OOC:This is open, if you’d like to have your character join in with learning/practicing some (perhaps wacky) martial arts.
IC:

Smack!

Another hit slammed against the punching bag, sending it back by its force. No matter how many times she had driven her fist into the innocent face of her immobile opponent, it did not satiate the fire in her core; it fueled the flames, like gasoline to a lit match. “Just.” Smack. “More.” Smack. ‘Hit!” Smack! Thavos grunted, pulling back her hand, knuckles tainted a deeper blue, their sting numbed by her unfocused mind. Catching the bag, she pressed her forehead to its front, antennae folding back in resignation. Her breath ragged, chest heaving from the exertion, she stood there staring at the back of her eyelids. A soft sigh escaped her lips, releasing the tension that had begun to build up in her shoulders. Her physiology did not grant her the stamina to run off raw energy for long periods of time, a high metabolism depleting her strength quicker than salt dissolved in water.

Thavos knew more than the brutality of blunt, meager hits, but the memories were faded and often returned only in the midst of a fight-or-flight scenario. It wasn’t as though Thavos were in any particular danger, her immense size for a woman enough to scare most from their pursuit. Although, it was not the people of Oed she feared–if fear was even the right word. Rather, the people off of it. Since her meeting with Corinthos, she could not deny the nagging feeling that someone was after her hide. His enigmatic phrases and cryptic details set off a bomb inside of her, its fallout yet to diminish weeks after he had escaped her grasp. He was hiding something, a pivotal detail that was the key to her past. If only she had realised that when she had her hands wrapped around his neck, threatening to rip away his scheme.

Something was missing, that much she knew. It was an open wound, no knowledge of hers strong enough to cauterize. There it hung, just within her reach, but every time she drew one step closer, some force pushed her two steps back. It was a no-win scenario, but Thavos did not have the humility to accept defeat. Pushing the palm of her left hand against the punching bag, the other left to stabilise its motion, Thavos rose her head. She wasn’t going to get anywhere standing around like some schoolgirl incapable of standing up to her own bullies. If she was going to figure this out, she had to take her pride back from a bully she could not see. Isaria had to find a better way. Punching a bag just wouldn’t do.

Isaria whipped the towel from behind her neck, slapping it against her leg. Curling it around her fingers, she straightened it out, walking directly for her gym back. It was small but large enough to harbor room for an extra pair of socks, a bottle of water, a yoga mat and elastics for tying her hear. For a moment, she knelt by it, sipping from her water bottle, her icy gaze scanning the room where several Oedians busied themselves with a series of exercises–treadmills, weights, pilates–nothing that looked remotely enjoyable to her. It was in catching the eye of a man practicing Hatha that a thought bloomed into her mind.. martial arts. She wasn’t sure what kind nor from where, but she knew she had training. Training that would need some (or a lot) touching up, her inability to recall the last time she used it a flag of concern, but nonetheless training.

Plopping herself on the ground, Isaria tugged her shoes from her feet, setting them to the side. She had no idea what she was capable of, if anything at all, but she had to start somewhere.

Isaria Thavos,
The Amnesiac

“You seem to be having a good night,” A soft baritone said from the side. Standing there in grey sweatpants and a t-shirt with the insignia of the Oed Police Departments stood the Police Commissioner Joseph Karlson. He wiped a drop of sweat from his left temple, giving the Woman a friendly smile. Despite having access to his own personal exercise room and every police gym on the Colony there were still times when he preferred the public gyms. He put his large hands on his hips and looked around noting where her gaze had turned “You practice Yoga?” He asked curiously.

Joseph Karlson

Isaria glaced up to find the Police Commissioner, genuinely surprised he had chosen a public gym over the fancier (or so she assumed) ones the force offered. “I attempt the practice of yoga,” Thavos chuckled. “Whether or not I succeed? That’s a whole other story.” Pulling herself to her feet, she brushed her hands against the fabric of her yoga pants. Curiously, she eyed Karlson. “What brings you to a public gym, Commissioner? Rookies getting on your nerves?”

Isaria Thavos

Joseph gave her a hearty laugh “Not quite, I sometimes enjoy the casual setting more than the professional decorum” He looked around “Besides my officers are hardly ever surprised anymore when I outperform them” He gave her a playful smile “It’s much more entertaining watch young people burn themselves out trying to keep up” He nodded casually towards a group of young men sitting together in a corner drinking water and heaving heavily “And please, it’s Joseph. I’m not working right now”

Joseph Karlson

“Trying and failing by the looks of it,” Thavos mused, catching the eye of one of the young men, whose face reminded her of a tomato on a rainy day. “But..,” She shrugged, tapering off in resignation, “They’ve got tenacity and they’ll keep trying until it kills them.”

