Katherine glanced around at the room. It had been tastefully cleaned up and reset for their company. She nodded to a few folks here and there as they came in. But her arm stayed on Michael’s for as long as she could get away with.

Besides him being handsome, it also let others know that she wasn’t just some strumpet along for the ride.

The Longstreets, as Apollonia was fond of joking, arrived at this time. Obviously Apollonia would gather attention. Longstreet lean and long would surveil the room.

Longstreet and Apollonia

((Giving it 24 hrs or so to see if anyone else wants to join the cruise… Meli))

One perk about society progression, gender roles melted away. Valkris didn’t have to wear a dress to formal occasions even if it was tradition. Not that she couldn’t fight in or expected to need to, but her mood dedicated her fashion sense. She didn’t feel like dealing with the self awareness.

She just finished tucking in some loose black pants into her boots then tied them off. On her torso was a forest green top that fell to her mid thigh and strapped to the middle with a decorative belt. Of course, the buckle itself could release into a blade in hers if needed. Personally, she preferred to leave it purely decorative for the rest of the evening.

With one last tousle of her curly short hair, she left it loose. It would do for now as she no better styles. Valkris let out a small sigh then exited her room to arrive at the event. For the most part, the half Klingon officer felt out of place. It was easier to observe the interactions and protect the guests than be one of them. At least, in her mind. It could’ve also been due to her nervousness over this whole thing.

At that point, a man with dark hair, dark leather-like clothes, and green eyes made his way to Valkris without bringing too much attention to himself. Or at least, that was the goal. He quietly slid next to her and asked, “Looking for something in particular?”

Meanwhile, Michael Conrad led the beauty on his arm to the side of the platform before stepping up to the center. The music faded to background noise as he spoke. “Greetings all, and welcome to the Black Sparrow. I’m your captain, Michael Conrad. We are underway here in the Oed system for the rest of the evening. Take time to enjoy yourselves here with our complimentary dinner. The bar is open. We will be spending several days traveling to different systems. We will have 3 stops, as many of you already know. You’ll be allowed to disembark and mingle with some of the tourist areas made available to us. My lovely assistant, Katherine is available to answer any questions, should you have any.”

He took a nearby cup and raised it. “So without further delay, enjoy the trip! We’ll be back at Oed V in five days.”

The band then picked up, and Conrad stepped down to the Rine. “Something tells me you may be hungry?”

Longstreet smiled and lifted his glass. He then downed it with one stroke. He was pretending to be the old earth southern gentlemen but the truth was he did not trust Conrad as far as he could accurately aim a phaser at him.

Apollonia on the other hand tipped her glass slight upward and took a sip. She smiled around the room. Basically looking for someone stupid enough to have brought valuables along and more importantly to make her next contact for that most precious of all treasures, intel.

Longstreet/Apollonia

Katherine laughed as Michael stepped down and offered her food. “You sure you are a Captain and not a diplomat? Or perhaps, like the great starships the Federation has, you are a bit of both.” She nodded, “I could eat. But only if you do. I’ll have more than enough time to nibble while you are jostling us around the system this week.” She offered her arm this time, with a smile.

“I have to admit, you do send your invites to everyone. I see folks from shop owners to mere officers. What do you hope to gain from excursions like this?” Her curiosity was piqued and she was sure this was more than a dog and pony show.

Valkris had been distracted. Her mind lost in her thoughts and her body on automatic movements, she didn’t notice Dawson. The man slid in like a ghost and would’ve gone unnoticed until he spoke. She jerked then snapped her eyes to him. Her other hand had lowered to her belt as more of a reflex than an ill-intention. A small sigh escaped through her gritted teeth.

Dawson internally grinned. He had seen her hand reflexively move, and had been fully prepared for something. However, he gave no indication of his preparedness and simply grinned as she replied to him.

“No, I’m debating on if I should mingle or simply watch.”

