“Hello there! My name is Shinzak and I am the CEO of OED V Minerals Corporation. I organized this reception. Welcome!”

SoR, HoMO

“Thank you for the invite Mr. Shinzak. As I am sure you know I am Lt. Cmd Longstreet of SF Security. This is my lovely date Ms. Apolonia.” Longstreet did his best formal like introduction.

“Hello commander. I am well aware indeed.”

As Longstreet presented Apolonia, he shifted his gaze to her and nodded as he introduced her.

“A pleasure Mr. Shinzak. Wow what an important title. CEO. That sounds fantastic.” Apolona said, laying on the star struck small town girl meets big shot routine.

Longstreet

Shinzak, being a socially-aware person, knew that Apolonia was attempting to flatter him. The fact she seemed to date a senior Starfleet officer meant she was likely not impressed.

“It is fantastic, Ms. Apolonia,” he’d reply, seemingly humbly.

Longstreet resisted giving Apolonia a look.

Nicholas has been watching the guests file in, making it appear as though the terraforming CEO was eager to get a bureaucrat alone to slip in a good word. Apolonia makes an appearance. Any sort of altercation or intimidation would cause too much of a scene in such confined quarters. For now, Nicholas would just listen to what she said to Longstreet. Anything might be a hint.

-Lt Cmdr Nicholas James, CIO

Shinzak was keeping an eye on the CIO. He did not invite a terraforming CEO and knew something was afoot. One of his security detail was monitoring the intruder, though given James’ status as intelligence director, it probably wouldn’t land him in a court martial.

Joseph nodded towards the Security Chief and his date, the name rang some bells although for the moment he neither knew nor cared which ones. That could wait, and if Longstreet vouched for her that was more than enough. “We haven’t had a good group meeting like this outside Cabinet meetings for some time now” Joseph mused.

”…and this is precisely why I organized this gathering. I thought I could speak a great deal about my plans for OED V’s mining and mineral processing sectors in a less formal location.”

“Though frankly I did not really come to talk ship but rather impress you with my date.” Longstreet quipped.

Oed had a way of keeping everyone busy in their own corner “Anything happen worth sharing?” He asked.

Commissioner Karlson

“Just this drink.” Longstreet said. “Really its more of the same Chief. Bad guys and Good guys.”

“Absolutely. As I’ve stated earlier, I think there are lots of gem deposits on OED V. I’ve been in close contact with the legendary Gem Cutters Guild on Ferengnar which has expressed interest in sending a few of its finest over here to grow the local economy. We cannot solely depend upon mineral revenue in this day and age.”

SoR, HoMO

“Ferengi. We have plenty now as it is. More work for Security. Though at least you know you can trust not to trust them. That is something.” Longstreet said. Knowing Ferengi were usually messed up in something illegal behind the scenes. Though only illegal to OED laws as he was sure they would not violate their won famous code.

Longstreet

Joseph chuckled at the Commander’s comment. He’d grown more and more familiar with his cynical outlook on species and their racial traits. An outlook he sometimes shared but perhaps not with the same amount of Cynicism “Oh now now, Preston, There are quite a few examples of Ferengi doing good and honourable work within the fleet. The most famous example being the Engineer lad from Deep Space Nine. In fact, my youngest son serves under a Ferengi Security Chief on the Scandinavia and he has nothing but respect for the man. Though it could be said about being exceptions that prove the rules.” He said with a half-smile.

Commissioner Karlson

“Let’s not get to using ethnic stereotypes, shall we?” Shinzak said, chuckling slightly and betraying his agreement with the two men’s statements on the matter. “These Ferengi gem industry professionals will make lots of money for OED V, and that is all that matters for now.”

SoR, HoMO

“Careful Mr. Shinzak, else you might be called a Oligarch of old. In this enlightened time the want of money is frowned upon.” Apolonia said while wagging her finger at him. However she then leaned in.

“Though I am not so enlightened.” She whispered.

Longstreet tugged her back and she looked at him with puppy eyes. Longstreet knew she could not resist herself. She was also releasing endorphins that would only heighten the situation.

Longstreet

“Taxable currency flows are not the same thing as private wealth, miss. Anyways, what projects are you all up to?”

SoR, HoMO

“Keeping the colony safe.” Longstreet answered quickly before Apolonia could cause more trouble. He said this as he raised his glass slightly and motioned Karlson’s way. He hoped he could get Karlson talking again to avoid Apolonia trying to get information out of everyone. Karlson might talk but he would never say anything intel worthy out loud. Which would make Apolonia have to smile and listen and get nothing from it.

