Surprisingly, Brianna actually followed most of what Mire had been saying. “No, no. I didn’t think you were rambling at all. It’s those kinds of things I need to know and hear about. I had actually forgotten the structure would have to be far more sufficiently supported since it wouldn’t have any center supports from below as they would on a more shallow dome closer to the ground. So whatever we do, it does need to be more stable the full length of the span and also able to withstand any storms that came up.”

She thought for a moment more and nodded. “End of the week is more than sufficient. I think it would be great to come up with a few different ideas. We do need an atmosphere that would make working without the need for extra warming clothing necessary. And you are right, we also need to consider the kind of atmosphere. Probably some moisture of some kind to keep down the dust. I’m not sure how all that works or how it will affect the dome without central supports. I’m certainly open to all the help and suggestions you can come up with when it comes to designs.”

“That’s a good point,” Mirembe agreed and mulled over it a second. “We’ll manage the environment through two systems, filtration and cycle control, housed in an atmospheric complex similar to Oed’s. We’ll regulate humidification via the water cycle, which shouldn’t infringe on the dome’s integrity nor structure… though it might create mud the first time around.” She shook her head, smiling.

“Climate-wise…” another second elapsed, “30-35% humidity is sufficient to maintain dust levels. We can couple it with a temperature range of 13-18 degrees Celcius. That’ll allow your people to work thermal-free, without risking heat sickness and the likes. What do you think?”

Bri shook her head and smiled. “Mining I know… the rest I am a little lost on. Oh, would it be better to start with a smaller dome and place larger ones over it, subsequently removing the inner ones, as we go? Or better to work on building the final dome first? Then working under it as planned?” Both made sense to her, so she wasn’t sure which was more plausible.

“I suggest we consult Building and Construction, once we have a general design. They might give us a few pointers on structural integrity and the construction process.” Mirembe smiled. “But, I’ve seen it done both ways. Typically, multiple domes are used for larger structures that could collapse in the building process. Oed-size domes, if you would. It’s less cost and resource-effective than a single dome, but it provides a safety net. But, considering the size of this dome, I don’t think we’ll need multiple domes.

— Mirembe M’Ahar, Terraforming

“Perfect!” Bri smiled. “When you have time, perhaps we can sit down together with B&C and discuss it. We will need to figure out fabrication costs and times. If plausible, I’d like the mines to support themselves in this. I know I have budgets for these things, but making them self sustaining and profitable is the goal. Isn’t it? Make money without being a drain.”

Self-sustaining. Profitable. Mirembe digested those word, then bobbed her head in assent. “Sustainable with minimal expenditure — that’s hardly an unreasonable request. Let’s see what we can do.”

She considered the other comments and nodded. “Temperature and humidity levels at that stage sound great. As to the mud, if we can set that ahead of time, perhaps the softened outer crust with be an advantage. More scooping and less drilling. At least, that’s the theory. Other option is collapse and scoop out.” She smiled at the idea of the current cave system merely collapsing from the moisture and a large sink hole appearing in the middle of the location. It was amusing but certainly not ideal.

A sputter of wry laughter tore from her throat, but she quelled it. “The atmosphere will be our primary concern after dome construction. It’ll go through a trial phase to define ideal settings. That should be long enough to control the mud…” she stewed on it a moment ”…but we’ll have cleanup to contend with. Nothing out teams can’t handle, eh?”

She glanced around and absently picked at the wall behind her till a small stone disengaged. Rolling it absently in her hands she looked back at her companion and smiled. “I think that’s all I can think of at the moment. We need to talk to Building and see what we’re looking at with timelines between us all. I’d like to schedule that soon as is convenient for you. Just name when. And let me know if you need excavations at other sites not being mined. We have the folks right now while we get these mines up and running. Then everyone will be taken.” It dawned on the Fire Born that a hiring boon was in order as well. To get the mines going at the speed the Director wanted, they would need more bodies. Not that OED didn’t have them. She just had to get them out there in the field. Too many had been out of work for too long. She had thought to open them slowly to keep the base from being strained. But given permission to run faster… she was gonna sprint!

