Amelia stepped off the transport, her briefcase held tightly in her hand, her appointment orders. She was the new head of medical and social services. She had been working as a director in San Francisco for three years before deciding to come to the OED. Now she was heading to the government building to meet with the governor and let him know that she had arrived.

Michael Halloway was situated in office, aware of the coming meeting with the new Head of Medical and Social Services. Things were tense at the moment, given his recent contact from Intel. But none of that was made public yet. He stared out the window as the Oed sun cast its light on the dome.

-Governor Michael Halloway

Amelia knocked on the door and stepped into the Governor’s office “Governor, I’m Amelia Barnes, your new Head of Medical and Social Services.” She said extending her hand to the man behind the desk, she took in his demeanor “You are looking stressed Sir. Is there something I can help with?” She asked.

Amelia Barnes

Halloway forced a smile. “Not yet. However you may never know what could happen in a moment’s notice. Nevermind me, how are you doing Miss Barnes?” He stood up and offered a hand to shake as he gestured to one of the seats at his desk.

-Governor Michael Halloway

Amelia shook the Governor’s hand “I’m doing well. ” She said taking a seat “It was a long trip out and I’m glad to finally be here. Just waiting to figure out where my quarters are and where my office is.” She said “I’m excited to start my duties.” She added “How much trouble with child welfare do you have on OED?” She asked.

Amelia Barnes

The Governor nodded understanding as he sat back down. “Generally Oed has a screening. Families who seek to move here need to be in good standing on their current worlds. That doesn’t mean we don’t get the occasional family with some flaws. We have very few extreme cases because of this. Now, we do have corruption on Oed, just as you might find anywhere else. And it has the potential to stray into families who might arrive. So I’m confident there will be work. You’ll probably have your hands full with the hospital in itself more than anything. We’re in the process of building a second dome here on Oed, and we have had a few accidents already.”

-Governor Michael Halloway

Amelia nodded “Well, I will start assessing the needs and start moving staff out here once I have those needs assessed. If you or any of your cabinet members think of something that my department can provide, please let me know and I’ll take it under advisement.” She said “I have four workers that I plan to bring on once we have things figured out. We’ll need a couple of offices to work out of. I may also look at services that are needed to help families that are struggling. If you would like, once I have made these assessments, I can put it in a report and we can discuss how to impliment these things.”

Amelia Barnes

“That sounds excellent!” stated the governor. Someone arriving with a plan was always something that made Halloway happy. He knew that was impossible to have a fully contrived plan and have implemented with no hiccups, so the attempt to establish what was possible was always a plus. “And I look forward to it. It’s been some time since we have had a stable cabinet.”

Halloway then continued on. “Can you tell me a bit about yourself? Any past history experience that you feel will benefit you while on Oed?” he asked curiously. Records could speak for themselves, but hearing it from their own mouth was a true teller of who they were as an individual.

-Governor Michael Halloway

Amelia smiled “I’m from a small town in northern Montana, Kalispell, to be exact. I am the oldest daughter of a vinter. I have a younger brother, who is training to take over the winery. I have a degree in Social Work from the University of Montana at Missoula. I worked in Kalispell for a little while after I graduated and then decided to see what was beyond the stars and volunteered for the position here on the OED.” She said “So here I am.”

Barnes

Halloway nodded approvingly. “Good. Do you have any thoughts on changes you’d like to make to your department, or do you still require some time to look things over more? Either way is fine, just curious.”

-Governor Michael Halloway

“I will need a couple more days to assess the department and see what we need.” Amelia said “What I do need is some information from our security department about the number of reports they have had regarding injuries to children and disabled adults.” She said
