Having spent a lot of money on her EV suit, it fit closely to her body and the helmet was entirely clear, so it was fairly easy to maneuver in it. “I was actually close when the bulletin went out about the crash so I thought I’d stop and learn what I could before I see the Governor. You mentioned a survivor? Are they conscious? Do you think they could answer some questions?”

—Nyx

Nicholas had spied the crash and checked out a SF EV suit. He took his time approaching and came up not long after Nyx. Surveying the crash from this distance he didn’t address anyone or really care they were present. A ship dropping out of the sky merited his attention more than the crowd.

-Lt Cmdr Nicholas James

Issac went back inside the store and in the storage room, he took the EV suit he got from Bree for going into the mines and headed back out to go to the crash site. “That guy made an interesting point.” he mused to himself as he walked toward the crash.

“Dunno.” Chip stated, his eyes looked up from the gradual updates.

His blue eyes noted the fire unit start to pry open the hull and enter the ship, their extinguishers gradually smothered the fires. Most of the remains were charred and destined to be recycled without examination.

“A man was found sitting outside the ship,” he points to Cory Wilder, being attended to by the medical staff.

“He appears to be in shock and isn’t replying to the questions being asked. While we figure out what to do with him, we’re going to have to try to find out what we can from the ship.” Immediately he noted Nicholas James, having missed the man at first in the chaos, then lowered his voice.

“So, how are you going to deal with Starfleet? They might want to lead the investigation.” He was not a fan of the idea, naturally.

-NPC, Chip (Janice B.)

Nyx noted the arrival of James, but she wasn’t really familiar with him. Keeping her voice low on the channel she and Chip were communicating on, she gave the impression of a conspiratorial link between them. “This is one of those gray areas. It isn’t a Star Fleet ship, so exactly who gets to call the shots on this investigation is still unknown. However, I work for the Governor and he’s in charge of OED, so I’m going to head over to the ship and see if I can get on board when they get her open.”

“Would you mind doing me a favor? I would really appreciate it if you could keep your eyes open and take a couple of notes about what goes on while I’m gone. If anyone tells you to leave the site, mention Hiryoshi’s name and say you are reporting directly to him. That should make them think twice about trying to get you out of the way. Oh, and I would certainly compensate you handsomely for your time.”

—Nyx

Chips nodded in understanding, enjoying the idea of additional payment. At this point, his current career didn’t add many perks for the headache it caused him. He watched her a moment before he added.

“I can do that, but take one of the communicators on the table. We stopped giving the frequencies when some crew member decided to share it with unauthorized individuals.” Just as he finished up his sentence, his communicator went off.

Sinayda helped herself to one of the devices and ten continued on toward the ship.

=^= Chip, we have a few volunteers heading up to assist with the ship.=^=

“With who’s permission?” Chip snapped. His body leaned on the table as he absorbed the incoming conversation and silently fumed in place.

=^= Someone over yours and my head, I didn’t ask too many questions. I just gave you a heads up. =^=

The old man sighed then waved the frustration away before he addressed his coworker. “All right, I’ll deal with them when they arrive. Thanks, Jerry.”

=^= No problem, over and out.=^=

“Just my luck, more trouble to untangle.” He turned to Nyx when she started to move toward the ship, “Be careful and if you notice any malfunctions on the ship, use the communicator then get out. I rather not have any injuries if we can avoid it.”

-NPC, Chip (Janice B.)

When Nyx got to the ship, she’d approached it like someone used to being in charge and made to move past the man stationed by the opening.

—Nyx

When Nyx approached the opening, the man shifted then paused when he caught Chip’s glare. Thinking better of his actions, he retreated back to his former position. >

Issac saw the group of volunteers and decided to blend in with them as they spoke to the guard about helping out, thinking that would be his best route to get close to the ship.

Chip navigated the uneven terrain as he strolled over. His EVO suit had become smeared by the grimy ash smudges as the little flakes rained down on the volunteers, gradually hindering their vision through the protective visors.

“All right, Anderson and Graves will be leading the teams. Most of you will wait out here, switching out on shifts. You, you, and you.” He pointed to a young woman, an older man, and Ducante.

“You three are with Graves. If you find a survivor, notify the others. I must stress this: unless it’s an immediate life or death situation, don’t try to save them yourself.” Chip then assigned another three people with Anderson.

“Stay within eyesight of your group. Take a communicator and basic scanner with you during your search. Watch your step and take it slow. If you feel unusual in any way that isn’t normal, tell your supervisor.”

Graves immediately looked to his team, waiting on them to wrap up. Already the man had grabbed a communicator and scanner for himself then stood along with Graves. The woman, however, was a bit more timid and unsure about her actions. To anyone paying attention, she appeared lost at what to did despite Chip’s specific instruction.

-Janice B.

Issac took a scanner and communicator and stood by Graves and the other two ready to begin the search, for survivors, amongst other things. He decided to stay close to the woman, as she seemed confused on what she was even doing there, and he felt he could use that to his advantage.

By this time, Graves signaled for his group to follow him. The woman kept behind as she examined her scanner, distracting herself. The leader disappeared into the ruptured opening within the ship and paused. He reached out a hand to help each person inside before entering last.

