Brianna straightened her jerkin and took a deep breath. She wasn’t sure what made her nervous. But for some reason, she was.

The fire headed Head of Mining was striding down the corridors on her way to the Governor’s office as she contemplated how far she’d come since the last time she had walked this hall with meeting the old Governor as her goal.

Red hair piled in a loose mass on her head, she was every inch of the Fire Born nickname that now was spoken more than her birth name in reference to her. Somehow, the Klingon moniker had stuck and she had used it to full advantage. Many in the mines had thought, being a female from The Fleet, she wouldn’t have what it takes to remain in her position. But her fiery attitude, hot temper and burning push to make everything happen at top notch performance levels had come in handy and now she was well liked and respected by the majority of those who worked with and for her.

Coming to the Governor’s office, she stepped in and nodded to the person behind the desk. “Brianna O’Harra, Head of Mining. I believe I had an appointment with the Governor this afternoon.” She hoped she wasn’t late. To be honest, she had actually contemplated an excuse for not coming. But at the last minute, she knew she had to come. No point in putting it off. He would certainly know about Urg and the new mine, now appropriately called Cliff Qapla’ (Cliff Success). It was in full swing with its first official load had shipped to the refinery that morning. She couldn’t think of any reason to prolong the meeting.

A Bajoran woman was seated at the desk and she looked up the calendar. “Yes, Miss O’Harra. Governor Hyrushi is expecting you. Please have a seat and I will let you know when he is ready for you.” and she gestured to a comfortable-looking seating area opposite the desk.

It was a few minutes later when the receptionist looked up. “Miss O’Harra? The Governor will see you now.” and the doors to the Governor’s office swung inwards to allow her access. The room was very large, with a white tile floor, and consisted of two walls of floor to ceiling windows lining the left side and the wall facing the doors. The right wall was a white masonry of some kind for half of the length of the room; and the masonry section was set in from the windows of the far right corner, with a large fireplace in front of a seating area. The room was barren and obviously in a state of extreme transition. The only part of the room not in flux was the desk in the corner of the room made of the two walls of windows. The desk sat on a raised section of the room, and there were three chairs in front of it. Seated at the desk was the Governor, a striking Asian man with full jet black eyes. As the Mining Director entered, Kenzo stood up.

“Miss O’Harra. A pleasure. And I thank you for setting the meeting. I was about to do so myself. Please, be seated.” and he indicated the center chair in front of the desk.

Taking a seat himself, he said “So please… bring me up to speed on the mining activities of the colony, if you would be so kind.”

Kenzo B’tren-Hyrushi, Governor

Brianna smiled and took the offered seat. “Thank you, Sir. I hope you are settling in well enough?” She settled into the chair and crossed her right ankle up onto her left knee. “Well, I can tell you we are running at full mining capacity at the refinery. The last reports of duty personnel, loads coming and going and processing speeds are all at max and running without a hitch.”

She glanced out the window a moment and then back to the man and continued. “We currently have two new mines whose first hauls are headed up to the refinery this week. Cliff Qapla, Klingon for ‘success’, is showing a lot of promise despite looking like it had been gone over in the past. It is owned, primary by OED but House Duroc owns the remaining interests. The charter and subsequent agreements to that are logged with the Mining Department and approved. The other mine, Koh-i-nor, is also up and running though it is rather new and being mapped as it’s dug. It is solely the property of OED and is currently in negotiations with two Mechanical conglomerates for the rights to ‘first dig’ privileges. The other three mines still in operation are the Grasberg, the Mirny, and the Openheim. All three are under contract and still operating at peak production. There are a half dozen smaller places that are tapped out for commercial use but still mined for general sale to private claimers as well as used for training of personnel before going to the major mines.”

She slid a small data stick from her pants pocket and leaned over to place it on his desk. “All the mines, their production numbers and most recent reports, including personnel and safety, are there for the looking when you want. We have a three day shut down set for a week from tomorrow for standard general maintenance of the refinery. The mines will all have the option to shut down for those three days or remain working with skeleton crews. Safety measures and holiday slash low vacancy protocols will be observed as always.” She took a moment to resettle in her seat. “I wasn’t sure what else you’d want, so I put as much info about mining and the mines, themselves, on there as I could.” She was never sure what one person would ask over another. Most didn’t care about the mines, just the bottom lines. Others were more interested in the running and naming of the mines more than credits they couldn’t control. So she had done her best to cover both sides of the curious nature in hopes one of them would please the Governor.

The Governor held his obsidian eyes on her as she spoke, and nodded slightly in understanding as she spoke. When she was done, he sat in silence for several moments before he reached forward and tapped the desk interface.

A holographic display appeared, showing Oed V in it’s entirety. A blue dot indicated the city, and few red dots… less than a dozen… were scattered around the planet. “Oed V as it stands now. Here is the city.” and he pointed at the blue dot. “The red dots are the operational mines. These -” and he tapped the console and more than a few dozen black dots littered the globe, “- are known, viable, ore and mineral deposits. All at least eighty-five percent certain to be able to sustain profitable mining operations. All of this means one thing: Oed V has the raw materials sufficient to support itself and make us one of the mining centers of this sector. What I need to know from you, Ms. O’Harra, is why the rest of these deposits are not being thoroughly surveyed and developed. And please… speak freely. I simply want to know why this isn’t being pursued.”

Hyrushi, Governor

Brianna didn’t stutter as her eyes scanned the holographic display. “Because I have only the man power, currently, to survey approximately three locations a month. Surveys take approximately twelve to fourteen days because they each need to be drilled in various places to discover the edges of the viable fields as well as a a large bore dig to decide if it’s merely one vein we are getting in the drill lines or more. These three here,” she pointed to the three closest to the stations, “have been surveyed and the reports should be out in about forty eight hours. These here,” she pointed to the next three, “are currently under survey now and will be done in about two weeks.” She leaned back once more and shook her head. “I haven’t been here a whole month, myself, so I am still learning how far the last Head of Mining had scanned.” She thought for a moment and then looked up at him. “If you can give me a couple weeks, I can see about pulling a few from each of the current working mines and perhaps a couple more bodies from the refinery. With a few reassignments, I may be able to add a couple more mines to the monthly list. But we’ll need more able bodies if you want the rest done any faster.”

In the back of her mind she wondered, just for a split second, if she should ask Urg for some help. But just as soon as his name crossed her mind, her gut told her it was a bad idea. Anything he got his hands on, he’d likely want a stake in. And any other mines that panned out needed to go to the lists for sale or OED wouldn’t be able to spread their popularity. Don’t want everyone in house to own the treasures, she mentally chided herself.
