Cara turned at the sound of a man’s voice and gave the Governor of her new home a good once over. Nice clothes, fit well, good posture, self assured or at least good at appearing so. Well wasn’t he nice tall glass of water on a hot day. And at least 1/2 Betazoid. Well Cara wasn’t one to curb her opinion. There was curtesy of course but tact but when you work with telepathic children you tend to loose your embarrassment quickly over such things. Cara chuckled quietly to herself. She’d been on a ship traveling too long. She grasped his hand firmly and gave it a solid shake. “Governor Hyrushi. The pleasure is mine.” She moved past him into the office and took a chair across from him. “Yes your communiques indicated as such.” She reached into the worn canvas messenger bag and passed over a PaDD, “My credentials, transcripts, tests scores, diplomas, and certifications, as promised.”
Cara, DoE

“Excellent. Thank you.” Hyrushi replied and slid the PaDD out of the way for later review. “I trust your trip here was uneventful? We have had some issue with smaller vessels being harrassed. I hope that was not the case with you.”

Hyrushi, Governor

Karina nodded, not that it would have bothered her had it not been. She’d been hoping her transport would be targeted, it would have allowed her to get more information. See what the syndicate, if those raids were syndicate, was up to. “The trip was uneventful and pleasant. In fact, other than being busy, the process through customs was easy and efficient. What can you tell me of the colonies educational needs, Govenor?” Karina’s voice always sounded thoughtful and purposeful. Being Cairn she often had to stop and consider if she was choosing the correct words for the images in her mind. Even though she had her vocal enhancer since she was very young, she still tried to choose her words with care.

Bump

Kenzo smiled slightly and said “The needs of the colonial education system are vast and daunting. Especially with the goals I have in mind. You see, Ms. Enger… I want you to build us a Federation renowned University. Research, education, development… Oed is about to undergo a massive change. The upgrading of our current Education system is of paramount and long-lasting importance. In ten years, I do not want to have to import experts. I want experts coming here on their own… because they know Oed is the best place to be. Are you the woman for the job?” and he looked at her, reaching out to feel if she grasped the enormity of the task she had before her.

Hyrushi, Governor

Karina sat back after he finished. Was she the the person for the job? 10 years was not a problem as far as a commitment to such a position as she’d taken. What was hidden deep where no one would be able to pick up was the fact she was also there for SFI and whether or not they would leave her here when that was done. But a university? Her eyes lit up at the idea. It was a MASSIVE undertaking, and the realiation of that would show clearly on her face and in her emotions that Hyrushi could pick up. “That is quite the undertaking, Governor. Not impossible, but daunting. 10 years is a rather short time table for such a thing. We will have to start today. I suggest starting by offering technical and trade degrees. There is enough of that going on here on Oed V to provide unique educational opportunities and place those programs at the top of the list. What is your end goal? Trade school, liberal arts, science, Bachelor’s degrees, or beyond? What is the budget like? And while we’re at it, we can’t let the actual school for the children lack, it will be need to be just as on par with the goals for your university, or it speaks very poorly of the whole system.” There was excitement tempered by practicality. “Am I the right person for the job? Certainly. I can’t do it all, but I know how to find the right people for the job. What kind of incentives are you offering to get instructors and staff to come here?”
Enger, ED

Kenzo smiled and leaned back in his chair, black eyes fixed on her.

“Tell me, Ms. Enger… what do you know of Holloway Heavy Industries?” he asked with slight smile.

Hyrushi, Governor

“They are one of the, if not the, biggest defense contractors in the Federation. And I believe my ‘welcome’ packet listed one Lucas Elliot Holloway as a new prominent member of the colony. He is the owner and CEO isn’t he?”
Enger, ED

Kenzo nodded. “He is. And he isn’t just a resident. He happens to be moving the vast majority of Holloway Heavy Industries… right. Here. And as that process will take some time, I have convinced him to allow some of his scientists, engineers, and tradesfolk to teach as their facilities and moved and built. It will fall to you to get them certified and prepared. He and I have also, as part of the various packages we have put in place, agreed that he will build a brand new school. You will lead that project as well.”

Hyrushi, Governor

Karina nodded, “Is the school for the community or this new university or both? Do you have numbers? If they are bringing the whole company that means more kids, more adult students and a whole plethora of potential instructors. Better yet, his contact information. Where is the school going and what is the plan for the old building? What is the staff situation currently? And using his employees is great but they aren’t going to stay forever, eventually they will need to be replaced. A new building is great, but is he filling it too? Books, computers, lab equipment, furniture, etc.”
Enger, ED

Hyrushi just smiled. “All of those questions and more, I am confident, you will have when you and I meet with him. As for the current condition and needs of our school system… well… thats ehy I brought you.”

Hyryshi, Governor

Karina inclined her head in acknowledgement. “Has that meeting been scheduled? Any thing in particular I should be aware of or that is of particular concern? Or is this where you drop me in the deep end and hope I not only can swim but I’m a life guard too?”
Enger, ED

A small laugh and Hyrushi said “Life guard? Oh no… I was hoping for an Olympic-class swimmer. And the needing is in three days. So you have some time to put together a list of needs. How is that for your first swim lesson?”

Hyrushi, Governor

“Olympic?” Karina cast around for the reference, the word having many references, after a moment she landed on the correct one. “Oh yes, you are in luck Governor. I am sure you will find me quite up to the job. I must say this lesson is better than my last swim lesson.” Jodar had dumbed her, coverup and all into the ocean and she had sunk, tangled in the useless thing, into the water, and was stuck under the surface long enough to make Jodar concerned. It had been a fun day. “Well then, where do I pick up keys and codes for the building? Once I get my personal things settled I will want to go straight there.”
Enger, ED

“The receptionist outside has all your credentials. I took the liberty of informing the Education Board that you are coming. I haven’t met them yet… but I’m not impressed. Also, they seem to think you work for them. A misconception I would recommend dealing with sooner rather than later. In that endeavor, please do not hesitate to contact me directly should you need any… official… assistance.” Hyrushi said, almost sounding like he hoped for the call.

Interesting, politics in education. This was something very foreign for Karina. Cairn would never think to use children and their education as a point of a power play. The well being of children always came first, and being a highly telepathic society the children would pick up on it and it affects so much to put them in such a position of being manipulated. She shook her head. Years with SFI though gave Karina the skills to deal with such people. “It won’t be a problem. But I promise if it does, you will be the first, well the second to know.” And there was a twitch of a feral grin that crossed her face. The person making the mistake of trying to strong arm her would be the first to know there was a problem.

“I know this is an abrupt way to start your tenure here, Ms. Enger. But I believe that you will be able to pull this off… swimingly.”

Hyrushi, Governor

She grinned, “You have given my quite a bit to think on, but we shall dive right in and get started. If there is nothing else Governor, I have several additional stops to make before tomorrow morning.”
