Mirembe’s eyebrows lifted in a cooly piqued fashion, but she made no effort to act on it. She assumed the story would unravel in due time. “Fire Born..” a good-natured chuckle befell her lips like a soundtrack to the ore stirring tiny pebbles in its wake “..I like it.” Nodding, Mirembe pondered Birdie’s offer. While a drink was hard to pass up, she was far more interested in the mines and their executive. M’Ahar wasn’t here to strike up a casual conversation — she was here to discuss science, development and business. “I’d be a fool to pass up a tour,” she shrugged, “so why don’t we table that drink for another time?” Mirembe grinned and waved her hand in an absent direction, stepping aside for the Fire Born to take lead.

Bree laughed. “A tour it is.” She lead them down one of the passageways. They passed a few miners now and then and eventually turned down a short corridor that bore no other people. There were lights strung and it was obvious that shoring up of the stone had been recently reinforced. “So this mine was thought played out over fifty years ago. It turns out the veins merely were broken by a shift in the ground that placed then out of alignment and deeper in the earth.” This is one of the tunnels where the veins ended. We will actually begin here,” she motioned to the wall at the end of the space, “and level everything across in a single layer. We will then begin to spiral down till we actually reach the bottom of the ore. Then we will spiral up and out. And continue till we mine what we need.”

She leaned on the wall, once more looking like she were merely entertaining company and not discussing the affairs that dictate a colony. “What do you think?” She wasn’t going to give all her ideas at once. But she was certainly going to see what this engineer had in mind in regards to the mine.

Mirembe’s gaze ventured further down the tunnel, her mind lost in reverie before Brianna dragged her back with a question. She turned to the miner, lips pursued in thought, and signed:

“I should offer you a disclaimer of sorts—“ sobriety seeped into her smile “—I have no interest meddling in your business. I understand there’s been tension in the past, and I don’t want that moving forward.” Her calloused fingers danced before her, daring to betray her contemplation. “I’m just here to discuss how our departments can mutually benefit one another.. and maybe make a friend in the process.”

“Spiel aside,” Mirembe snapped toward the mines, “colour me intrigued.”

“I don’t have much to say about the mining process,” it wasn’t her place, nor did she know enough about OED’s mines to offer an opinion, “but I wanted to touch base on environmental conditions. I’m aware my department plays a role in the construction and maintenance of the biodomes.” Mirembe considered the integrity of the rock’s reinforcements, raising her hand to check the airflow above them. She had reservations for the current preliminary and permanent biodomes; but, she didn’t endure them like the miners. So who better to ask than them? “Do you have any concerns for the current biodomes? Or thoughts on how we can help improve mining.. at least in terms of atmospheric conditions?”

– Mirembe M’Ahar, Director of Terraforming

Bree nodded. “I have no desire to bring up old angst or anything, either. I’m not sure what frictions were in the past. But I have no issues with you now. As to how we can help one another, that’s a good question. I am not sure on the exact nature of various domes. Right now we dome the outside of the mines merely to help with circulation of fresh air force fed into the depths so our miners can work without cumbersome environmental suits. Is it going to be possible to build larger domes over a huge open pit, as we are proposing to make, and what kinds of rescources from us or profit margin per location are you in need of to make that happen? If a spot is deep enough and profitable enough, we can actually make sattelite village like locations at the sites to have families and amenities at once they are producing enough, as well.”

The fiery redhead had grandious ideas, for the future. But right now, a dome over the top of a huge pit that would deepen in time was a lot different than a shallow dome that merely forced air thru the myriad of catacombs of most of the mining sites.

“Entirely possible,” Mirembe’s lips curled into a grin. “Domes are a kind of paraterraforming, and they’re a lot like building a giant greenhouse. We need an exoskeleton, paneling, energy and air purification systems.” She glanced at Bree, “atmospheric measures depend on your intended environment.” Mirembe tilted her head. She suspected the miner was looking for a humid environment to reduce particulate-related injuries, but she wanted to make sure. “So, what do you need?”

“Structurally…” She signed, pursing her lips. ”…we could use purified ore for the ribbing to facilitate shape and hold the paneling in place. Bear in mind, the kind of filtration and environmental controls you’ll need will be taxing on any energy source. So, I suggest we use radiation-absorbing paneling to supplement internal power. It’ll take away from the natural heat, but we can compensate elsewhere—“

She cleared her throat, suddenly realizing she’d been spurting nonsense for the past several seconds. “I’m rambling,” she shot Brianna a sheepish grin, “to answer your question.. yes, both a mining dome and satellite village are achievable. I cannot determine margins or resources until I’ve had a chance to map out specifics, but I can get you a statement and a blueprint by the end of this week.”

— Mirembe M’Ahar, Terraforming

Surprisingly, Brianna actually followed most of what Mire had been saying. “No, no. I didn’t think you were rambling at all. It’s those kinds of things I need to know and hear about. I had actually forgotten the structure would have to be far more sufficiently supported since it wouldn’t have any center supports from below as they would on a more shallow dome closer to the ground. So whatever we do, it does need to be more stable the full length of the span and also able to withstand any storms that came up.”

She thought for a moment more and nodded. “End of the week is more than sufficient. I think it would be great to come up with a few different ideas. We do need an atmosphere that would make working without the need for extra warming clothing necessary. And you are right, we also need to consider the kind of atmosphere. Probably some moisture of some kind to keep down the dust. I’m not sure how all that works or how it will affect the dome without central supports. I’m certainly open to all the help and suggestions you can come up with when it comes to designs.”

Bri shook her head and smiled. “Mining I know… the rest I am a little lost on. Oh, would it be better to start with a smaller dome and place larger ones over it, subsequently removing the inner ones, as we go? Or better to work on building the final dome first? Then working under it as planned?” Both made sense to her, so she wasn’t sure which was more plausible.
