Behind the man’s back, Conrad raised an eyebrow and offered a smirk indicating he was impressed with her. He offered his hand up in gesture to the tunnel opening. “Ladies first,” he said with a slight bow.

Valkris flashed a brief, fleeting smirk in Conrad’s direction. It dissipated when their host glanced behind him. Not wasting more time, she stepped in behind the burly man and followed him. Their footfalls echoed throughout the tunnel as they went deeper in. Her eyes scanned the surroundings but saw nothing interesting. All the walls and floor blended into a grey, dull background.

The man finally ground to a stop when they entered a larger room. It was square and filled with cages to crates, the animals restless by their presence. He gestured toward the two feline-like creatures to the right. Their yellow eyes glowed and their lips curled back. They had no fur, but smooth and flawless skin. Their patterns reminded Valkris of a leopard.

“They are yours,” the man gruffed.

Conrad walked right up to the cage, eyes on the creatures as he moved. “You’re sure these are the creatures,” he inquired, pulling out a tricorder-like device. He looked back. “No tricks.”

Valkris glanced toward Conrad. He had a point as she approached the cage and crouched down to their level. They reacted in the very manner she expected.

Their jaw frills pulled upward and created an intimidating image. Long, pointed ears moved back while the larger canines came forward. The armor scaled back arched in alarm followed by a loud hiss. They looked like a cross between a lizard and lynxes.

“I’m more concerned about their condition. My client paid for the best, but if they die before we arrive… I doubt he’ll be very happy,” Valkris pointed out as she rose upright once more.

The man grunted in irritation, “They are fine, take my word for it.”

“If there any way you can prove this?” She asked causing the man to huff again.

He didn’t move and played it up like he didn’t hear her.

Conrad looked to the man. “Answer the lady,” he demanded. “Because here’s the thing. If we end up bring our client dead animals, you can rest assured your operation will be over. Honesty, really is the best policy. Better the shipment delayed than spoiled.”

He paused for a moment before speaking up again. “Would you like her to repeat the question?”
