“The southern residential area has a wonderful park with lots of trails. I’d recommend that for your run. And cave diving? That seems a bit of an adrenaline sport, is it not?” he asked and picked up a piece of sashimi with is chopsticks and popped it into his mouth.

Hyrushi, Governor

“Thank you,” Kaili replied with a sparkle of excitement in her dark eyes. “I’m definitely going to check that out. As for cave diving: That is exactly why I love it. Plus the sheer beauty of underwater caves. They are almost magical places!” Finishing the last spoonful of soup, she pushed the bowl to the side and reached for her fork and knife instead while contemplating how to best go about eating this whole and strangely flat fish.

“Wait.” Kenzo said and stood up from his shair. He went to the vacant server’s station and came back with a napkin wrapped around something. He set it next to her and sat down.

With her fork hovering over the plaice, Kaili waited curiously; wondering what the Governor was getting for her.

Inside the rolled up napkin were a pair of chopstick and a much smaller fork. “Use the sticks to lift off the skin, then use the small fork to pull the meat down and away from the backbone. It will keep the small bones out of the meat and then it is easier to eat with your fork.” and he took another bite of his meal.

Hyrushi, Governor

Switching her fork for the chopsticks, Kaili smiled at Kenzo. “Thank you, Governor,” she said as she tried to follow his instructions. “I like fish. I’m just not sure I’ve ever had this one. Or one that still looked so much like a fish for that matter,” she admitted and then added with a soft chuckle, “Though it looks a little as if some one stepped on it. It’s so … flat.”

Kenzo chuckled softly. “It’s a flounder. Very light, flaky fish. But it grows flat with its eyes and mouth all on one side.” he explained. “Quite good if it’s cooked well.” he added as took another bite.

Kenzo, Governor

Kaili laughed softly and then said, “I’ll have to look them up later. I’m quite intrigued by a fish like this.” She then took a first bite of the fish. Her eyes closed as she savoured it’s taste. Once she had swallowed, she opened her eyes again and said with a smile, “It’s really good. I have no comparision, but seems to have been prepared very well indeed.”

Kenzo nodded but continued to eat in silence for a while. Finally, after a drink, he said “So what is it you hope will happen if and when you find your parents?”

Hyrushi, Governor

“I hope I’d rather not find my birth mother. She has been dead for 36 years and I can happily without corpses in my life,” Kaili stated matter-of-factly, though the corners of her lips twitched ever so slightly. “What I am hoping for most is to find out who they were. I know my birth mother’s name and that she was an engineer, but not much more than that. And should my birth father still be alive and if I ever meet him … I don’t know. I’d ask him if he knew of me and if the answer is yes, why he never bothered to try and get to know me. Whatever his answers may be, I think I’m hoping to get to know him at least a little.” She gave a small shrug and and then ate another forkful of her dinner.

“Surely you have tried agencies that specialize in such matters, have you not?” Hyrushi asked. “I know after the war, there were dozens of such organizations trying to reunite families. I know a few of the reputable ones, if you need any help.”

Hyrushi, Governor

“Actually, no,” Kaili replied without hesitation. “I know I could have and that I may already have more answers if I did, but …” She shook her head and her smile turned ever so slightly sheepish. “Feel free to call me a fool, but I want to find out as much as possible on my own. And at my own speed or time or whatever. But if I don’t make any progress over the next few months I may take you up on that offer.” She took a deep breath as felt another wave of mixed emotions roll over her. Longing, fear, anger, hesitation, even a hint of desperation. She took a moment to recognise each one in turn and then let it pass.