“Okay, Joseph. So.. what’s your secret?” Isaria leaned in a tad, arms folded. Raising an eyebrow, as if his fitness had some kind of magic behind it, she gave him a vivacious smile. “Or am I too young to learn?” She razzed, facetiously.

Isaria Thavos

Joseph chuckled at her age comment “No not at all, I started when I was young, back when the Enterprise was still at C and the Klingons were still the big bads of the Galaxy.” He reached to his side and removed a water flask attached to his hip, taking a sip “I’ve found that it’s a mixture of willpower and determination. Having a clear goal and marching towards it” He smiled as he talked “To me, fitness has a purpose, a functionality. I’ve always found that leadership means wading in the muck, not sitting in a corner office, at least some of the time.”

Joseph Karlson

Bosses sit around an order their people around like slaves; leaders push their people from behind, encouraging them from the darkest part of the pack.” Isaria quirked a smile, running the back of her hand across her forehead to slick away beads of sweat. “I’ll have to keep that in mind, Joseph. Thank you,” Thavos clapped her hands together, thinking a second. “Speaking of fitness,” She glanced over at him, “What do you think is the hest way to physically defend yourself?” He was a man of defense, she figured he might know better than anyone.

Isaria Thavos

The Police Commissioner crossed his arms as he considered the woman before him, taking a moment to observe her “Well that depends entirely on your personal preference. When I was young my mother taught me Marine hand to hand, since then I’ve studied many different Martial arts. In that time I’ve learned that understanding yourself gives you the best chance when defending yourself.” He took a step back “Take me for instance, I’m tall, heavy built and old. Understanding this helps me decide what to use when fighting, I don’t use grappling or elegant attacks. I prefer heavy hits that finish fights early. You are built differently, you may not be able to hit as hard as me but you should be faster and more flexible.” He smiled “Use your strenghts to your advantage.”

Joseph Karlson

OOC: Thank you!

IC: Isaria hands gravitated to her hips, a look of ponder assuming her. He was right, evaluating one’s strengths gave them a better chance at striking an advantage. Although, she wasn’t sure what those ‘strengths’ were. Andorians had fast metabolisms, a human could defeat them by forcing them to overexert. On the other hand, Andorians possessed natural wiriness, which made them quick on their feet. Contemplating Joseph, she nodded slowly. “Faster, yes. Flexible.. I think we’ve established that a hard ‘no.’” She mused. “Andorians are easily exhausted, do you have any ideas on how to end a fight quick despite our masses being different?” Clearly he was a lot bigger than her, but she wondered if there was a way to add power to her strikes. She asked many questions, but she was a woman seeking answers. Although, it wasn’t often Isaria asked for help, her pride a delicate thing.

Isaria Thavos

Joseph didn’t wait long to answer, he placed a finger on the side of his neck “Anatomy, the perfect roadmap to defeating your opponent. Striking nerve clusters can create openings that you can exploit, you should also explore Vulcan martial arts. Despite possessing strength beyond many other humanoids they don’t really incorporate it into they’re fighting style, it’s why many Humans often pick it up.” He smiled “But the most important and the best thing to learn is ‘always fight dirty’, go for any and all weak spots, eyes, ears, groin, neck are all valid targets. Carry small weapons that are easily concealed and can be grabbed quickly. If you are near any sand or dirt grab it and use it to blind your opponent. People that complain about the lack of honour in this way of fighting often forget that honour only matters to the living” Joseph explained with almost a professorial voice “Then of course when in doubt call your security detail, every single Cabinet member is protected by someone who I would rust with my Wife, Children and grandchildren.” He cocked his head slightly “Well how about a demonstration, want to goa round or two?” He asked.

Joseph Karlson

“Of course. I’m of no doubt in the capabilities of our security detail.” She waved a hand in reassurance, “I simply wish to know how to defend myself should it be necessary. After all, I should doubt the remainder of my life will be spent in the protection of such officers.” Isaria was ashamed of her ineptitude regarding the physical arts. Her people were an established war civilization, to be without the means of defending yourself was the forfeit that very right to deem yourself Andorian. She was sure, deep in the murk of her amnesia, she had once known such ways, but years lapsed and she had yet to regain any sense of what that training had been aside from a few obscene nightmares that threatened her sanity for the following day.

“If you’re willing to teach, I’m willing to learn.” She nodded in a horrible attempt to hide her excitement at the opportunity to learn.
