The door opened, but not onto a group of security or even one security officer, instead a dark haired woman walked in like a fresh breeze. Astrid, clad today in a well tailored ruby red skirted suit with a kick pleat and a dark blue blouse under the jacket, walked in her matching shoes over to Michael’s desk and tossed her briefcase on the chair in front of it. She was smiling pleasantly and not at all aware of the man hidden within a dark corner or what she might have stepped into.

She turned the Governor as she slipped her hat pin out of her matching hat and set it beside her briefcase. “Governor Halloway. I know I wasn’t expected, but I just finished visiting one of our outlying justice buildings and wanted to give you a report personally.” She was pretty and very obviously French if one could go by the accent. If one was really good, they would discern she was from New France rather than France on Earth. And even though she had obviously made herself comfortable and relaxed, short of taking off her suit jacket, she asked, “Is this a bad time?”

Making sure the door was closed, Nicholas reappeared, leaving his briefcase hidden. “Kind of. Call it a Borg nanoprobes family reunion. But do go on Ms Rousseau, the Justice Department is a very important issue.”

-Lt Cmdr Nicholas James, CIO

Astrid turned, noting the unexpected company with a raising of brows and a lowering of her smile. If she had been startled by his sudden appearance, she didn’t show it. Her eyes took in his face, height and details of what he was wearing. She didn’t know who this man was. The idea of continuing with sensitive Justice Department information in front of him without verifying who he was and his need to know was preposterous, though he looked as though he had every right to the information. Cocky? Arrogant? Her eyes narrowed a fraction and then she turned to look at Halloway, dismissing the man’s presence and letting Halloway handle it as he deemed necessary. She served at his pleasure.

Halloway stood up and greeted the woman with a grin. “Its quite alright. Mr. James here was just leaving actually.” He nodded to the CIO and added. “You’re officially dismissed, Commander.”

She returned his open grin with a kind smile returning to her face. She liked the Governor. He was methodical and thorough in his running of OED V. Astrid appreciated an organized mind. She took note of the man’s name and rank, filing it away for later research if she had time and was feeling curious. “Then my timing is perfect. I would hate to be a bother even for a subject as important as the Justice Department.”

He paused giving the man an out, and hoping he would just take it.

-Governor Michael Halloway

Nicholas remained exactly where he stood. “Aren’t you forgetting something? About your computers, Governor Halloway?”

-Lt Cmdr Nicholas James, CIO

The man did not take the out given by the Governor. She didn’t know what was between these men but there was no deference paid to the Governor by the Commander. To her, this was rudeness. Still, she wasn’t ready to interject or be rude herself, so she simply opened her briefcase and pulled out her PaDD to bring up the statistics she wanted to show the Governor. Astrid kept it close without being obvious she was hiding it. She just maneuvered herself as she sat down in a chair to make sure it wasn’t visible to either man. Years of being a judge meant years of hiding what she was feeling and what she was working on from prying eyes. IT was like second nature and was as smooth as her automatic tucking of her skirt as she sat.

Halloway grinned. “Ah yes, quite right. Feel free to restore them on your way out Commander. And thank you again for testing our emergency preparedness. Rest assured, we’ve learned a lot from this experience. We’ll keep in touch,” he said, gesturing to the door, waiting for him to leave.

-Governor Michael Halloway

“I’ll need to do it from your terminal. But rest assured, I’ll be on my way after that.” He walked behind the Governor’s desk and rapidly typed a seemingly senseless code. =Computer functionality restored.=

The Governor nodded. “Thank you Commander, we’ll be in touch.”

Another knock sounded on the door with a pause.

-Dawson, Owner of Secret Securities

Astrid watched as the Commander worked on the computers to restore whatever functionality was missing. She wasn’t stupid. She could tell at least on a surface level what was going on. The battle of wills was eye rolling to watch. When the knock came, she thought for sure this would just add another layer to the bravado in the room.

Nicholas had just been on his way to his briefcase when the knock came. “Another player enters the game.” he whispered to himself. He looked back to Halloway then back to the door, suspicion in his eyes.

-Lt Cmdr Nicholas James, CIO

“Come,” he said with a hint of frustration. Was his secretary outside the door handling things at all?

-Governor Michael Halloway

A tall, muscular man entered, his dark hair cut short. “I’m sorry Governor, your secretary seems to be away. I thought I would knock and see if you were busy.”

He glanced about, his gaze lingering on Astrid for the briefest of moments. If he could, he would have soaked in her form for longer, but he sensed someone else and looked to the left and right to find a man Lt. Commander Nicholas James, holding a brief case. Just the man he was looking for.

“Commander,” he stated with a nod.

Nicholas eyed the man. Dawson. Secret Securities.

She wasn’t wrong. Though she enjoyed seeing Dawson, he obviously knew the Commander and like the Governor didn’t particularly enjoy the man’s presence.

Turning to the Governor he added. “It seems you are quite busy. If you would like, I’ll just wait outside here or meet with you another time.”

“Another time perhaps?” asked the Governor.

“Sure thing. You know how to get a hold of me, sir.”

And with that, he held the door open for the CIO. “After you sir?”

-Dawson, Owner of Secret Securities

“Oh no. I insist, you go ahead. I’ll follow.” And he waited for the man to yield and exit first before following him out.

-Lt Cmdr Nicholas James, CIO

Finally annoyed at the impossibly false politeness, she set her PaDD face down on her lap and threw her hands up. “Oh for heaven’s sake would you all kindly deflate your egos for 10 seconds. Especially you Commander. You are acting like a child, not an officer of Star Fleet. Put on your big boy pants and respectfully take the exit you have been offered several times already. I think whatever point you wanted made is made and retarding taking your leave further only makes you look insolent and hard to work with, neither of which is in the best interest of this outpost.”

“Really.” She huffed out with an eye roll and then turned to the Governor. In this motion, she had fully dismissed the Commander and Dawson. She had business and her time was too precious to waste on pissing matches.

“Now Governor. I would like to show you some of the improvement statistics and discuss strategy on how to get certain sectors improvement scores up.” She pulled her PaDD back up and began toying with the information on the screen.
