“Surely you have tried agencies that specialize in such matters, have you not?” Hyrushi asked. “I know after the war, there were dozens of such organizations trying to reunite families. I know a few of the reputable ones, if you need any help.”

“Actually, no,” Kaili replied without hesitation. “I know I could have and that I may already have more answers if I did, but …” She shook her head and her smile turned ever so slightly sheepish. “Feel free to call me a fool, but I want to find out as much as possible on my own. And at my own speed or time or whatever. But if I don’t make any progress over the next few months I may take you up on that offer.” She took a deep breath as felt another wave of mixed emotions roll over her. Longing, fear, anger, hesitation, even a hint of desperation. She took a moment to recognise each one in turn and then let it pass.

“Its good you acknowledge your feelings, Doctor.” Hyrushi said without looking up from his plate. He was mixing soy sauce and wasabi together. HIs father always scolded him when he did it as a child, spouting off in Japanese about ‘tradition’ and ‘respect’. It wasn’t until he was older that Kenzo formed and appreciation for those terms, but with regards to this, he remained steadfast. Mixing them help him get just the right ratio of soy sauce to wasabi. “Many people can’t do that. And it colors their perceptions of things.”

“Mostly I have my mums to thank for that and it also comes with my profession. Becoming a mental health professional means a lot of work on your own mental health and having a therapist yourself. I can’t let my own emotions cloud a therapy session. Just as I have to be able to recognise and then act appropriately in situations of transference and countertransference. To be able to do that I have to know myself and be able to deal with my own emotions, biases, memories and whatnot,” Kaili replied after swallowing another bite of fish.

” I believe the adage ‘Physician heal thyself’ is applicable here.” and he smiled. “So why did you become a mental health professional, Doctor? Was that a result of your upbringing? Or simply something you passionate about?”