The fires had mostly died with the resilient ones still roaring in the background. Soot and ashes collected in trails where they had roamed. Despite the outside there appeared to be little damage. Surrounding the group was numerous crates in various states. Some had toppled over across the floor, others had been bashed open, and some just remained intact.

“All right, we’ll pair off to cover more ground. Keep track of where you came from so you can find your way back. I’m starting with the next room.” Graves already started to head down a nearby corridor with the other man behind him.

The woman gave Issac and Nyx a nervous glance. “Uh, hello. My name is Mary. Nice to meet you and I guess we’re search partners. Where do you think we should start?” Her eyes glanced about to the mess around them.

-Janice B.

There was something about the woman that set alarm bells off for Nyx. She hadn’t formed an opinion about Ducante yet. “Well, let’s get there in and see what calls to us. The decision might make itself known before we decide on anything.” She moved past the other two and into the ship, hooking the communicator to the waistband of her EVA suit. Since the power was out for the most part, she flipped on the lights of her suit and moved forward.

—Nyx

Nyx’s light distorted the shadows across the cargo bay’s far wall as she moved forward. A few steps in, glass crunched and crackled underneath her foot. If she shifted her light’s focus down, she would find a viscous fluid stuck to her shoe’s bottom. From where she stepped, a small trail glistened and trailed toward the cargo bay’s back.

Meanwhile, the woman nodded and stepped to the side. She watched Nyx move through as she hesitated. “Of course.”

Her eyes looked to Ducante, uncertain if he was going to follow the other woman or simply stay in the cargo bay.

-Janice B.

Nyx kept walking, following the glistening trail, but she wasn’t just blustering along. Every step was taken carefully with a good look around at the surroundings. Something had obviously come this way and she didn’t want to be surprised by it.

OOC: Do we have coms with each other? With people outside the ship? With others inside the ship but in a different group?

—Nyx

The trail wound into erratic S-shape trails deeper and deeper inside. A few containers were burst open and scattered among the dying fires, the contents ruined. On closer inspection, it appeared some of the containers were crushed by something large. Black lines from phrase fire scratched along the untouched walls in the background. Debris began to surround Nyx, transforming the walkway into an ever-narrowing passage. Against the far wall, her destination, the thickest collection laid before her.

“Are you all seeing the same thing I am? …a slimy trail? I don’t know what might have made it, but it looks like it goes back there.” She pointed ahead. “We’ll have to go single file now, the trail narrows more and more ahead of us.

—Nyx (do any of us have a weapon?)

OOC: All right folks, I left the exact conditions of the path to the back vague in order to allow writer creativity. So don’t be scared to use it, but beware of the consequences and risks. :P

As for Grisham’s question.

Due to budget and quantity reasons, the comms you picked up are short-range and considered cheap. So you have strong communication to the group inside the ship, but outside will result in static and cutting out issues. This is why Chip wanted people to go in groups and why your group leader wanted people to stay within range of each other.

Nope, you don’t have weapons. As far as I can tell, no one smuggled one in or mentioned having one. As far as Chip or anyone else on duty is aware, this is an accidental crash caused by a malfunction or possibly a human error. This why volunteers were allowed to search the wreck. I’m going to give about 2-3 days for any of our other members to reply and react before moving forward.

-Janice B.

Issac took the rear of the group, letting Nyx take the lead, and he followed behind the woman. He would keep up with them walking at the start of the trail, he was uncertain why the trail was slimy, and also a little upset all the containers of cargo were pretty much destroyed and unsalvageable.

Mary peered around Nyx’s figure. When her eyes found the slimy trail, she frowned in confusion and thoughtfully considered the origins. Nothing came to the surface as she took a breath to ease her building anxiety. When Nyx started to move, her attention whipped to the other woman and swiftly followed her lead. Thankfully, she was small enough to slip through the narrowest of the ‘tunnel’ comfortably.

When Nyx got to the front, several containers crossed across the exit to block it. The slim trail ran through a gap nearest the bottom. When examined, she found it was too small for any human to squeeze through. It also appeared one of the container’s lids was loose and could be released with a little muscle.

-Janice B.

Sinayda reached the area where the trail effectively stopped for anyone human. She held her fist up in the air in the universal sign to halt. “It doesn’t look like we can go any further unless we try and move some of this rubble. The slime runs beneath it to the other side but none of us are small enough to squeeze through the tiny opening at the bottom.” She squatted down to get a closer look and spotted the loose lid on a container. “Do we have any idea what this ship was carrying? Has anyone accessed its manifest yet?”

—Nyx

Issac started trying to help them move the rubble. He pulled to find any other pieces that were easy to move so they could clear the path and continue following the slime trail.

At the woman’s question, Mary paused and considered an answer.

“I-I don’t recall receiving any information about the cargo. I would assume they wouldn’t send us in if it was something dangerous… would they?” She considered the possibility for a moment.

Before she could ask another question, Issac stirred. Her peripheral vision caught sight of him pushing past her to help remove the containers. Instinctively she pressed herself to the side, giving him just enough room to squeeze by.

Things began to shift and creak as his hands shifted the objects around. Some of the containers appeared intact and salvageable. The one with the loose lid jiggled open a crack before something heavy thumped down from the top, landing among contents inside.

“Did you hear that too?” Mary asked, unsure what caused that loud sound.
