The man looked Conrad up then down. After a few moments, he seemed to accept this and turned to his comrade. A short whispering conversation was held before the burly man nodded and talked down the tunnel. Seeing Valkris’ suspicious glance, he began to explain.

“Bart is just going ahead to make sure the crew has the animals ready. When he gets back, I’ll show you the cargo you’ll be hauling.”

Conrad sighed. Waiting. He was not fond of waiting, given that it typically left him idle and doing nothing. What was a man to do in such times? He started pacing and eyeing up the entrance rather absentmindedly. “How long do you think that will take?” he asked curiously as though he had somewhere else he had to be.

“I’m curious myself,” Valkris pipped up.

Her arms uncrossed and fell down to her sides, released from their resting position. She didn’t give the man time to reply when she continued.

“We don’t have all day here. My client is waiting for his animals and I know he doesn’t want anyone nosing around his ship.” She pointed out then tacked on.

” I rather not give security all the time in the world to check his credentials and find issues. It wouldn’t suit us or you. So let us help to make this faster.”

Valkris’ teeth gritted in resistance to anything the man was about to say.

He inhaled and snort, giving in to her words, “Fine.”

His thick hand gesture for the pair to follow him down the tunnel.

“Do as you’re told and stay out of trouble, or it will cost your client,” he grumbled.

Behind the man’s back, Conrad raised an eyebrow and offered a smirk indicating he was impressed with her. He offered his hand up in gesture to the tunnel opening. “Ladies first,” he said with a slight bow.

Valkris flashed a brief, fleeting smirk in Conrad’s direction. It dissipated when their host glanced behind him. Not wasting more time, she stepped in behind the burly man and followed him. Their footfalls echoed throughout the tunnel as they went deeper in. Her eyes scanned the surroundings but saw nothing interesting. All the walls and floor blended into a grey, dull background.

The man finally ground to a stop when they entered a larger room. It was square and filled with cages to crates, the animals restless by their presence. He gestured toward the two feline-like creatures to the right. Their yellow eyes glowed and their lips curled back. They had no fur, but smooth and flawless skin. Their patterns reminded Valkris of a leopard.

“They are yours,” the man gruffed.

Conrad walked right up to the cage, eyes on the creatures as he moved. “You’re sure these are the creatures,” he inquired, pulling out a tricorder-like device. He looked back. “No tricks.”
