Karilan kissed her back, hesitantly, but finally relaxed just enough to enjoy the moment; even leaning into her slightly so more of their bodies touched. Finally pulling back, they smiled and said “I… I liked that very much. Thank you.”

“I’m glad. I did as well,” Kaili smiled happily.

A cleared throat indicated the approaching waiter. “Have you had a chance to decide, yet?” they asked. Karilan flushed bright red, but picked up the menu and said “Um… ahem… yes. If I may please have the pasta primavera and the soup of the day, please.” They looked at Kaili and said “I’ve had it before, it is quite good.”

Karilan

Her expression slightly sheepish, Kaili looked up at the waiter and then leaned closer to Karilan to peer into the menu as well, their bodies touching ever so slightly. Picking the first item she laid eyes one, she said, “I’d like to have the mushroom ravioli and also a soup of the day.” Looking at Karilan, she added, “And maybe a small bottle of your semi-dry Rosé?”

Karilan nodded and the waiter smiled and left. Karilan looked at Kaili and said “So… why… all of this? I mean… I am just confused as to how… I mean… how we ended up here. Not that I am complaining, far from it.” and they shook their head and smiled. “Ohhhh… I am going to make a mess of this yet, aren’t I?”

Karilan

“You are not going to make a mess of this,” Kaili replied gently, yet with conviction. “As to why? I don’t know. Fate maybe? A lucky coincidence? I honestly don’t know. All I know is that I felt drawn to you from the moment we started talking. Not in a sexual, hormone driven way. Not that that doesn’t play into it as well, but it was, and still is, like … I want to get to know you better and at the same time feel like we have already known each other for a long time. I don’t really understand how both can be true at the same time, but it’s how I feel.” She gave a small shrug while her body still lightly touched Karilan’s.

Karilan moved closer to her. “I have never been… comfortable… with people. I mean… I have friends… good friends… but people in general. Especially with physical contact. But here… with you… I don’t feel that way. I mean, I do… but it is like the tide is going out. The waves of it are smaller and smaller… and come further apart. Its… odd. But it’s good.” They set a hand on Kaili’s leg and looked at her intently. “Is that ok with you?”

Karilan

“It is,” Kaili replied softly, her eyes locked with Karilan’s. Smiling warmly, she placed her hand on top of their’s. After a few moments of silence, she asked, “Do you have sibling? Pets? How did you grow up?” There were more things she wanted to ask, but she didn’t want to bombard Karilan with her questions and potentially overwhelm them. So for now she left it at that.

Karilan shook their head without taking their eyes from Kaili and said “No, no siblings. My parents died when I wasn’t even a year old. We were traveling on a ferry, Delta IV is almost entirely water, and it crashed and sank. I was one of three survivors. My aunt, the one who left me the antiques and books, was the one who raised me. She passed a few months ago. No pets, but I’ve been thinking about getting one. I grew up traveling with my aunt. She took me all over with her on her buying trips. Private tutors and such since we were always gone. So I was able to see much of the galaxy even before I joined Star Fleet. What about you… Kaili?” They said her name with emphasis… as if drawing some kind of pleasure from uttering it.

Karilan

Hearing Karilan say her name made the butterflies in her stomach flutter a bit more and the smile on her face grew a little wider. “I’m sorry that you lost your parents too,” Kaili replied softly, but without pity. “I don’t know who my birth father is. Other than that he was clearly Xahean like my birth mother. She died giving birth to me and long story short, I got adopted by the best mums I could have asked for. T’Sani is Vulcan and Asihi is Bajoran. I have three siblings, all adopted. Vastrin is three years older than me and half human, half Vulcan. And the twins are Bajoran and four years younger. Ninasi has always been an animal lover and always brought home every single injured or sick animal she found and nursed them back to health. So we always had half a zoo. To nobody’s surprise she is a veterinarian and runs an animal clinic.” Kaili laughed softly as she thought of her baby sister and all those animals she had brought home over the years.
