It had happened like something out of a bad joke. But OED was the punchline. The logs showed one of the ships, the IKS KAVAAR’TON, was cleared for orbit. But it was the second Klingon vessel that put Katherine’s hackles on edge as she saw it on the screen during her shift in observation. She looked up, about to say something, when comms hit the button first to reach out.

=^=Unidentified Klingon Vessel. You are entering OED airspace. Please identify yourself and what business you wish to conduct.=^= It was a standard greeting to all ships. Katherine had heard the greeting a million times. But this time, Obers sounded .... polite.

Smiling at the man, she nudged his shoulder. “Getting soft on me, Obers? I almost expected to hear you offer to tuck them in with a dinner mint.” She laughed and shook her head at the man.

The man shook his head and brushed her arm away. “Come on, Scotts… you know better than to piss off Klingons. I just happen to listen to such advice.” He laughed as well as she did and took it in stride. “Also, this is the second Klingon vessel now in orbit. Do you really wanna be the one to piss them off if things go sideways around here?” He shook his head and grinned to hide the shudder that went thru him.

“No. Always look up was my dad’s advice when I said I wanted security and then ended up a pilot. Looking up is the only way to be sure no one’s sneaking up on you.” She tapped a quick message that would scramble the Wing in case this wasn’t another friendly visitor.
