The event had been planned well. A few dignitaries were even in attendance. The pomp and circumstance was, however, kept to a minimum at the owner’s request. Some music and a short speech from a tall, slender, hairless man was all that preceded the wood and brass and etched glass windowed doors from opening.

Inside was an actual book store. Tall shelves and multiple tables held bound literary works in a multitude of languages and on a truly astonishing number of topics. A large spiral staircase was set in the far back corners of the main room, and those led to the second floor and the jewel of the establishment… the Rare Book Section… visible from the first floor as it ran the perimeter of the floor below. Here, stasis fields, humidity and temperature controlled cases held antique and rare specimens of works from an array of civilizations. First Editions, banned titles, one-of-a-kind prints graced the cases, drawers, and alcoves all sat for ease of viewing… but not contact. A robust and state-of-the-art security system kept the tomes and treasures safe.

Standing off to the side, the attractive man who spoke outside and then beckoned everyone in stood watching the invitees wander and look on the day before the general public would have access.

The moment she had heard that an actual bookshop would open in the city under the dome, Kaili’s interest had been piqued. So it was not surprising that she was part of the crowd that had gathered for its opening ceremony. After applauding along with everyone else as the doors opened, the slender Xahean stepped inside and ever so slightly to the right. Just enough so that she wouldn’t block the door. Closing her eyes, she inhaled deeply. The smell of books had always been among her favourites. When she opened her eyes again, she let them roam slowly and methodically over everything she could see while a wide, yet gentle smile played across her pale face with its blue markings.

“I am sorry, but I have not met any of your species before. May I ask where you come from?” a soft and gentle voice said from beside her. It was the man… man?… it was hard to determine but ‘man’ seemed likely… who had welcomed everyone. “I hope I am not being rude.” he added. He stood near but not next to her, hands clasped behind his back. He was tall, with brilliant blue eyes.

Turning her head, Kaili blinked with both sets of her eyelids and chuckled softly. “Not at all and you are not the first person to ask me that question. I was raised on a Federation Colony by the name of Nalera. But my people, the Xaheans, come from a planet called Xahea,” she replied easily. Titling her head ever so slightly, she added, “You are Deltan, are you not?”

It was the figure’s turn to tilt their head and they said “I am. The hairstyle usually gives us away. But I just can’t seem to pull off a toupee or a wig.” and they smiled and held out a gloved hand. “Karilan Massat. Welcome to my store, Ms. …? Or is it Mrs.?”
