Karilan closed the shop and made sure the security was activated. They turned to Kaili and said “Thank you for helping me close up. That wasn’t necessary, but it was… nice… having someone to talk to.” and then they looked around. “Do you live far? Or would you like to… maybe… um… do… um… something? Like… like you suggested of course. I owuldn’t want to impose.” they stammered qickly.

“It’s been my pleasure,” Kaili replied with a smile. “And you are not imposing at all. I really enjoyed our conversation and would like to continue it. How do you feel about dinner? I would invite you to my place, but I live close to the hospital, so that’s a bit of a walk. Maybe a restaurant would be better? Or we can do something entirely different if you like.” she continued, trying to be as reassuring as possible without being patronising. After all, nobody wanted to be treated like a child.

“Dinner sounds… lovely.” Karilan said with a smile. “Um… there is a nice place just around the corner, if you like human food. And as odd as it sounds, the new Klingon bar has been getting very good reviews. Although that could be slightly more… boisterous… than the other. But I am open to suggestions.” they said hesitantly.

Karilan

“I’ve heard that the Klingon bar is supposed to be really good,” Kaili nodded. “But to be honest, I feel like something a little … quieter. So why don’t you lead the way to the other place?” she suggested.

Karilan nodded and they began to walk down the street. “So tell me about your people, if that is something you feel you can share?” they asked as they moved through the quiet streets. This section of the colony was relatively uncrowded at evening and night times, so they had the streets mostly to themselves.

Karilan

“Of course. I’d be happy to. Though what you should know: I didn’t grew up around any other Xaheans and while my parents did everything they could so I would learn about my people and their culture, it wasn’t till I left home that I eventually got the chance to visit Xahea and meet another Xahean.” Kaili laughed softly and shook her head. “It was a very powerful experience. But yeah, there are number of really interesting things about us. Physically you have probably noticed that I have two sets of eyelids,” she continued and blinked with her inner and then with her outer eyelids. “I can also do this” She made the spikes on her back erect. “And this.” She turned herself invisible for a moment, always watching Karilan closely. As she reappeared, she looked at them with a raised eyebrow, but didn’t say anything.

Karilan’s eyes went wide and then they smiled. “That is simply amazing! Now is that true biononluminosity? Or is it more akin to camoflauge? And what is the purpose of the dorsal appendages? And if your…” and Karilan flushed slightly and looked away. “I… I … I’m sorry. I am not meaning to bombard you with questions. Until Oed, I had not had a chance to meet many of the lesser-represented species in the Federation, so it is… exciting.”

Karilan

“Please, ask as many questions as you like. I’d be happy to answer all of them. Okay?” Kaili replied as she tried to catch Karilan’s eyes. “It’s more akin to camouflage and both are defensive mechanisms. Remnants of a time when couldn’t defend ourselves against predators with weapons.” Turning invisible again, she said. “When I stand still you have to look really closely and pretty much know where I am to see me. But as soon as I move I become a little easier to spot.” At that she started to walk back and forth in front of them and they’d be able to make a slight distortion.

Karilan nodded appreciatively and then said “That is most impressive. I am surprised more of your people are not in Staf Fleet. I know a few Security Chiefs who would have given bodily appendages in exchange for someone with that ability.” and they laughed softly. “So does the ability hold any significance or use in your modern society?”
