Her breath quickened more out of uncertainty for what she was about to do rather than their proximity, though Halai couldn’t deny the attraction and chemistry between them. A part of her wondered if it was just his energy that was playing upon her, but the rest of her knew instinctually that she was not being manipulated here. Drawing her hands along his smooth skin towards her, she cupped his jaw gently before moving her thumbs to caress his cheeks. In her gold-ringed eyes, Halai, there was trepidation but also trust.

Closing her eyes, Halai shifted her breath to be slow and deeply filling. She continued breathing like that for a moment.

“Okay, I’m ready. Stay relaxed, it’ll make this easier,” she said. Reaching deeply within, Halai navigated through the extraneous thoughts and feelings to the source of the warmth, of the light. For Akem, it would likely be experienced as a wash of light that flowed over him and left a trail of tingling warmth through him. This he would know instinctually was the korsiolo she had spoken of, and it seemed to have its own sense of knowing that Halai was tapped in to.

Exploring more, Cosgrove allowed him to experience what she did, that her consciousness had barriers, like being in a room with transparent walls. With an immense amount of concentration, she could turn the walls and he would, presumably, understand that the walls were the mirrors, that someone on the outside would see themselves reflected back, but that the person there would project through the walls to Halai herself. That it took a great deal of self-awareness to maintain the boundaries between herself and others would be an understatement.

But within the room itself was a safe place where anything was possible, and sharing it now with Akem was a deeper sort of intimacy than any physical act.

Akem did indeed stay relaxed as he observed in awe the things revealed to him by Halai. To be able to see things from her viewpoint…was simply a one of a kind experience. People in general typically built walls to people in a similar way that Halai already had. Being a deltan gave him the advantage of seeing through the walls. But this was different. The walls here were made to reflect rather than stop someone from advancing forth. To be in behind the reflection made it a very special experience for him.

Externally, he gingerly put his hands slowly to Halai’s face as well. It was light and gentle. “An extraordinary ability! Yet I can’t help but wonder how many know the true you? I imagine you must find yourself feeling lonely sometimes?” he inquired, his eyes completely focused on her as he continued viewing things from her point of view.

His hands on her skin had drawn her attention and while it would have normally made her push him away and cease her efforts, his own energy helped buoy Halai for awhile longer. Serenity filled her gold-ringed eyes until he spoke. then it was all there. The pain, the loneliness, the inescapable desire- all etched deeply and reverberating throughout her. “Only one,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper. “And we can no longer be together, perhaps never again.” She said only one, but she also meant until now. How could she ever risk sharing herself openly in this way? It certainly wasn’t meant for the casual acquaintance, but even others had to pass through certain unconscious tests before she could even consider it. It was a true matter of life and death, even if he didn’t understand the reasons for it.

“And why is that?” inquired Akem in all sincerity. There was concern and yet a feeling tenderness to him. Whatever had caused the only other person to know her this well to leave must have been drastic. His hands remained where they were, radiating not only peace, but the subtle attraction he felt towards her. Akem was not one to hide it.

With her barriers down at the moment, Halai knew she was taking a risk keeping herself open, that the definition between Akem and herself could get muddled. But at the same time, her korsiolo seemed to be monitoring this, so as she leaned her face slightly more into his touch, it flared brightly as if to say, Yes, it’s okay for to delve deeply here. I’ll protect you. And it was true. her *korsiolo was as much a defence force as it was an instinct.

“For reasons I’m not fully able to share. But there were things she did and people she either angered or did wrong by. I don’t know the whole truth, just a piece of it. Part of it is that she was falsely accused of being involved in my sister’s abduction, but I know that it’s not true, but I know the people involved. But… she… there were other things and it’s very realistic to think that she will never return, or be able to. She is… lost to me,” she said, feeling the deep pain that had rendered her numb and unresponsive all those months ago. She didn’t hide that despair and loneliness from Akem, even as she moved in closer and rested the full weight of her head in his hand, is if it was a cradle. Her own sense of attraction was most definitely there and while it couldn’t quite be called hesitation, there was this wavering. She wanted to delve deeper into the safe space of their shared emotions but she was trying to figure out if she could, if she was ready. She needed it though, or something resembling a caring release from her pain, that much was for certain.

Akem leaned closer to her, his thumb lightly caressing her cheek. “Often times the pain is preserved in our memories. Loss is by no means an easy thing to cope with. You will always have those memories, and in a sense that pain as well. But in order for you to move on…” he said pausing at that moment as sympathy and yearning met in his mind all at once, yearning beginning to win out.

He allowed his other hand to slowly move its way down to her hand and gripping it. It wasn’t tight enough to inflict pain, but there was a fire perhaps that was beginning to burn within him that would be felt through his fingertips and the palms of his hands. “New memories must be had if you desire to move past the pain.” His lips drew nearer to her, as though asking permission to continue with what she likely could feel already.

-Akem

Even as he moved in closer to her, Halai knew what was about to happen and how she would respond. “Agreed,” she whispered and pulled him in further, letting their lips touch briefly before kissing deeply.

To make love to another being was not a simple matter of desire for Halai. It wasn’t just about needs. Sure, there was a significant component of this exchange that was about needs and desires, but on a deeper level there was a fundamental part of Halai that had to share herself in a deeply intimate way- bodily and mentally- in order to survive. It was as much about sanity as physical health. This she had learned long ago, but only had become painfully apparent in the days after Billie had been taken away.

So Halai shared herself freely with Akem, knowing intuitively that he would protect the fragile parts of her and cherish the strong parts equally. He understood what so few beings truly could, and that in of itself was a blessing. For a brief time in his quarters as they travelled to the place of her birth, Halai felt free.
