As the Chief Justice laughed, Urg’s demeanor relaxed slightly. He did, however, pull a small device from his wrist guard and scan the table for eavesdropping and recording devices.

“Tiresome? Oh no, not at all. In fact, I was thinking just this morning that a bloated sack of money-grubbing arrogance was what every good brunch needed.” and he chuckled himself. “Remind me to contact the Daimon. Maybe if his business falters he has a future in the service industry.”

Urg, Lord Duroc

Astrid grinned, laughing a bit more. “Yes. He flatters us all and if you didn’t know any better, you would believe him.”

She shook her head ruefully and sipped the drink that Duroc had had sent to her before they met. It was far better than wine for a brunch and she enjoyed its sweet and tart flavor better. “Well, I am glad that he did not dim your humor. It would have been a shame since our brunch was going so well.”

Rousseau, HotJ

Urg nodded as he sipped his drink. “Indeed. Blood-letting has a way of killing the mood… no pun intended.” and he chuckled and set his glass down. “So, if I may be so bold, tell me about yourself. I appreciate getting to know people I will be dealing with…” and he smiled a smile that was strangely much warmer than his previous ones and added somewhat cryptically “… hopefully regularly.”

Urg, Lord Duroc

She smiled back and sat back in her chair. “Well, the statistics are born on New France. I have siblings; Mattie is at Star Fleet Command and Margie is in Star Fleet as an Engineer currently on Utopia Planetia. I am immeasurably proud of them both. I am a Lawyer turned Head of Justice. Moved here two years ago. I am a bit of a workaholic as so many in leadership can be. I love good food, good drink, and a beautiful sunset. I meditate and do Yoga. I like to swim too. And I have been learning how to defend myself since shortly after my arrival when I was attacked in my own home. I would say I am an excellent shot now.”

Rousseau, HotJ

Urg’s face perked up at the mention of her attack. “You were attacked in your home? They did catch the assailant, correct?” he asked with a hint of anger in his voice.

“Unfortunately no. The Police Commissioner is still up in arms about it.”

“Firing a phaser is one thing, madame. But to truly be safe… you should know how to fight with these.” and he held up his hands and made fists with each. “Only when you are confident that you can best your enemies with no more than a fist can you truly begin to know peace here.” and he set a fist on one of his hearts. “If you wish, I would be happy to teach you some. We cannot have our Chief Justice falling prey to home invaders and muggers, now can we?”

Urg, Lord Duroc

Astrid grinned. She had been learning hand to hand combat for as long as she had been learning how to shoot weapons. It took 8-10 hours out of her schedule every week. Time was precious and that she choose to give so much of it to her own physical wellbeing would be a sign to anyone who knew her how serious she was with her safety. Getting attacked in her home had given her a hard lesson. “Let me assure you Lord Duroc, I am not only learning how to defend myself with a phaser. I have been learning akido and tai chi and have been hitting the mats with kick boxing regularly as well.” She had to wonder how her more defensive styles would mix with a Klingon’s battle hardiness. While kick boxing was the most offensive of her hand to hand combat styles, it was not nearly as aggressive as Klingon styles were.

“I am a supporter of the concept that one should never stop learning. I would be glad to take lessons from you from time to time to ‘up my game’ so to speak.”

Rousseau, HotJ

Urg nodded and said “I am familiar with some of those styles. They will serve you well. But…” and he held up a finger, “… one can never know too much. So when your schedule allows, I will meet with you and teach you some.... less formalized… means of besting an opponent.” He looked over and motioned one of his guards over. In a low voice he said “Contact my brother Joseph and tell him I want to talk to him.” The guard nodded and walked away, stepping inside and out of sight. Urg picked up his glass and said “I will see that you are well prepared. I do not tolerate wanton assaults on those who seek justice.”

Urg, Lord Duroc

She had seen Klingon friends of hers fight just for fun and knew they could sometimes be brutal. When it came down to it, she wondered if she could do the same, if it was within her to be so brutal. Astrid just didn’t know. When it came to her job, she was as forceful as needed. When it came to her personal life, she had always been relatively peaceful. Leaving her home and her father, she had thought there would be no reason for self protection, but her first week on OED V had convinced her otherwise.

“I appreciate your honorable offer and I will take you up on that.” She watched the guard walk away and asked, “Joseph doesn’t sound like a Klingon name. Do you have many siblings?”

Rousseau, HotJ

“Three brothers of Blood” A voice to the side said, a friendly grandfatherly voice known to both as the Head of the Police Force, Commissioner Joseph Karlson. It hadn’t taken the man long to arrive, he had just finished a meeting with one of his Precinct commanders when he got the message, a single public transporter later and he had arrived. Standing behind him was a short man in a dark suit, he seemed to be watching nothing and everything. Joseph was in his usual dark blue three-piece suit and a wooden cane in his left hand. He smiled at both people as he walked past the guards, giving them no mind, his bodyguard stayed back “Astrid, lovely to see you your Honor”

Commissioner Karlson

Urg smiled broadly. “And two brothers by Deed. Joseph being one of them.” he said to the Chief Justice. “Brother, sit with us if you have the time. The Justice and I were just speaking about self-defense.”

Urg, Lord Duroc

Joseph inclined his head and sat with the pair with a slight groan, he rubbed his knee and smiled “Do you wish to add something to her curriculum?” He asked the Klingon “My wife and I have thoroughly enjoyed our sparring sessions with the Chief Justice” He said giving Rousseau an appreciative nod.

Commissioner Karlson