Longstreet

Karlson gave his Starfleet counterpart a slight understanding nod “Quite so, not an easy feat mind you. Of course, the key to Colonial safety has and always will be solid co-operation between Civilians and Starfleet.” He gently squeezed his wife’s hand “Did anyone read the article about the Duroc Brothers struggle that O.M.A.P. released last week? It was even more entertaining than actually being involved and that’s saying something.” He said shifting the conversation slightly to the more banal, gossipy.

Commissioner Karlson

“Could you translate what you just said for into Mining Engineering Speak for me, commissioner? Also known as “Earth English,” Shinzak said, laughing at himself. He did not understand a word of what Karlson said and would like to understand.

SoR, HoMO

OOC: sorry for entering in a little late.

Entering the Mansion, Stephen glanced at his watch, before looking over to his smiling wife, completely unphased by their late arrival. If all had gone according to plan they would have arrived earlier, but apparently Shari got a call from a friend of hers about some rumours, causing the two to gossip for quite some time. Being shooed out of the room, Stephen has no idea what they were talking about, but knew better to interrupt his wife when something came up.

Meanwhile, Shari radiated an aura of calm, but internally was rather annoyed. A few new elements had been introduced to OED lately, elements that she did not have a firm grasp of. Hopefully her informant would have more news for her soon, as she hated to not be on top of the darker side of events on the colony.

Stephen and Shari Binns

Isaria recognized Stephen as a member of the cabinet, but she couldn’t say she knew more than his position. Beside him, a poised Orion stood, her aura reeking of premeditated calm that could tranquilize anyone around her. It was if she had something hidden up her sleeves. Thavos held little interest in the ulterior motives of her colleagues, she was here to welcome Shinzak to the colony rather than snoop in business that was not hers to prod.

“Stephen Binns, is it?” She approached them with cordial acknowledgement, a glass of champagne nestled in her fingers. “And I don’t mean to assume, but you must be Missus Binns?”

Isaria Thavos, HoEC

Smiling, Stephen gave a nod. “Ms. Thavos, it is good to see you again.” He gestured towards his wife. “And this is my lovely wife.”

Holding out her hand, the Orion stated on a friendly tone. “Shari. It is a pleasure to meet another one of Stephen’s co-workers, especially one that does such great work for this colony.”

Stephen Binns (HOC)

Apolonia was not phased by Longstreet’s maneuver. She smiled and gleefully looked at one to the other as they spoke like a good beautiful half Orion beauty. She had strong feelings for Longstreet and had for years. Even if he did not know that. However if you went to pet a snake the most likely outcome was to get bit. She was what she was and she knew Longstreet knew that. She would bide her time. It was amazing what one could learn when you just smiled and listened to everyone.

Apolonia

Turning his head slightly towards the Binns he smiled at the Remans question “Apologies, recently we some drama involving Klingons, ancient artifacts and an ancient forgotten story involving demons, it was quite the thing. Of course, like most stories involving Klingons, it involved a lot of dead bodies but thankfully no Civilian casualties.” He chuckled “I reccomend reading the articles about it, there are also the internal memo’s but they don’t make for very interesting readings.”

Commissioner Karlson

“Wait, why do we have Klingons here? Is there something I don’t know about the Klingon empire?”

SoR, HoMO

Joseph chuckled “We occasionally have Klingon Visitors, traders and the like, although we aren’t exactly close to the border we do have some trade relations. We even had Klingon artifacts in our museums for instance. Oed may not be a trading colony but I think people do prefer to stop here over Black Rock, something about having solid ground under your feet. Does the presence of Klingons concern you, Mister Shinzok?” He asked

Commissioner Karlson

“Shin-ZAK, commissioner,” the mining chief said, correcting the police commissioner. “As for having Klingons here, given my experience with them and their seeming obsession with feudal hierarchy, I will keep my distance.”

SoR, HoMO

Joesph nodded in acknowledgment of his mispronunciation of the man’s name “Indeed that may be the safest course of action. In any case, I’d like to welcome you properly to Oed V, if you ever need anything don’t hesitate to give me a call, this Cabinet looks out for each other, well at least that’s the theory” He said with a friendly smile.

Commissioner Karlson

“Do you only patrol the dome or are you responsible for the whole of OED V in terms of policing, commissioner?”

SoR, HoMO

“Yes but actually no.” Joseph said with a half-smile “Technically speaking the Colony has legal jurisdiction over the whole planet and system much like any other Colony would but with our current domed situation makes it difficult to enforce any such matters. That is why the fine members of Starfleet Security have such a prominent placement in our society. Starfleet patrols the system and guards the rest of the Oed system, hopefully when the terraforming project becomes successful we’ll be able to expand and grow, become more independent. I may not mind the fleet but I’m certain that our citizens would prefer if they could have more of a say in the governing of the system.”

Commissioner KArlson
