SNIP

Katherine laughed at Valkris. “I’m here because of a choice I made in life. That was to poke around the exhaust of this ship in curiosity. My penance I guess you could say, for being curious was to be asked to help the Captain with this voyage. The dog and pony show is to show off the ship and its capabilities while at the same time making alliances, I think.” She shrugged at the last part and glanced back towards Longstreet and his companion. She was pretty sure alliances wasn’t on the woman’s agenda. At least, not ones that would benefit anyone but her.

Turning back to her guest, she smiled once more. “So what brought you here? What Fates tipped your head this direction and decided a romp in space for a night was a good idea?” She took a drink from a passing waiter and set her sights on scanning the rest of the room to see where everyone was heading. Last thing she wanted was folks wandering unguided around the ship.

“By the looks of it, I think the captain might’ve attracted a Saber bear from the looks of it.” Valkris’ eyes narrowed on Apollonia, a subtle hint toward the woman.

With each interaction, the security officer’s caution grew. The woman flitted from one guest to another like a predator on the hunt among the flock. Only a matter of time before she selected the best and struck. Valkris inhaled softly then took a sip of a drink once more. It wetted down her throat and gave her pause to consider how much to share.

At the statement of having a romp in space, her lips curled into a smirk. “Actually no, I’m here strictly because of an associate’s request. I prefer more casual settings than this. With a Klingon father and strong-willed human mother, you can imagine how interesting those affairs can be.” At the mention of casual family affairs, a fond memory surfaced in her thoughts. A small chuckle escaped into the air.

Apollonia sized up her competition. She had thought the other Orion would be the one to look out for but these other two were wary as an Antillean cat. She would need to watch that security officer. Maybe get Longstreet to do something about her.

Apollonia

Katherine laughed as Valkris commented about Apollonia. “I wouldn’t say bear, but certainly hunting something she hasn’t found yet. That’s for sure. As for your lineage,” she smiled. “I can imagine meetings weren’t boring, at least.” She finished her drink and set it on a nearby table. “And I would think it might be preferable to be here at the behest of your associate than back at the station doing the same ‘ol, same ‘ol. I know I would rather be here than back at OED working with cadets in some sim trying to keep them from crashing into one another or the ships they are supposed to be protecting.” She laughed lightly thinking of her own funny moments in the comment.

Valkris’ attention moved from Apollonia and continued to lock onto Katherine. She purposely ignored Apollonia’s glance in their direction to feign ignorance over being observed. Nothing on her person betrayed her status as a security officer for Starfleet. She had no official reason to wear a uniform and only Katherine had any clues to her position.

“ I will agree. The worst part,I think filing the report for the zoo incident was the hardest thing. I was off duty when it happened and more became entangled when things went… horrible wrong.” Valkris answered casually, her mind recalling the case several weeks ago.

She moved onto a new subject. “What’s the most memorable or odd experience during your career?”

Katherine’s eyes lit up. “Zoo incident? I’d love to have a stiff drink and hear about that one. Sadly, the events I find weird, odd or memorable have more to do with ship to ship fighting, training sims gone awry, and maybe the occasional embarrassment at a dignitary function. Though,” she grinned slightly and though it was brief, her cheeks colored a moment before she got it under control. “I admit, my back end sticking out of this ship when its Captain found me is probably up there as well.” She glanced back looking for Michael wondering when she could get him alone again. Their banter, even if that’s all it remained, was the highlight of her arrival on OED to this point. And she hoped it wouldn’t be over.

“If you stick around long enough, I’m sure something will entangle you. You would think my time in Starfleet would be filled with excitement, but OED has its own surprises.” Valkris stated as she took another sip.

“Also, when I tell you that story… I can suggest something rather strong. I can’t promise it won’t knock you down if you get carried away. You’ll likely need to just believe the wild ride it was. My half-brother won’t stop teasing me about how it’s impossible to take me anywhere without attracting trouble.” She joked lightly about the event then noticed Katherine’s glance around.

“I hope I’m not distracting you from something more urgent…” The half Klingon trailed off as she allowed the woman to answer.

Katherine smiled. “Not at all. Just awaiting orders from the Captain. Or a complaint from a guest.” She laughed lightly. “And strong drink stories are always the best.” She winked to the woman in agreement.

Apollonia kept her ear toward the women talking.

“They do seem the on guard type. Isn’t that one yours?” She said nodding her head toward MacClaren.

Longstreet looked over. “Yea she is under my command but honestly I do not know her well.”

“Dear she is not bad looking. You should you have not pulled her in for a surprise inspection before.” Apollonia goaded him/

“Not my style and you know I only have eyes for you.” He answered.

However it did make him wonder why he had not taken the time to know more than a few details about the Ensign. Even though knowing much about every ensign under his command was not actually practical.

At this he moved off Apollonia and approached the two women. For her part Apollonia looked around for another mark to play.

“Ladies.” He said as he approached them.

Longstreet

As Longstreet approached, Katherine shifted her body slightly to keep the approaching man from blocking her view of the majority of guests. “Ahhh… Mr Longstreet, isn’t it? I hope everything is all right for you?” She didn’t make introductions because she guessed, in this limited location, the two security folks knew one another. It was handy to have a guest list at your fingertips at times. Their relationship within Security wasn’t known to her, but in space, folks were rarely ignorant of others in the ‘family’ of duties.

“Not bad at all. Thank you.” Longstreet answered. “For a SF man I’m actually more land based. Not a big starship guy but the Sparrow is quaint. Not the massive ships we usually get stuck on. Ensign MacLaren. Nice to see you doing some R&R.”
