Nicholas strode into sickbay, his eyes evaluating the room. His training served him at all times. Count the people, find the exits, evaluate threats. He found the nearest available doctor. “Lt Cmdr James, Nicholas S. Chief Intelligence Officer. Reporting for arrival physical evaluation.”

The doctor looked up from the PaDD she had been consulting. “Well ok, James, Nicholas S. Hop on up on that biobed there, I’ll be right with you.” She went to get a medical tricorder. She warned a passing nurse “Weirdo at biobed 3.”

“Returning, she picked up the PaDD again. “Oh, I guess I didn’t introduce myself. Dr Elisabeth Cunningham.” When she only received a nod in response, she attempted to look up Nicholas’ medical records. “We have a slight problem. What isn’t classified here is redacted. I guess that’s solid proof you really are Intelligence. Um, is there anything in your history that I should know about beforehand? Allergies, anything like that?” Nicholas shook his head. “None.”

When Dr Cunningham started scanning Nicholas, it would appear as though his eyes and right hand were not present. There were abnormalities about his metabolism. What was human flesh and blood was in pristine working condition. She couldn’t help but ask though. “Cmdr… your scan results are-“
“Highly unusual? Not reflective of a human male entering his 30s? Missing pieces?”
“All of the above. There are humans your age and older who keep this fit, but you have a metabolism like you’re 20. Your eyes and right hand don’t even register on the scans. And are those… nanites? My god. What did they do to you?” For the first time, she genuinely looked in his eyes and saw the missing humanity. “It’s all classified or redacted. You can probably put the pieces together, but if I were you, I wouldn’t. You’re safest saying that all evidence you saw pointed to me being fit to serve. It’s not a lie, but it’s not the whole truth.” Elisabeth nodded. “Ok. I guess I’m cooperating with Intelligence now. I don’t like it. But I can’t help people if I’m locked up for digging too deep.”
“It’s for the best.” Nicholas got up to leave. Elisabeth blocked his path to the door. “Can I ask you a question? You don’t have to answer. Did they do this to you because you needed it, or because they wanted to?”
“Classified information. Trust me, the less you know, the better.”