“I’ll make some calls and see when we can squeeze in a meeting with B&C.” Mirembe blinked, redirecting her attention to Brianna. “We’ll keep you in the loop on excavations. Given the state of terraforming, we may need help finding preliminary sites. Who better to ask than the people who know Oed’s surface best?” She recalled the display Hyrushi had shown her, trusting there were more than a few options to pick through. When Brianna mentioned reinvigorating the mines, a lightbulb seemed to spark. “That brings me to the other reason I came to see you.”

“I understand that you have work to get to, so we can table this conversation for later. But, it appears both the Mining and Terraforming initiatives are in need of extra bodies, specifically in manual labour.” She summed, “how amenable would you be to discussing a joint training program for prospective hires?”

— Mirembe M’Ahar, Director of Terraforming

Bri smiled. “Joint training. That makes sense. After all, they are basically the same thing, just different end goals. And in the case of a crisis, having able bodies in the know would be a heck of an asset on either side. And I don’t think we need to table it for that long from now. How do you feel about dinner tomorrow night? We can discuss the pool of candidates we already have as well as how we are going to broaden that pool. I can also bring a list and map of locations where terraforming might be complimentary to sites that need mining as well. Having a dome of both work and growth long term would be ideal. Would help to build locations where commuting in and out of the domes is minimal in regards to moving labor forces, don’t you think? Makes more sense to work and live in one place than back ‘n’ forth like we do now from the main complex to the mining sites we have.” The redhead gestured to the current location they were in. Having this attached to a terraformed location where there was also agro and other things happening would make things safer as well. Less in and out. Only the shipments would need to depart regularly, not the people. What do you think?” It had just come to her that moment and she was already bracing for the woman across from her to take her to task for such a ridiculous idea. After all, on Earth, mining towns turning into major cities around mines was one thing… but here? Was she that far off in wishing something like that? Or was it too grandious as idea for domed living environments. Here was where she needed to start doing more learning.

(and obviously no terraforming expert) lol

Mirembe shot IAN a spirited grin and beckoned it closer. “Perfect!” She thought to suggest a place, but another idea caught her interest. “Do you like steak?”

Brianna laughed a moment and nodded. “Of course. If there is a nice ale to go with it. Or even some Klingon spirits. I admit that I’ve been given some and it’s become a habit.” She laughed remembering the keg that was now at her disposal and the promises of more when it ran out.

A moment of thought took root in her downturned lips and idle pout, granting her a deceivingly cynical cast. Brianna’s idea animated her, but there was more to consider than its grandeur. OED’s land and resources were finite, so they would have to be frugal albeit precise in their expenditures. But Mirembe sincerely doubted a handful of domes would be detrimental to the economy. Then again… she was a terraformer, not a businesswoman. That was a trait she’d yet to acquire.

“Training, transportation, partnership— I love it! My only concern is taking on too much, too soon. We could plan it all out, but I’d recommend starting with the initial dome.” She clicked her tongue in thought. “Then, we can initiate a beta training program and pull in some of those candidates. When we have a better picture of what we’re dealing with, we expand or modify. That’ll keep us from jumping ahead of ourselves.. because we still have a boss to run this by.” Mirembe jabbed her head in the Government Tower’s general direction. “How does that sound?”

— Mirembe M’Ahar, Director of Terraforming

“And you are right,” Bri continued. “Plans are one thing, execution is entirely another. I think we focus on the dome for here. Then training and getting the other mines running full tilt. We will need resources either way. And then we can go to the Governor with plans for expansion once we have the logistics, costs, et cetera, all mapped out. I want to try and anticipate all the things he’s gonna want to ask and have our rocks in a row before we approach him. And then, I want to be able to say Look… we are already at this point. This is the next logical step for growth potential.” Her mind was already working on a million points she knew he would ask about. And not one of them currently had an answer. She needed to show him 80-90% of the mines up and fully running before circling round and growing them into more. Focusing on the one, like Mire had said, was pointless. Better to lay large foundation then build up.

“So how about dinner and discussions in a place more comfy than my digs.” She nodded to the mine around her. “And I’ll work on proposal to get the others on board with as well.”
