Delta Quadrant - Mo' Communications, Mo' Problems

Posted June 22, 2021, 12:46 p.m. by Civilian Ragna Idun McKenzie (Future Citizen) (Jennifer Ward)

In the shuttle Cuyler keyed up the com unit making the connection to the Manhattan and Revna. Revna appeared on the screen after a few moments, took in the look on her Da’s face and the tears on her mother’s face. “What’s happened?” And the story was told quickly with as much detail as they could give. “Seamus said to tell Mike ‘t’s time we did what we swore to do that summer.’ And I have a letter for you from Tara McKenzie.” Cuyler scanned it with the computer and then the file was transferred to Revna. She opened the file and read it.
The Edmans

The letter was in a formal hand, but as the words were laid out, the hand could be seen to become more shaky. It read:

To: Mrs. Revna Freya McKenzie From: Lady Tara McKenzie, Clan McKenzie

Dear Revna,

I do so hope that you don’t mind the familiarity. Under such circumstances, titles are cumbersome and besides… I am happy to welcome you to the family, let alone the Clan.

I am sorry that our first exchange must be one of urgent request… and a request that I am in no position to burden you with. For that, know that I am truly and eternally sorry. I am asking you… begging you… that you help us convince Michael to come back and accept his role. This is not a burden I would wish on either of you; but the actions of his cousins have made any further moves or goals on his behalf moot. They have stepped across a line I did not see… or perhaps I only foolishly willed myself to be blind to. They have jeopardized the future of the clan with their actions… actions I am certain you have been made aware of by this point. Your sister will recover, that I promise. But the damage is far greater than hers. The actions of that camp have cut a mortal wound into our clan… and Michael is the only salve that will mend it and make it whole. We need him, Revna. We haven’t needed him before… we wanted him with us. As selfish as that was, we also didn’t push him to fulfill our desire. Now, however… now we need him. We need you both here, with us… immediately. Time slips from us as does our Clan. Soon, we will have nothing left. Reconciliation is at hand, Revna… Michael is the only one who can save us from the end.

I am truly sorry to ask this of you. And know that if there was any other way… I would leave you both be as has been his wish. I can only hope my words spur change in his heart. This is no longer about his birthright… it is about his chance to save us all.

Tara

Revna read the letter quietly, and then read it again. “Da, set the shuttle coms to go to your comms.” Cuyler looked at her, he had no idea what she was talking about. “Okay middle panel of the co-pilot’s console. Second key on the 2nd to left column. Tap it, now the top right button, from the list find the ID number for your personal comm.” Cuyler looked at the list, it was all serial numbers. “Really, Da come on!” Revna sighed good naturedly. “CZX-854219.”

Cuyler tapped the number and grinned. “See this is why I need you around. I can’t make heads or tails of this stuff.” Helka exchanged a long suffering look with her eldest daughter. They both knew it was all for her benefit.

“I need to talk to Mike. I’ll call you back…today. How long?”

Cuyler sighed, “A month, no longer.” Revna nodded. She’d have to call in a lot of favors for that. Thankfully Manhattan was already a day out from Event Horizon. So much for surprising Mike. Revna cut off the comm to her father, “Computer Connect to Event Horizon star base, communication for resident Michael McKenzie, urgent.” Revna cried softly while she waited for the comm to go through. For Ragna and what had happened to her and Seamus, for Tara, for the McKenzie clan, and for what Mike was being forced to do. While she waited for Mike to answer she started looking for transports that would get her to Earth in a month, and they had to get Runa too. Well maybe Runa could get her own transport out. She’d call her next.
