Jordar was pacing the hall of his flat, nothing special to most but it was who lived there that was fantastic. Rondara was with him, his half Zaldan half Orion daughter that was the light of his world, the star of his night, and who he hadn’t seen for the past 5 years. That photo was still on his desk, the two of them with her beaming at him, the ‘merc’ as he was known just a softie with his little girl. She called down the hall “Dad it’s time to go!” and he snapped out if it, “Of course, I hear you’re giving Ms. Karina lots of trouble?” His daughter nodded as he smiled, “Good, she deserves it”.

As the bright 7 year old beamed he scooped her up and spun her around before saying, “Alright, socks, shoes, and out the door.” He went to grab a cup of coffee while his daughter finished getting ready and met her outside in the bright sun. They walked hand in hand towards the school building where he ducked his head inside and winked to Karina, “I’ll see you later?” Before he saw Rondara off playing with her friends.

Jordar

Karina waved at Rondara, just like she did the other children, as she ran past eager to go play with the other children. Rondara was a bright child, smart, and had made great leaps in her education gap while on Delotha, and that had shown no signs of changing here. Karina adored her and it was hard to keep her distance until things settled. Rondara gave her no end of trouble, but at the same time Karina was delighted to see her grow.

She flashed Jodar a quick smile and nodded. “I’ll bring her home.” Jodar was supposed to call and say he had to stay at work and Karina would take her home. It would allow them to have reason to talk. They had no idea if they were being watched so it was better to be cautious. Karina stood in the doorway watching the children until the bell rang.

Jordar let off a smile and nodded as he turned to leave, “Thank you…Oh and check Rondara’s bag, I’m not sure if her homework made it in. Let me know if there’s any issue?” He said before heading out to the door. This too was a ploy that Jordar and Karina explored, the idea of being watched was very real and on a colony where you had plenty of in and out, there was always danger. In the backpack would be found a PaDD with indeed Rondara’s homework, but also a couple of encrypted files that looked like system routines. Extracting them and decoding them would reveal that Jordar not only hadn’t found any activity of the syndicate in the system, but also a rather funny if not blunt request for dinner and chat this evening. All Karina would have to do was say that ‘Rondara did have her homework in’ and it was a date, or ‘She didn’t get it in the bag’ and she wouldn’t be joining him.

Karina picked up Rondara’s bag and unzipped it and pulled out the PaDD flipping through it. “Ah yes she did remember the correct PaDD and she has her homework in.” Karina had to hold back a laugh at the invitation. She had found over the last several weeks, after she left Jodar and Rondara on Delotha that she really missed him. Both of them actually. Rondara was full of life and playfulness, mixed in with a seriousness that made Karina ache for her. And Jodar was a jerk, well not really. He was if you didn’t understand the Zaldan mentality, but Karina found him refreshing and honest and it complimented her own blunt honesty and lack of privacy. Jodar’s bluntness and hard truth seemed to bring Rondara out of her shell. If she did well he told her, if she made mistakes he told her and how to fix it, and she thrived on that. She was truly excited to get to spend the evening with them later. But it all had to be planned carefully. Luckily Jodar and Karina both had extensive experience in working and living under such restrictions.

The day progressed easily enough for the morning. The school was currently understaffed and Karina was hands on. She taught one of the elementary classes in the morning and then in the afternoons she either helped fill in where needed or worked on the administrative aspect of the school. She’d found a location she wanted for the new school and for the university the governor wanted. She also been doing some research and had started recruiting some of the best professors in their fields to start correspondence courses, or to come to Oed V and start with the associate level basic degree requirements or the trade degrees that would be offered. She was in the process of making an appointment with the hospital to talk to them about the idea of making a teaching hospital at Sacred Heart as part of the university. Hit the ground running she thought was the human idiom. The school board was pushing for her to meet with them on their time and she put them off. On purpose. She’d schedule a meeting, but not till she was ready. There were some inconsistencies that her years as an agent made her look at the whole thing with a side-eye.

Half way through the afternoon classes she got the expected message from Jodar explaining he would be late to pick up Rondara and could she stay at the school late. A few necessary back and fourths and Karina had agreed to walk her home. At the end of the day Karina stepped back into the classroom where Rondara was working. She had a gift for languages and was teaching one of the smaller children their colors in Ferengi. She walked over to her and waited for her to finish. “Rondara, your father called, he’s going to be late at work and asked me to walk you home.” This was of course a scenario that Jodar had discussed with Rondara. She understood that she couldn’t tell anyone they already knew each other. “Oh....okay. How late is he going to be?” Karina smiled, “He asked me to tell you he’d be home before dinner and to finish your homework.” And with a smile, dropping her voice a little, “But I think he may have said that because he was talking to me.” Of course he wasn’t, they both knew that, but Karina wasn’t supposed to be that familiar with Jodar’s personality. They left just a bit later, Karina deflecting conversations from ‘board’ members. “It looks like we actually live in the same building, Rondara. So not too far of a walk then.”
