The figure looked away and at the store, taking it in as people meandered about. “I… needed a break from my other life.” they said softly. They took a breath and then looked at Kaili. “I was… am?…” and they shook their head and chuckled, “… an Engineer. But I had an opportunity to take a long break… and here I am.”

“Sometimes a break is exactly what we need,” Kaili mused as she studied Karilan closely. After a moment or two of silence, she asked, “Why a bookstore though? There are so many things one could do instead, after all? What intrigued you about this in particular and why Oed V?” Her expression was full of curiosity as she watched them closely.

Karilan shrugged and watched the store. “I had the books. And Oed V is a long way from… well… everything that I wanted to take a break from. So I arraigned a sabbatical, moved my things here, found an apartment with a wonderful view near a small park and a quaint Bajoran restaurant… and here I am.” and they watched a bit longer in silence before turning fully to Kaili. “And what about you? You said you are a doctor, yes? Of what? And what brought you here? Both Oed… and my shop?”

Karilan Massat, Owner

Kaili nodded thoughtfully, but refrained - for now - from asking more follow-up questions. Instead she answered, “Yes, I am. I’m a psychiatrist. As to what brought me here? I came to Oed for two reasons: One there was a vacancy for the position of the Director of Mental Health at the Sacred Heart Hospital that caught my interest. Secondly, I’m looking for information about my birth parents and my search has pointed me towards Oed. As for your store, I always loved books. Holding an actual book in your hands, the smell of books … makes reading more special and enjoyable to me. And you may call me old fashioned, but I prefer to take my notes in an actual notebook with a fountain pen. So I’m always keeping my eyes open for those as well.” She gave a small shrug, but was clearly unashamed of that quirk of hers.

Karilan smiled slightly and said “Well I am glad someone here likes them.” and he looked back at the small crowd in the store. “I am fairly certain most of the individuals here are here because they have never seen a book… let alone a bookstore. But, perhaps, a new interest will be kindled for someone.” and he looked slightly more at ease.

“They don’t know what they’ve been missing,” Kaili winked.

Looking at Kaili, he said “Would you like to see the second floor? I haven’t opened that up for viewing yet, but I would be happy to show you… if you like.”

Karilan Massat, Proprietor

“Oh, I’d love to. From what I can see from down here it seems like you have a very interesting collection up there,” Kaili replied, the smile on her face widened and there seemed to be some genuine excitement about her as she looked up towards the second floor.

Karilan smiled back and said “Excellent. Follow me.” and he led her through the crowd and to one of the roped-off staircases. Leading the way, they came up the stairs to the second floor and Karilan ushered her into the space. “This is some of the rare book collection. I’m in discussion with the Oed Museum to donate some as well. Please… feel free to look. Ask whatever questions you like.”

Karilan Massat, Proprietor

For a long time Kaili stood there in silence as she looked carefully and intently at each book in turn. Taking in every detail of it she could make out while it was standing on a shelf behind a force field. While she took her time with each book, there were some her gaze lingered on even longer because something about it caught her interest in particular. With her eyes still fixed on the books, she eventually asked, “Do you have a favourite in this collection? If so which one and why? Which are thinking about donating and why? What is your favourite book in general?”
