Shinzak’s favorite time was that passed on a transport ship. Think about it, you can lock yourself in your room and have absolutely no one bother you. No one knows you (at least most of the time) and no one knows your motives. They keep away from you and allow you to spend quality time with the best person to spend quality time with: yourself.

OED V was going to be an adventure for Shinzak. The middle-aged Reman had worked as a slave in the mines of Remus, had worked as a slave manager in those same mines, had worked as a mining engineering lecturer at the most prestigious university in the Federation (Starfleet Academy, obviously) and had made a sizable fortune prospecting with the Federation Bureau of Minerals. He was now soon to be appointed as CEO of OED V Minerals Corporation, the colony-owned mining corporation of OED V. It was, given his security clearance access to the colony’s budget, the main money-maker for the colonial government. This was problematic. Minerals are finite. Wealth based on minerals, therefore, is finite. This was something to pay very close attention to. OED V was a critical source of wealth for the Federation, and the Federation Council’s Colonial Committee would be breathing down not only his neck but the neck of the entire OED V Cabinet to keep minerals flowing not not only keep the colony financially afloat (and therefore not have to grovel at their feet for grants) but to keep the Federation’s shipyards stocked with minerals.

Another thing Shinzak noted was the dramatic lack not only of efficiency but of employee retention. The facilities were very clearly under-performing, due in no small part to the lack of good leadership and the seeming lack of competence on the part of the cabinet. None of them particularly none of the two senior officers, had experience in mining. Moreover, the lack of employee retention meant the low-end workers of the firm were migrant workers that were looking for a quick buck but markedly lacking in competence. Practice makes perfect, and their lack of practice was visible.

Shinzak attempted to dream up several ideas how to deal with it. However, his reverie was interrupted by a comms message from the ship staff.

Shinzak would comply. All of his stuff was already delivered to his luxurious mansion that was prepared for him by OED V’s Department of Housing. His large fortune and his willingness to chip in a bit of his own cash meant his mansion was third in line after that of the Governor and his lieutenant. Why was this? Shinzak could have easily purchased the largest mansion. The problem was that Shinzak was aware of the dynamics of politics. Buying the biggest mansion would incite tremendous jealousy in the higher ups and potentially earn Shinzak their hate. Nicholas Fouquet, the comptroller of taxes to Louis XIV, a 17th-century Earth monarch, had the stupid idea of living more richly than the king, earning him significant punishments from Louis XIV (given this was tantamount to embezzlement).

He grabbed only a bag with his belongings and a small briefcase with all his printed documents. He then headed for the airlock.

After exiting the air lock with the rest of the passengers, he reported to what seemed to be a security guard guarding the airlock.

Posted beside the airlock’s parting doors, a large, masculine woman stood at ease. Keen eyes scanned the platform, her wide stance allowing her the flexibility to move quickly in the event of trouble. Out of the corner of her eye she caught sight of Shinzak’s approach.

“Hello, sir. I am Shinzak of Remus and I am the newly appointed Director of Mining Operations here. I am told that I have an office on the station. I would like to know where it is at once. While you are at it, please inform the Governor that I have arrived.”

(OOC: Somebody please play that security guard.)

OOC: No problem!

“Director.” At first glance, the security guard was taken aback by the sight of a Reman on the platform. “Yes, of course.” She nodded, scrolling through the list of individuals set to arrive that evening. “Your office is located in Oed’s Government Tower; the fourth floor from the top. You’ll find it’s situated between the offices of our Medicinal and Science Heads.” She gestured Shinzak to follow, “Additionally, your mansion has been complete. I trust you have its address?”

Typing away at her PaDD, the guard notified Governor Halloway of Shinzak’s arrival.

“Very well then. I will be in my quarters in the Star Port, which I assume are located where I was told it would be. As you might now, I am the only cabinet officer with a personal office here. I intend to do a full inspection of the facilities.”

SoR, HoMO

“I do not suspect you will find anything concerning.” The guard remarked, furrowing her eyebrows in the slightest indication of her skepticism. “However, whatever precautions you find necessary, we are here to help.”
