SNIP

Realizing the conversation between Appolonia and the Captain was likely one better suited for two, she nodded and smiled to then both and excused herself on the grounds of checking the other guests.

In truth, the woman made her hair’s stand up in warning. She never considered herself the jealous type, and certainly not over someone she hardly knew. But despite that, she’d found herself far more possessive feeling about the Captain than she probably had a right to. She had stepped away before crossing a line Michael might not have wanted her to cross. After all, he hadn’t acted like a man laying claim to her. So she should know better, herself.

Stopping here and there to get folks, she eventually found her way to Valkris. Making sure she wasn’t interrupting, she smiled. “Welcome aboard the Sparrow I trust you’re finding everything to your satisfaction? Can I offer you a drink? Dinner will be served very soon.” She wanted everyone to feel special this trip. Michael had his reasons for the soiree and she didn’t want to mess it up.

Valkris had drifted off from Dawson as she mingled with the other guests. While not a professional at it, she managed to make some conversation and hint at her awkward nature. It likely explained why a few avoided her completely. Most still held the assumption a half Klingon was violent and lacked certain delicate qualities. Not an assumption without some evidence, she thought to herself.

Her thoughts were interrupted when she heard a female voice address her. She lowered her glass from her lips and turned to her conversation partner. The woman could be summarized in a few words. Dark-haired with blue highlights, blue eyes, and athletic shape. Valkris stored the information away for later.

No use in lying about her enjoyment of the occasion. “It is a lovely party, but I will admit I’m feeling like a Targ in water.”

Katherine smiled in sympathy. “I know what you mean. I would certainly feel more comfortable in a flight suit shooting up alien space craft. But for whatever reason, Fate decided we needed to be here tonight. I am glad you came.” She nodded and grinned. “I’m Katherine, by the way. Hostess, I suppose, and your guide for the trip should you need anything. I trust you found your quarters all right? I know they are small but it’s not for long.” She knew some of the guests had been seeking more lavish quarters. But it was a one night trip and most would be doing no more than sleeping in the beds provided. The tour of the ship and the space they were flying in were Michael’s main agenda. This was an information trip, not a pleasure cruise.

“Valkris and it feels good not to be alone at least,” Valkris commented.

Immediately her mind noticed the woman’s nervous energy but didn’t comment on it. It wouldn’t change anything. Casually Valkris took a sip of her drink and noted it tasted milder and sweeter than Klingon blood wine. It reminded her of a mellow version of Kanar. Content with her choice, she continued the conversation, addressing each thing one by one.

“I’m still learning the layout, but it shouldn’t take long. I was always a quick study for things that mattered. It makes being a Starfleet officer easier.” She held a hint of pride in her voice over that matter.

“From your statement, you don’t usually host such events. While I don’t believe in Fate, I do believe we make our own choices in life. Whatever caused you to consider being a hostess for something like this?” A curiosity edged into her voice as she inquired about the motives that lead to this.

By this time Longstreet had pulled Apollonia away from the rest.

“Breathe at least. You woudl think they all had latinum in their pants pockets.” He told her.

“Oh don’t be jealous. I am just getting the law of the ship. Who is who. Anyway anything I get on them I am sure you can use.” She answered.

“Well maybe but this is a sly group. They are not easy pickings and honestly I prefer you did no picking at all.” He said back.

“I’m all yours dear. Mind and body but a girl has to play.” She cooed at him.

Longstreet

That last comment worried him. Up and until this point she had managed to avoid trouble but she still had dangerous people looking for her and all she had to do was peek her head up to high and they would come.

Longstreet

Katherine laughed at Valkris. “I’m here because of a choice I made in life. That was to poke around the exhaust of this ship in curiosity. My penance I guess you could say, for being curious was to be asked to help the Captain with this voyage. The dog and pony show is to show off the ship and its capabilities while at the same time making alliances, I think.” She shrugged at the last part and glanced back towards Longstreet and his companion. She was pretty sure alliances wasn’t on the woman’s agenda. At least, not ones that would benefit anyone but her.

Turning back to her guest, she smiled once more. “So what brought you here? What Fates tipped your head this direction and decided a romp in space for a night was a good idea?” She took a drink from a passing waiter and set her sights on scanning the rest of the room to see where everyone was heading. Last thing she wanted was folks wandering unguided around the ship.