Her peripheral vision noticed Conrad, the captain of the Black Sparrow, as he walk to a platform. She listened to his welcome speech echo throughout the room. It was a surprise to see him here as she looked to Dawson, a silent question about his intentions on her glance.

Dawson quietly spoke to Valkris, leaning in. “Captain of the Black Sparrow. We shall see what role he plays as the week unfolds.” He found the man to be curious. There was not much on record of him. And what there was of him, seemed not enough to accurately portray the his character.

-Dawson, Owner of Secret Securities

Longstreet was content to watch for now. However he could feel the small muscles in Apollonia’s hand twitch. She smelled opportunity and was ready to select her victims. He decided to let her run. It might distract others so he could go snoop around or overhear something interesting.

Longstreet

Katherine kept half an ear on the Captain as she glanced around the room. It wasn’t in her nature to love gatherings like this. Too many variables for her liking. Especially since she had been tossed into it after the planning phase. She knew nothing of the security set up, off limit precautions or who was who. It was a bit disconcerting to say the least.

“Oh there’s much to gain for sure,” he started as he made his way to an open spot at the bar. “Knowledge primarily. Spend enough time with certain people and you get to know some things about them. And if one is truly skilled, you can learn things few others know. I find being a stranger can sometimes make it easier for people to let loose. No worries about hurting someone close. And the chance of never seeing the person again, can help as well. Once you know people, things get easier to keep the Sparrow maintained.”

Apollonia smelled the small anxiety from the woman. She suddenly rose and approached her.

“Heck of a gathering. Not sure the bad guys from the good guys or…does it matter?” She said in a playful almost flippant way.

Apollonia

Katherine wasn’t started by the woman’s approach. But the comment caught her attention. “If all guys were good guys, would we honestly want them?” She nodded respectfully and winked. “Ms Apollona, correct?” She was learning everyone’s name but it was slow going. And she wasn’t aware she had mispronounced it.

“So true dear. Yes its Apollonia. Where have they been hiding a beauty such as yourself?” Apollonia said pouring it on in every direction.

Conrad was caught slightly off guard. His heart rate quickened as he could almost smell the pheromones in the air. Memories of a different Orion surfaced within mind. But he wasn’t in the past. He quickly pushed the memories away as he kept his focus. “Good, bad, doesn’t matter. On the Black Sparrow, anyone can learn to be friends. And what brings you to this ship, madam?”

-Michael Conrad, Black Sparrow CO

“Dear Mr. Captain it always matters in the end which side you end up on. Being friendly is one thing but friends is another. I prefer gray zones don’t you.” She said.

Katherine sensed the rise in Michael, but couldn’t figure out what it was for. Figuring the woman had just startled him, she smiled as he inquired about her as well. Her arm gently moving to rest on the small of his back. Whether the reassurance was for him, or a warning for the woman that he was taken, she couldn’t have said.

By which side Apollonia only recognized two sides to anything. The winning side and the losing side. Ethical and moralistic values not being on the table.

She noticed the act of possession the other woman had taken. That was fine. A man liked nothing better than being desired from more than one woman. She could use that.

Valkris’ tension remained due to Dawson invading her personal space. She ignored it for now. Her eyes flickered over to the man occasionally as she examined the scenery. She picked a few individuals that caught her attention. Gradually her hand shifted from her belt then back down to her side. She doubted Dawson would hurt her after their last conversation. It didn’t stop her from remaining on alert.

“I recall him from the zoo incident. While I’m not a fan of his skirting the law, he doesn’t strike me as a threat. At least not in this case. There’s plenty of others I’m not too familiar with.”

She looked into the direction of the busier interactions. “Mind enlightening me on the guest list?”

Apollonia

Longstreet continued to watch everyone while looking cheerful. He let Apollonia do her thing for now.

Longstreet

Apollonia

Apollonia waited to see the reply of the Captain. She was interested in this man’s true motivations. everyone it seemed on OED had a separate set of priorities and it seemed they were usually well into the gray zone. Just the way she preferred it.
