“And where are they all now? And how often do you get to see them?” Karilan asked. At that moment the waiter appeared with the wine and two glasses. He smiled at the change in seating arraignment and opened the bottle and poured the wine after letting Karilan taste. As he left he said “Your soup is on it’s way now.” A moment later another server arrived and set down two bowls of French Onion soup covered in a thick layer of melted cheese. Karilan smelled the soup and then looked at Kaili and smiled. “This is actually one of my favorite dishes. I’m excited.” Their hand stayed on Kaili’s thigh and squeezed lightly as they spoke.

“Our mums are still on Nalera, the colony where we all grew up. And so is Ninasi. Vastrin is the Chief Science Officer on the USS Levi-Montalcini and Nosem is a Vedek and on Bajor. It’s very rare that we are all home at the same time. Though we try to make it happen at least once a year. I generally go to Nalera at least twice every year. More often when I happen to be close enough,” Kaili replied and then gave Karilan a soft kiss on the cheek before asking, “How about you? Do you return to Delta IV often?” Reaching for her spoon with the hand that wasn’t still resting on top of Karilan’s she added, “And this does smell amazing!”

Karilan blushed slightly at the kiss but smiled. “How far away is Nalera? Is Oed closer than you have been? What is a Vedek? And yes… it does smell amazing.” They picked up their spoon and then looked to be in thought for a moment before saying “Until my aunt’s passing, I don’t think I had been on Delta for… twelve years? Ten? I don’t really remember. But is was nice to go back, adn the service for her was very good. She had many, many friends. And it was good they could all say goodbye together.”

“I’m glad you were all able to say goodbye. That is so important,” Kaili nodded before answering Karilan’s questions. “The closest inhabited planet is Vega. So OED is more or less the furthest I’ve been so far. For a long stretch of time any way. And a Vedeks are religious leaders on Bajor. Like priests,” she replied with a smile.

They took a bite of the soup and smiled. Looking at Kaili, Karilan smiled and said “This is delicious, but no where near as good as kissing you.” and they blushed quite a bit but didn’t look away.

Blushing as well, Kaili ate a small spoonful of her soup before leaning even closer to Karilan as she whispered, “You are right.” Just as tenderly as before, though with no hesitation this time, she kissed them again.

~Kaili

Karilan let her kiss them, returning the kiss with less hesitation… and perhaps just a touch of eagerness. For a moment they held the kiss before pulling back slightly and looking at her. Smiling, the question that came from their lips wasn’t accusatory or scared, just… curious. “Kaili…” they said in the same fashion as before, “… why me?”
