akem didn’t have the personal history with her to have that sort of belief. Or did he? Would his own sense of everything show him that she wasn’t making this up? That it was real and tangible? “I could show you,” she blurted out after a moment, as if worried that he’d run away laughing.

Akem’s grin broadened. “If you are concerned that I will not understand, do realize that I can accept what you say to be true. I am intrigued to see it, though how would you propose we do that?” he asked curiously. There were still things he could share about his mental abilities, but he had not actually tried it with a non-deltan. He did not voice it though. He merely expressed great curiosity and trust with Halai, though there were certainly undertones of attraction in the mix as well. And why shouldn’t there be? He relished the time they were sharing inwardly as he waited to hear her reply.

Halai exhaled as she felt a bit of relief flow through her. She wasn’t entirely sure why, but it felt vitally important that he accept what she said. Maybe it was because they were kindreds in a way, but maybe it was because aside from the distinct feelings he projected, she was deeply drawn to him and not having that acceptance would have been instant rejection, akin to a slap to the face.

“It’s pretty simple. I need to physically touch your body, though the easiest way is with my hands on your face. I think because you’re psi-positive too, your mind will be far more open. So far I’ve only ever done with with someone who wasn’t psi-positive, but whom I shared a deep emotional connection with,” Halai said softly, even as her heart thudded in her chest.

Without saying a word, Akem looked to her hands and lightly put his own on the palms of her own. After a moment, he pulled her hands to his bald head, placing each hand on either side of his face letting her fingers reach up and around the back of his head. His eyes fixated on her own as he curiously waited. Though to be fair, her visage would hold him there for however long she allowed.

Her breath quickened more out of uncertainty for what she was about to do rather than their proximity, though Halai couldn’t deny the attraction and chemistry between them. A part of her wondered if it was just his energy that was playing upon her, but the rest of her knew instinctually that she was not being manipulated here. Drawing her hands along his smooth skin towards her, she cupped his jaw gently before moving her thumbs to caress his cheeks. In her gold-ringed eyes, Halai, there was trepidation but also trust.

Closing her eyes, Halai shifted her breath to be slow and deeply filling. She continued breathing like that for a moment.

“Okay, I’m ready. Stay relaxed, it’ll make this easier,” she said. Reaching deeply within, Halai navigated through the extraneous thoughts and feelings to the source of the warmth, of the light. For Akem, it would likely be experienced as a wash of light that flowed over him and left a trail of tingling warmth through him. This he would know instinctually was the korsiolo she had spoken of, and it seemed to have its own sense of knowing that Halai was tapped in to.

Exploring more, Cosgrove allowed him to experience what she did, that her consciousness had barriers, like being in a room with transparent walls. With an immense amount of concentration, she could turn the walls and he would, presumably, understand that the walls were the mirrors, that someone on the outside would see themselves reflected back, but that the person there would project through the walls to Halai herself. That it took a great deal of self-awareness to maintain the boundaries between herself and others would be an understatement.

But within the room itself was a safe place where anything was possible, and sharing it now with Akem was a deeper sort of intimacy than any physical act.

Akem did indeed stay relaxed as he observed in awe the things revealed to him by Halai. To be able to see things from her viewpoint…was simply a one of a kind experience. People in general typically built walls to people in a similar way that Halai already had. Being a deltan gave him the advantage of seeing through the walls. But this was different. The walls here were made to reflect rather than stop someone from advancing forth. To be in behind the reflection made it a very special experience for him.

Externally, he gingerly put his hands slowly to Halai’s face as well. It was light and gentle. “An extraordinary ability! Yet I can’t help but wonder how many know the true you? I imagine you must find yourself feeling lonely sometimes?” he inquired, his eyes completely focused on her as he continued viewing things from her point of view.
